I am an intermediate player in a number of ensembles, and I noticed an instant improvement in my tone, which was already pretty good. It also makes tonguing a little easier. These are subtle differences that are likely more valuable to an intermediate or advanced player who gigs or plays regularly, than to a beginner or infrequent player.

If you are looking for a "classical" / symphonic type of sound, this and some compatible reeds take care of lots of that transition... assuming you are using lesser mouthpieces etc.The amount of control and expressiveness this added based on the unit provided with a student instrument is immense. I am an oboist looking to double on clarinet and the instrument I have now is nothing special -- a Vito student instrument. Still, with this mouthpiece it produces excellent sound and is much more controllable than with the stock mouthpiece.I had been using rather stiff reeds to start with (3.0 Vandoren traditional). Vandoren recommends this unit be used with 3.5 and greater stiffness reeds, due to small opening etc. That should be even better -- but even more stiff. So not for everyone.

I am a bit late to the game, having just purchased my first Black Diamond mouthpiece. I only wish I had bought one sooner! Shoot, I wish I had one back when I was a student -- but they weren't even a thought in Vandoren's engineers. Regardless of when I got it, I have to say that this mouthpiece is worth the investment.I am playing on an old grenadilia (wood) intermediate clarinet manufactured back in the 1970s. My old mouthpiece, a Vandoren 2RV (the precursor to the 5RV) has been in my case and on my instrument for years, and while it served me well back in the day, when I picked up my clarinet again after many years, it no longer served my needs. I wanted a mouthpiece that would improve intonation, handle staccato and slurs, and go over the break without issue. The BD5 appeared to be the mouthpiece that could provide me with the sound I wanted.Happily, the BD5 has met all my expectations! After a few weeks of breaking-in, the BD5 mouthpiece plays with full sound. I love its responsiveness. My intonation has dramatically improved, particularly in the upper registers. With all of these gains, could there be any drawbacks? Well, yes. The improved intonation in the upper register has led to poorer intonation in the lower registers. Even so, this mouthpiece is worth the price. I'll work on correcting the intonation issues and enjoy playing old favorites on this wonderful new mouthpiece.

The sound is fine and it is a good intermediate mouthpiece. The one received had a chip fall off without hitting anything. It simply broke while playing and it looks like it was not formed correctly. It didn't affect the sound so it stayed in use.

I have played the traditional Bb clarinet for the better part of 8-9 years. Recently I decided to pick up the bass clarinet so I could learn something new. The mouthpiece that it came with was fine, but not nearly as responsive as I would prefer. I have always used Vandoren products, I have a few different Bb mouthpieces from them, some ligatures, reeds you name it i've got it.This mouthpiece is wonderful, it has a beautiful tone, its very responsive, and I would recommend this to any Bb players looking to switch to a bass clarinet.

Love this is the best mouthpiece I ever tried in my life , I noticed when I got it the cork was a little too thick but after I put some grease on the crock I managed to get the mouthpiece in the clarinet barrel and the crock became the exact size it was supposed to be, love this mouthpiece it have a really good staccato and rich and dark sound on high register ..Well Done vandoren

I tried this mouthpiece a while back and found it to be too constricting and the sound very dull. I’ve recently come back to it but with very different reeds. I use Behn Aria reeds with this mouthpiece and it works great! The Aria reeds are very responsive, and very colorful and bright. They balance perfectly with the BD5 which is very dark sounding, sometimes too dark. It would seem this combo of a resistant mouthpiece with very vibrant reed is very comfortable and stable to play compared to a very free blowing mouthpiece with very stuffy sounding reed.

Vandoren M15 Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece is a good one. It is easy to blow high notes with a good sound. It should use 3 1/2 or harder reeds. I also like profile 88' beak angle. I feel comfort for this angle.
