these are awesome! I tried watering spikes a couple of years ago, but they were ceramic, and they did not work at all. The bottles would empty in a couple of hours, so they were worthless for extending the length of time between watering. Then because of my previous experience with the watering spikes, I was afraid these would be like the ceramic ones. but they aren't at all the same. I know it says to use glass wine bottles, but I don't drink wine or any alcohol, so I don't have glass bottles. But they work wonderfully with plastic bottles. For my really large pots, I use 2 spikes with 2 liter soda bottles, and for smaller pots, I use 1 spike and a liter soda bottle. Each large one feeds off at a guess, maybe 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water per 24 hour period. I don't put my spikes all the way down in the soil, maybe half way, and I suspect that having it deeper in the soil might make them dispense more water per day. So I suggest if you are going on a trip, you get the spikes a few weeks before, and experiment to see what works best for you, as to how many spikes to put per pot or per plant, and how deep to set them into the soil. etc.I'm not sure if all terracotta spikes from different companies are created equal. These days there are so many things that are made with less material, smaller or thinner or whatever, in order to sell them cheaper. And I am sure that some mixtures of material, or thickness, or even size, could effect how well they hold water, and their durability. I definitely want to buy more as I don't have enough for all my pots, but I am definitely buying them from this company, and I recommend only these particular spikes.

All of the cones came in tact, unbroken, well-packaged. Tested the terra cotta cones out last week when we were away and they work very well. I used a 750 ml Pelligrino glass bottle filled with water and inserted upside down so that the cone would constantly refill with water and "trickle" water my very large potted plants. The plants were thriving and watered when I returned from my trip. I did water the plants quite a bit the night before and the morning I was leaving, I added the bottles filled with water.

I had doubts about leaving my many plants alone for 10 days. I had never used terracotta watering spikes. When I returned I was so pleased to find ALL of my plants healthy and happy! The long-necked beer bottles that I used were empty. The soil in all the pots was slightly moist. I could have vacationed another week and the plants would have been fine. Great product that works.

My wife and I travel often and our potted plants often suffered, even when we had friends on duty to water them. These spikes work great and are an inexpensive way to keep the plants healthy by allowing their soil to stay moist. If you've never worked with terra cotta before, be mindful that it is not cement. Just press the spike into the pots soil, fill an empty wine bottle with water, and insert the bottle into the spike. So easy to use. Just be sure to remove the bottle if you want to reposition the spike. The torque from the bottle can snap a spike.

I bought these plant spikes the end of June but didn’t put them into soil until the end of July. Although a good concept, they are difficult to insert into soil (a threaded shape would be better) and after a month's use this spike shattered from just the use of a plastic liter bottle.Unfortunately I’m anticipating further problems with the remaining spikes but the warranty has expired and nothing to do but accept that these are not built to last.Good thing China didn’t make their terracotta soldiers from this stuff.

Was hesitant to purchase due to many reviews with breaking. Well packaged. Soaked them and wet the soil before putting in. The trick seems to me to prevent breaking is the turn while pushing into soil. My husband didn’t listen and one broke.

These little stakes are awesome! They kept my plants alive for a week while I was gone and they were easy to use. One of them did break a little when I put it in the ground so they are fragile. Good price!

Easy to use but make sure you dig a hole ahead of time versus pushing the spike into the soil with a bottle attached or the spike could shatter. I learned this the hard way….

My household is conserving water, so watering my plants until the water runs through the bottom of the pot isn’t the ideal method for me anymore. I’ve been looking for self-watering solutions for my decorative potted plants inside and outside, which don’t involve an open vessel of standing water. Because, mosquitos.I was hoping these spikes would be the ticket, and they do not disappoint!I broke my first clay spike when I put it in a pot, fitted a small glass bottle on it, didn’t think it was deep enough so I crammed it in deeper by pushing the bottle down. Broken clay—whoops! (Better than broken glass though!) learned my lesson and dig a nice deep whole FIRST.I use these spikes with full size wine bottles in my bigger plants, and smaller glass soda or Topo Chico bottles in smaller pots. I think it looks cute on my patio where we’re often enjoying a beverage. In my indoor plants, the bottles are concealed in foliage.I used all 8 in the package rather quickly, and had more pots! I did try just filling bottles and “planting “ them upside down in pots without using clay spikes. I had mixed results. About half the time, the bottle just emptied right out inti the soul and drained out the bottom of the pot. So… I’m back to buy more spikes!I’ve been using these for about a month, and so far my plants are happy and so am I! We have had some gnarly spring storms roll through with high winds, heavy rain and some small hail and these spikes have stayed put (with a bottle in them), weathering just fine.

I repotted some plants so the top of the terracotta spike is level with the soil. I used cobalt blue glass longnecks filled with water and inverted them into the spikes. No evaporation occurs and the plants take just the water they need via osmosis. I no longer over water or under water my plants. A perfect solution!
