The instructions are pretty horrible. You need to be good with computers and electrical hardware both.Their website is pretty nice.I was able to d/l the software for the VDL48 pretty easily.Software would NOT run on Win 11, just put in a request, so we'll see what the answer is.Ran their software FINE on a Win 7 laptop.NOTE, You NEED to run the software to program this device.Really, you're only setting the alarm if you want it,How long between readings,Enable Alarm or not,and an LED indicator flash interval.Once you get it going, it seems to work OK.I was able to COPY a set of files from it after hitting stop.It seems that it starts up again. It's a little flaky doing this.I think if you just Want It To Work, plugging it in, running the program, pushing the settings is likely your best bet.I already bought another one.

So first off, the instructions are a little sketchy, but basically I inserted the mini-CD that comes with it, loaded and installed the program on to the PC, plugged in the logger and called up the program. The logger was recognized right away and from there I had to do a little experimenting to understand how to set the use definable parameters and voila it worked. It is a little slow, but for my application it works just fine. I am using it for measuring battery voltage while a battery is being discharged under load to characterize its capacity. For that application slowness is not an issue at all. The results can be saved or directly copied from the app and pasted into Excel for graphing which is exactly what I was looking for.Another good point is that it has set screws for attaching your own wiring connections if you like, instead of using the supplied clips.I think it is a good value for what it is.

When you need to monitor a voltage to determine reliability over time this device will do the job. It has a resolution of one second with an adjustable alarm set. The unit can be instant on or manually trigged or from a computer in real time. Very handy device.

Cons:1. Requires proprietary software to work. You must install a setup program on a Windows system to configure the data logger or it cannot be made to start logging right from the box. There is no way to set any logging configuration without the program. The GUI is not intuitive and there is no documentation for it. Professional tools made for field use do not require lugging a Windows PC around to set things like sample rate. It has a real-time mode that can be seen in the setup software, but there is no way to connect this to automation apps.2. The software only runs under Windows. There is no Mac version nor published API to use in any other environment. It is a typical Chinese-made toy made for PC users and DIY, not professionals. Setup of devices is one at a time, highlighting the nature of this device as merely an expensive toy.3. Resolution can only go down to 1 second samples and it has no trigger capability. It can only record for less than 9 hours at 1 second intervals, so the kinds of events it can capture are severely limited.4. The display serves no more purpose than one or two LEDs could, which might have made the package smaller. Also, the USB-A plug is also a poor choice for a field instrument, since smaller jacks could have been selected. As it is, the device is quite large for its function.5. The unit takes an expensive and not-so-common 1/2 AA battery that is not rechargeable. Changing the battery requires a tool that is not on the unit.6. The unit is not at all water or moisture proof. The unit has an easily misplaced dust cover for the USB-A plug and push button switch. The cover provides no moisture protection and is certainly a lot cheaper than rubber covers found on professional devices.7. It comes with cheap alligator clips attached, and for any serious use must be swapped with higher quality crocodile clips or banana jacks which are not supplied, but would be expected on any professional device.Pros:1. It is inexpensive compared to professional data loggers.2. Replacement of the leads is simplified by two exposed screws.3. The USB-A plug means that for many users a separate cable will not be needed. However, an adapter may be needed for many systems made this decade which only have USB-C jacks.Overall, I do not consider this device worth its cost. As I keep mentioning, it is really just a toy or a home hobbyist sort of device, not made for any use as a professional, which makes its price unreasonable. For the hobbyist, better solutions can be made. For a data logger to track down automotive issues, control system debug, recording sensor data, or other field use, this device is not recommended.

The Triplett VDL48 Datalogger unit instructions, in my opinion were written for someone already familiar with this device.Nowhere on the instruction sheet was any mention that you needed to insert the unlabeled CD into your computer to set up the datalogger for recording voltage. After running a voltage test, downloading and printing the test.pdf file, I was surprised by the misspelled "DataPonit" chart label. The only feature I like about the Triplett VDL48 is the ability to read the measured voltage.
