Had to retire my over 10 year old PC but wanted to keep the CD/DVD Read/Write drives. My solution was the Vantec SATA storage adapter with USB 3.0. I removed the CD/DVD drives from my PC and connected one of them to the SATA port on the Vantec adapter. Plugged the USB 3.0 cable into my Laptop (also connect to a Laptop docking station when using another Laptop). It just started working with no drivers, etc. Couldn't have been easier and now I am able to run applications, play music and create picture DVD's using any application that can see a CD or DVD in Windows 10 or 11. The performance appears to be better than it was in my old PC, which is probably due to the USB 3.0 connectivity. The adapter also supports SATA hard drives, but I have not utilized it for that purpose. However if I need it in the future, the specs says that Vantec SATA adapter supports any SATA drive. So for the $20 this is the best solution that I've found and highly recommend it to anyone.

Purchase two in order to use a Blu Ray Writer (yes I know it’s old tech but I still very much use physical media for various things) and a external Drive. Works absolutely flawlessly with both. Windows picked up both devices first time.Build quality is solid and over all I have to say the product is reliable and does exactly what it was designed to do. If you need an easy way to connect SATA optical drives or storage devices via USB, this is a great option.

Nice interface to sata devices. The main piece has the sata and power connector in one small rectangular piece. The power and usb cable plugs into this so its easy to plug into any sata device with this one piece with both connectors on it. It has a on switch so its easy to test devices before it gets installed or to use your dvd burner or load hard disk before installing in a system. Overall 5 stars looks quality and was easy to use.

My PC case has no provision for an optical drive, I bought this so I could use my Blue-Ray Writer and it works perfectly just as if it were connected internally.

The gizmo was easy to set up and allows quick switching of devices. The LED flows solid red when on and blinks when the device attached to it is in use.Lack of full chassis means that the connector brick may easily be disconnected from the optical drives SATA connectors and is likely more prone to jostles or jolts. But that's a small thing and for something quick and easy between multiple devices, even disk drives, this is slick.

I bought this because I upgraded my 15 year old PC case (and internals) and the new cases pretty much don't come with a place for an optical drive. I have a Blu Ray burner I still use though. If you want a 5.25" drive enclosure it's about $60-70 which is outrageous; this was $20. I would prefer my burner in an enclosure but this works perfectly well; just looks kind of sloppy. The connector doesn't connect to my burner as secure as I'd like. It works perfectly fine, but given how much smaller the connector is to the drive it's just a bit wonky. Probably would match better with a 3.5" drive. That and the short USB cable it comes with knocks off a star; gonna have to buy a longer USB cable as the one it comes with is only 2-3ft long.

I just got it and tested it. So I cannot comment on how long it will last but it appears to be well built and good quality, so I would expect long life.Pros:- USB 3.0 speed appears to perform as expected- Downward compatible to USB 2.0 (I tested it and it works fine)- 2 amp at 12V power supply should be ample for any hard drive or burner- Easy connections- On / off switchCons:32 inch long USB cable supplied is pretty short and 48 inch long power cable is also pretty short, but in combination it probably won't be where you want it, and rather it will be where the short cables dictate it be located.Overall, I am very happy with it and feel it is good value.

This USB/SATA adapter uses the excellent JMicron JMS578 chip, and not one of the underwhelming ASMedia chips that some of the competing adapters use. This means that this adapter gives you proper UASP speed/functionality on the Linux mainline kernel, currently at 5.18. Something you're unlikely to get from an adapter using an ASMedia storage chip when using Linux.I can confirm this works on a 12TB 3.5 HD.Other things that stand out about this adapter is that the USB cable is removable, it has a built in on/off toggle switch, and they didn't cheap out on the 12V adapter power cable length, like the last competing adapter like this I bought. This USB to SATA adapter checks all the boxes:- Uses the JMicron JMS578 USB storage controller, so it is UAS compatible on Linux for the fastest transfer speeds.- Removable USB cable.- Decent length of cable on the 12V power adapter.- Power switch on the device.- Works with a 12TB hard drive.

Having previously tried various Chinese devices through Amazon that were unable to have my Windows 11 Pro (x64) operating system recognise my old Pioneer BDR-209EBK internal optical drive and therefore had to be returned, I finally found this device after a good deal of forum searching and it works perfectly. I have not tried it with formerly internal HDDs yet but I am wholly confident that it will work. I would therefore highly recommend this device to all who have old but working optical drives & hard disk drives from old computer builds but no bay or provision in their current computer rigs for the installation of an optical drive or not enough space for all the old HDDs they might have. I am absolutely delighted.

This review is for the Vantec CB-ST00U3 NexStar USB 3.0 to SATA 6Gbps Optical/Storage AdapterAfter my music hard drive failed, and I lost all my FLAC CD rips, I needed something to hook up an old DVD optical drive so I could start ripping CDs again. I don't have an optical drive in my main PC (NZXT H440), and I wanted an external option I could use across multiple computers. This fits the bill nicely. Small and portable so I can throw it in a bag, and cheap enough to be soft on my wallet (external 5.25 enclosures are $50? What?). As a plus, I could use it with any hard drive or SSD as well. Also, USB 3.0 speeds rock. Plus, plus plus. Not all is perfect, though:The adapter block is small, but it has no support of its own. It's not heavy by any means, but the entire weight of it is supported by my DVD drive's SATA and SATA power ports. This may or may not be an issue if you plan to leave it plugged into a 5.25: drive for an extended period. This probably isn't an issue with a 3.5" hard drive, due to drive thickness. The cords are short, especially the USB cord. This seems to be an industry standard for USB 3.0 peripherals - super short USB cord.Overall, though this is a net positive. Windows 10 recognized my DVD drive right away, and I'm ripping CDs all day long with AcurateRip.
