I’ve had this for over a year now and although I was at first not sure how much it was actually doing, I’ve found that it makes a huge difference in keeping a clean tank without the need of a large filter. It’s quiet, small and stays in place. It’s obviously very durable since I’ve had it so long and is well designed.

I was using a similar sponge filter from a different brand before, and the water in my 6 gallon aquarium was always a little cloudy. I decided to try this sponge filter based on the reviews and because I thought the bio balls were kind of interesting. After using it for a few days the water cleared up completely. I've heard this filter needs a strong air pump but honestly I just use it with a mini 1.5 watt air pump and it seems to work fine. I'll update this review if anything changes but so far so good.

After reading all the rave reviews of this product I felt sure it would be great in my 10 gal aquarium. After assembling, cleaning it, the next morning I woke up and my tank was twice as cloudy as when I put it in. I took it out and put my old single sponge in and the tank cleared in a couple of hours. I had a new pump with way more power and it seemed to be struggling. I couldn’t run the air stone the same time as the unit. This to me was a piece of crap. I didn’t even box it to return I was so mad I chucked it in the garbage!

It's a sponge filter with decent quality plastic that seems to be better than most of the other market. (definitely more durable than any of the Lee's product). Sponge can be removed easily for cleaning, you do not need to disassemble any components to do so. The outlet can also be adjusted so you can have it in or out of water- I usually have out of water for good water circulation. Instead being sitting on the substrate, it attaches to the glass which actually prevent junk build up on the bottom.Even better that it has little room for you to add any of your filter media for extra biochemical filtration power. There are three things that you need to be aware of:-You will need more than 1w air pump for it to work, so if you're using USB air pumps or other small form, it may not work well. Regular 2.5w air pump, like Tetra whisper will do just fine.-**you MUST wash sponge in hot water before using it** It may or may not hurt the fish, but the sponges that I received had strong chemical smell. I had to wash it in running hot water, in the bucket for good 15 minutes to get rid of the smell.-this sponge filter works by culturing bacteria (that breaks down ammonia from fish's excrements to safer substances) into the sponge. **IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT BACTERIA OUT OF BOX**, you will need to cycle the tank properly WITH THIS FILTER before using it. If "tank cycling" sounds unfamiliar to you, then please go research that before getting a fish. If you have already added the fish before reading the tank cycling, I'd suggest getting a FritzZyme turbo product, a bottled live bacteria.

I’m a convert to sponge filters and I have been slowly switching my 5 tanks. I have been so impressed with the way these particular filters clean the tanks and help maintain the ideal water parameters. This filter, like my others that are the same concept but a different brand, work really well to keep the nitrates down. When I had HOB filters my nitrates were at 20. Since I switched to the sponge filters, and changed nothing else, my nitrates are around 5. This filter is easy to set up and fits nicely in my 5 gallon tank. I clean the sponge once a month by squishing it in the tank water that I took out from my weekly water change.

We bought Alex (the axolotl) a new sponge filter after his regular starter filter broke. I have fish experience but this is our first aquatic amphibian so I wanted to make sure I got him something stronger than a Walmart brand anyways. After reading reviews I picked an air pump line in my order however, I expected there to be some sort of motor in the filter and to my surprise I was very wrong. This filter ONLY includes:plastic filter casing, 4 baggies of media balls, 4 sponges, 2 suction cups. But no instructions (I mean… it’s kind of dummie proof if I can figure it out in under 10min) you WILL need to buy an AIR PUMP and AIR LINE/TUBE.I also read that someone had experienced a chemically smell before a random illness attacked her fish school, due to this I ran everything under extremely hot water and allowed to cool before placing it in my tank. This is probably something you should always do anyways, no matter the filter…We found the spout could be either over or under the waters surface, and the colors really did bring a lot of life to the tank.Overall we are very satisfied- after a week of no filter, and a late night 85% water change, I expected the water to be a foggy grey hue, but this morning it actually looks awesome!Warning-do not put the foam in or on a Sandy surface, I know “why the hell would you do that?” Well, I did but I did smartly and watched it closely for the first three minutes and noticed it did pick up ALOT of sand so I quickly moved it up a bit and as long as it’s not ON the sandy, the sand is heavy enough to stay in place for the most partOne month update:I watched the filter for about 20minutes the other day to figure out what the weird sound was in my fish tank, it didn’t take me long to find that the bottom half of the filter was loose, while many have said there’s fell apart, I was determined to find out why. My seams were leaking air. This filter is built of plastic, ceramic media, and 2 sponges. That’s it.No glue is to be found, and the fittings fit well with notches ingraved, showing me this was an error on my part. After washing the plastic throughly and wiping it down to make sure there was no algae build up, the leaks were all sealed and my tank was once again in clean condition within the hour!I swear by this filter now, our aoxies’ tank looks fabulous and we will more than likely stick with this filter. Updated pictures as well to show my tank one month ago and then again today.

Well made, Mechanical sponge and biological ceramic filtration. Recommend for use in smaller tanks or large bowls with a few small fish. You need to add an air pump obviously. Clever design.

This is a good filter for a small quarantine tank - which is for what I use it for. Depending on your pump, it can actually filter a lot of water and give a good flow. Easy to use, easy to clean and very customizable even with the little container for biomaterial. The outlet can be extended and rotated so one can adjust the outflow. In general, I really like it. The only thing I do not like is that after using it for a few weeks, the bubbles come out on the side of the seal. Not sure why, whenever I fix it, it takes a few hours and happens again. Almost like the rubber inside is shrinking in the water and cannot seal it off completely (minus 1 star). The other thing is that the plastic feels a bit cheap and every time I clean the little container and screw it open, it I feel it would break any second (minus 1 star). Good for the prcie and powerful with the right pump.
