pH tester

The technical definition of pH is that it is a measure of the activity of the hydrogen ion (H+) and is reported as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity. Therefore, water with a pH of 7 has 10-7 moles per liter of hydrogen ions, whereas a pH of 6 has 10-6 moles per liter. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14.

How pH affects aquatic life

Changes in the pH value of water are important to many organisms. Most organisms have adapted to life in water of a specific pH and may die if it changes even slightly. This is especially true of aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish eggs and fry.

The pH is a critical factor determining the health of a waterway. The factors that control it are complicated. As with many environmental concerns, we need to be aware of the implications of any impacts we have upon the environment.

The pH of pure water (H20) is 7 at 25°C, but when exposed to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, this equilibrium results in a pH of approximately 5.2. Because of the association of pH with atmospheric gasses and temperature, it is strongly recommended that the water be tested as soon as possible. The pH of the water is not a measure of the strength of the acidic or basic solution and alone does not provide a complete picture of the characteristics or limitations of the water supply.

Use-related problems with PH testers:

pH meter

• The value bounces erratically when the PH meter is turned on in the air, which is a common occurrence. It is impossible to utilize the value in the air as a reference

pH

• The water must be gently stirred (to remove the bubbles attached to the probe) and given time to stabilize before the PH meter can measure the water. During the test, it is common for the result to rise or fall abruptly. Do not simply insert it and start reading it right away.

pH meter

• A typical phenomenon of the PH electrode is the appearance of white crystalline salt around the electrode of the PH meter. Because measured solutions are drying, salt is deposited on the sensor's surface. The electrode can be submerged in RO or distilled water for a few hours and cleaning it.

Note, when you use the first time or resume use after a long time, it is recommended to make this procedure.

pH tester

· The electrode for the PH meter is made of fragile glass. Please don't touch it with your hands or drop it. Test the water only up to 50°C. Avoid testing the powerful acid and alkali because doing so will rupture the electrode glass.

Calibration

Calibration pH tester

There are three options for the calibration of the pH tester.

1. Calibration by one-point. In this case, the accuracy will be 0.5pH

2. Calibration by the two-point. In that case, the accuracy will be 0.2pH.

3. Calibration by the three-point. In that case, the accuracy will be 0.1pH.

1. The one-point calibration.

Create a 6.86 pH solution.

Take 250 ml of distilled or RO water.

Open the pack (6.86pH) and completely dissolve all powder. (There shouldn't be left powder in the pack and at the bottom of a glass)

1. Remove the protective cap.

2 First, rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper.

3. Turn on the pH tester by pressing the "ON/OFF" button.

4. Immerse the pH tester' in the solution (6.86pH) and wait for over 5 min. (CAN NOT BE OVER THE IMMERSION LINE)

5. Stir gently for ten seconds, and press "CAL" to see the displaying number going to 5, then release to find the 6.86pH calibration point.

6 The display starts flashing 6.86. You have to wait until the flashing stops before taking the tester out of the solution.

7. Calibration was ended. Don't forget to rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper after calibration.

1. The two-point calibration.

Create 4.00 and 9.18 pH solutions.

Take two glasses of 250 ml of distilled or RO water.

Open the pack (4.00pH) and completely dissolve all powder. (There shouldn't be left powder in the pack and at the bottom of a glass).

Do the same for the 9.18pH solution, using the 9.18pH pack.

4.00pH calibration

1. Remove the protective cap.

2 First, rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper.

3. Turn on the pH tester by pressing the "ON/OFF" button.

4. Immerse the pH tester' in the solution (4.00pH) and wait for over 5 min. (CAN NOT BE OVER THE IMMERSION LINE)

5. Stir gently for ten seconds, and press "CAL" to see the displaying number going to 5, and release, then SHORT PRESS at the button of "CAL" ONE TIME and release to find the 4.00pH calibration point.

6 The display starts flashing at 4.00. You must wait until the flashing stops before taking the tester out of the solution.

7. Calibration was ended. Don't forget to rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper.

9.18pH calibration

1. Remove the protective cap.

2 First, rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper.

3. Turn on the pH tester by pressing the "ON/OFF" button.

4. Immerse the pH tester' in the solution (9.18pH) and wait for over 5 min. (CAN NOT BE OVER THE IMMERSION LINE)

5. Stir gently for ten seconds, press "CAL" to see the displaying number going to 5, and release, then SHORT PRESS at the button of "CAL" TWO TIMES and release to find the 9.18pH calibration point.

6. The display starts flashing at 9.18. You have to wait until the flashing stops before taking the tester out of the solution.

7. Calibration was ended. Don't forget to rinse the electrode with distilled water, then suck it with filter paper.

3. The three-point calibration.

You have to make all that contains in one and two points calibration.

Inconsistent in PH reading. Not so easy to calibrate. It was very cheap, so I can't expect much. I trashed it because an incorrect reading is worse than no reading. I bought a different brand and high quality with high reviews for $99 and very pleased with it.

The problem with this product is NOT the product. It is the documentation! Written in pure Engrish, the purchaser is left to sort through a tiny sliver-like instruction manual that provides rough guidelines at the very best. "Bringing you safe life pleasure." What? Okay, so when do I need to calibrate, and when do I NOT need to calibrate? What are good readings, and what are bad readings for drinking water? Nothing like that, just a very rough set of rudimentary instructions (on-off, hold, etc). Please, just hire for $30 someone who can speak fluent English, with proper grammer, and re-write the instructions..... PLEASE!

I wanted something more exact than using test strips, for pH of my tank. After calibration, this was easy to use and provides quick results of pH that I tend to need to monitor more than anything in my tank.

I was excited about this product.... Untill i got it.The directions seemed to be written by AI.Completely incomprehensible. I had to go onto YouTube to find a calibration video since I had never done it before. The instructions were useless. But I found a video and matched it up best I could with the directions the meter came with. I did the calibration correctly according to the written instructions that came in the box.But every time I tried to test any sample of water, the readings were all over the place. Nothing consistent or accurate. I did everything right. Making sure to wash the tip off with distilled water and such. Nothing helped..I even decided to do little experiments with two samples of distilled water in the similar ceramic cups. The ph readings of both cups was wildly different. And the number would jump several numbers if I swirled the meter in the water. Often the meter would time out and shut off before I got a stable number reading. The number would just rise and fall without reason.I even tried to take a reading of the calibration solution again. The 6.86 solution literally has a ph of 6.86. That's the point.Nope.The meter was waaaay off and each testing of the solution was different.I tried calibrating the meter again, but it refused to.All in all, this was a complete waste of money. No way of telling if any of the ph readings are correct.I'm gonna go out and get pH test strips. The are less accurate but more consistent.Don't waste your time on this product.

It drifts with temperature so give it time to adjust to the temperature of the sample. It is also easy to calibrate if you buy the solutions. I found a cal video online for a similar model and the procedure was the same as this brand. The instructions are included but it was easy to follow after watching a video. For a cheap meter it is fairly simple.I recommend getting the three cal solutions and mixing them with distilled water. Once calibrated it stopped drifting as much and has performed well. Out the box it did a decent job but it did seem like it had to be on for a while or something had to settle.Out the box = 4 starsAfter Cal = 5 stars
