Fits my standard axe head just right. Any bigger and the strap wouldn't fit because I am on the last hole. See pictures with ruler to get an idea of the size it fits.

The axe head sheath that came with the Snow & Nealley felling axe that I bought in 1975 finally got too funky to repair. This sheath is thick top grain cowhide, triple-thick at the edge to protect both the cutting edge and the stitching, and forms to the axe you’re going to use it with if you’ll drown the leather in Lexol, and then spend 5 minutes folding it in every direction. I hope that my grandkids will use this axe and say to themselves, “Wow! It used to be the case that you could buy a finely made axe without having to get it from Sweden or Germany."

I bought this axe guard because I have a nice old Plumb Michigan pattern boy's axe that I want to take camping with me. It was a garage sale find that I rehung and sharpened and, though the blade is a bit worn down, it gets plenty sharp and splits campfire wood really well.Until now it's hung on a wall in my garage and only come out when I split a few small logs for the fire pit. I'll be going camping soon and thought that this would be a perfect camp axe-- light enough to carry, big enough to split wood and cut smaller logs. This puts it somewhere between a full-size felling axe and a hatchet.Because this axe was a garage sale rescue, I never had a sheath or guard for it. I wanted something made of leather and fairly universal in size because I have a couple of other nice full-size axes and I never know which one I might want to take with me to camp.I took some measurements and ordered this blade guard, which looks like it will fit a wide variety of small and medium single-bit axes. Here are my thoughts:-The fit is fine on the blade. It slips onto the boys' axe with room to spare, but not so much room that it flops around too much. I haven't tried it on a full size axe but it looks like it will fit a couple of the larger Dayton-pattern axes I have.-I like that it's made of leather. Leather is tough and can last a long time if cared for properly. I treated it to a good coat of neatsfoot oil to condition it and waterproof it a bit.-The fit and finish is... OK. Nothing to write home about but certainly not bad at this price point. The leather is clear and blemish-free. What worries me is that it doesn't feel particularly durable. The strap and keeper are held on with a single rivet each, and I'm not sure they'll stand up. I felt the need to treat the straps gingerly or I would rip the rivet right out of the sheath. The thread used for the stitching looks a bit thin. We'll see how it stands up in the campsite.-I'll likely add a few more adjustment holes to the retaining strap. Right now they're on about a 1" center and I need an in-between position to really cinch down on the small axe. I have a punch for leather so no big deal but keep in mind that you may need to do this to fit your axe. This isn't a criticism, just the reality of making a one-size-fits-all blade guard fit your specific axe.-There are no mounting or hanging provisions on this cover. It isn't designed to hang on your belt or backpack. It's only a guard. I knew this going into it and prefer it this way, but if you plan to hike with this axe, keep in mind that you'll need to find a way to attach it to your pack or whatever by some other means.-It looks good. The leather is uniform and blemish free and the stitching is nice and even. The neatsfoot oil darkened the leather but it still looks fine to me.This is a decent universal guard for a typical single-bit axe. I'm a little worried about the longevity of the retaining strap but I'm not going to baby it. If it breaks, it breaks, and I'll either fix it or find something else. The price point is good and it looks relatively well made so I have my fingers crossed that it'll hold up. I'll update once it has a few camping trips on it.

Fits my large Walters felling axe just fine. It actually appears to be good quality and can be repaired. This is a real leather sheath that just might last as long as your axe.

Fits a Council 3.5lb Jersey Axe very well...leather is thick and well finished, immediately applied olive oil to mine and it took three coats in about 5 mins, so it was dry...but it's well made and should last a lifetime with care...

My axe has a 5.5 inch wide blade and this cover fits perfect. You may get it to fit a blade a little bigger if needed. The leather is not treated but this is not an issue. I just applied a leather treatment to make me feel better.

Well made mask for a large cutting bit. I used on a Stubi axe and it works well. Does what it for... Stops the axe biting you in transit. Good leather on my sample.

Fits regular axe heads(6.25in x3.75in). I like this case because it allows me to use the opposite side of the cutting edge without removing the sheath.

I don't usually write a review but felt I needed to in this instance. I recently bought a surplus German military axe which has a blade a little over 5 1/2 inches wide. I wanted to protect my axe edge and having great difficulty finding a guard that would fit my blade and fit my budget. I found this item and when people were saying it was "big" I thought it just might fit. I looked at the listed measurements and figured it was worth a chance. As you can see from the pictures it is almost as if this guard was built exactly for my axe!! I took several pictures so you can see the size of the axe and, therefore, the size of the guard. If you are buying for a "traditional" axe that is, say, 4" wide then this will work but understand it is a little big for that. But for my axe with a very wide axe head this fit perfectly!!It is great quality for such a reasonably priced axe guard!!

I bought this sheath for my Cold Steel Trail Boss and it works okay. The buckle and rivets are made of metal and the leather seems to be of pretty good quality (Though I am no expert on leather). There is also a welt which protects the edge of the blade and the stitching seems goodEach piece of leather (Welt, strap, sides, etc.) are 1/8 inch thick. The strap is 14 inches. The side where you insert the axe blade is about 6 and 7/8 inches long and the slit in which the actual blade goes is 5 and 3/4 inches long. The top is about 3 and 3/4 inches long and the bottom is about 2 and 1/2 inches long (Depending on where you consider the start of the curve (See pictures). The reason I bought this sheath was for my Cold Steel Trail Boss, and I am pretty pleased with its quality. The only problem I have (Which I expected when I purchased this sheath) is that it's a bit over an inch bigger than the blade of the Cold Steel Trail Boss. This is not a problem to me since it is one of the cheapest options that seems to be of good quality. The only problem I have with this, which I don't think others have reported is that the side of the rivet that holds the strap that faces the inside of the sheath scratched my axe head a little. This is not a big deal to me and I don't really mind, but I have included pictures so you can tell what I mean. All in all, I gave this sheath five stars because it does its job. it is as described, and it is a good value.
