I gave this item 2 stars for false advertisement. This is a 2-pound sledge. Plain and simple. 1st, it is covered in stickers and plastic from the head of the hammer to the very bottom. I took off what I thought was a protective plastic coating on the handle, and there was slick plastic adhered to the handle (Picture included). I had to sand down the entire handle (ruining a perfectly good belt because of the adhesive) just to make it usable. Now, let's talk about the head. Yes, it is covered with some type of blue resin or something. I don't care about the color, but it also covers the striking head of the crosspean. So that had to be ground off. And the whole head is coated in some type of plastic coating that had to be ground off as well. The face is neither flat nor rounded enough to use as a rounding hammer. So that had to be ground as well. Might as well have spent $10 on a 2-pound sledge and completely redressed it. I would have saved money, and at least I would know what I was getting into. As far as the construction. The handle seems sturdy and the head is made of decent metal.

I've been a Vaughan hammer user since the 1970s when I was employed as a carpenter, still have my 2 old Vaughan framing hammers. Now retired and getting into blacksmithing as a hobby, Vaughan is my choice for a blacksmith hammer too.

I am a professional blacksmith and I teach blacksmithing at a community college. We are always looking for inexpensive hammers for students. I liked the idea of this one because it is made in the USA. It turns out to be a great hammer. Most of the cheap hammers are rather soft and deform quickly. This is as hard as many of the old blacksmithing hammers I have. The face will need to be dressed - smoothed and a small edge radius added. The face is on the small side which is good for smaller work, but not so good for larger work.

The hammer head is not color black like the picture, but is baby blue color. The wood handle is thicker then I thought, but perhaps that is too help dissipate vibration. Because I like the old Vaughan hammer that I have, I'll keep this one to see how well it performs; the description did claimed that this hammer is tempered in 3 areas and I am hoping it performs.

Ha! There are certainly some people here who are very sensitive about the color of their iron. After reading the reviews, I was expecting some heinous puke-worthy color - like Carolina blue. It is actually a very pleasant royal blue color, and not all that bright even. Distinctively colored hammers are actually a good thing - to help you distinguish them on the bench or tool rack. Face has a bit of a crown and really needs dressing only on edges (see photos taken out of the box). I find the peen to be fine as is - nicely radiused. Handle needs stripping and customization, but they all do. If you want a 2.5# basic cross peen, this is a good option. Great value for the price, and if the color embarrasses you, you probably needed a makeover anyway.

This is a 5 star hammer but the picture isn't what it is. It's blue. Like BRIGHT BLUE. If you care about that, then just know that the picture does not represent the product. That said, this is a great hammer. You must grind off the polyurethane coating (or whatever it is) before hitting hot metal and I'd also recommend hitting some then grinding the handle to fit your hand a bit. Oil it after. All-in-all this is going to be a great hammer that'll last me a long while.
