Product Description

There has never been a cyber criminal they couldn't catch...until now...The more people who watch...the faster the victims die.

Untraceable fuses Saw with The Net in a perverse yet moralistic story about a psychopath who broadcasts acts of torture over the internet--all to better reveal the twisted underbelly of the American public, who hasten the victims' deaths simply by looking at the website. FBI agent Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane, her mature-sexy mojo tamped down but still simmering in the corners of her eyes and the nape of her neck) launches a cyberhunt for the killer, only to find herself and her team caught up in his murderous scheme. It's hard to make tapping on a keyboard and staring at a computer screen exciting, but Untraceable does its best by making Marsh and her cybercrimebusting partner (Colin Hanks, King Kong) rattle off cascades of jaunty techno-jargon and do impressive bits of long-distance surveillance. The movie aims for the audience that flocked to see Ashley Judd in thrillers like Kiss the Girls and Double Jeopardy, but it's hard to say if fans of Lane's romantic fare like Under the Tuscan Sun or Must Like Dogs will enjoy the queasy violence. Nonetheless, the cast--including Mary Beth Hurt (The World According to Garp) as Marsh's mother--does a solid job and the movie clips along at an aggressive pace, maintaining tension throughout. --Bret Fetzer

I remember when this movie was out in theaters but was never able to get around to seeing it. I bought it on DVD from Amazon five years ago and finally saw it the other night. I really liked it.Part Saw, part Silence of the Lambs, this movie was a blend of both. Violent and gory and a bit far-fetched but nonetheless it kept me on the edge of my seat. Why a man with his capabilities would go this far I don't know. he had a grievance, you say but I know that if I had a grievance like him I'd have hacked into Wall Street and enriched myself whilst using my newfound wealth to destroy those who hurt my dad in other more legal or semi-legal ways. the guy went too far and gained very little. What real satisfaction was there for him? I loved the location being the Pacific Northwest. Here is Leonard Maltin's take on the film. Formulaic but effective thriller about a computer savvy psycho who devises the ultimate killer app: On his website, he offers down streaming video of captives tormented by torture devices that grow increasingly more painful, and eventually lethal, as voyeurs worldwide click to watch. Not for the squeamish. About as satisfying as a better than average episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Diane Lane is persuasive as the FBI agent on the killer's trail.I wish they would make more movies like this for women to play. They are so rare in Hollywood. Maltin gave it Two and a Half Stars out of Four. I say Four Stars our of Five at least and maybe Four and a Half Stars. I'm the 431st person to review this movie.A. Nathaniel Wallace, Jr.

Interesting plot. Good script. Diane Lane is pretty much always a sure bet. There was one goof. The first murder victim was said to be a Vietnam Veteran. When the murderer posts his date of birth and date of death on the website, he was born in 1955. You have to be 18 to join the military, which he would have been in 1973. President Nixon pulled our troops out of Vietnam in 1973. He could not have joined the military and been sent into combat before our troops were brought home.

Cyber crime is serious business. This movie gets the verbiage correct, the methodology correct, the capabilities of the IP correct and exposes how crass the internet can be! Explanations for technology are not given. However, remember the buzz words and you can learn about it with an online search! The internet was originally called DarpaNet, for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration. Darpa has the responsibiity of advancing research to aid in the defense of our nation! The results of their work are extensive on the civilian side, so don't put down defense research! The purpose of DarpaNet was to make a Command and Control System, that had no single point of failure, and would allow the US DoD structure to withstand a nuclear attack. DarpaNet met its design goals. We are the benefactors of it. Of course, the WWW was an extension to DarpaNet with the work of HTML and the Browser. This made the Internet what it is today.Untraceable is the tale of one malevolent www emotionally disturbed user's desire to wrought vengeance on his perceived enemies. The movies plot is tight. Some characters are more completely defined that others. However, the tension and terror built through the second act, with a third act that brings a satisfying conclusion to the story arc. Some story lines are left to the imagination, but so what! What movie completes every story line in less that a week. If this were a movie that extended over a week, with relief breaks for exercise of many forms; well I don't think I would last through such a movie! I think I would be asleep after 240 minutes!

If you like a suspense film without bells and whistles, irrelevant side stories, unnecessary chase scenes, huge explosions and the sort, this might well be for you. Someone has rigged the internet (what do I know about such things?) so that he cannot be traced while he is able completely to mask his identity. On his internet "show" he murders people in rather bizarre fashion, the rate of movement to death being determined by how fast the audience increases. Any more details about the killings will reveal parts of the story that you should learn by watching. Tracking him down are two FBI agents in its internet related specialty and the local police, represented by a handsome detective. On the FBI side, the chief investigator, is a good looking widow, whose late husband, it turns out, was known by the detective. The suspense builds up as the deaths come closer to home until the tense denouement.I enjoyed it, not only for the plot and the solid performances by all, but also, as I have suggested, by its sticking to the point and letting the tension flow naturally from the events. The computer/internet stuff made all the sense it had to for me. How experts will react, I have no way of knowing. I do recommend the film to those who like a degree of suspense and do not need buckets of blood to be entertained.(The deaths on the internet, while few in number, are not pleasant in concept, but not shown in detail either.)
