I ride with an Australian saddle which doesn't have fenders on the stirrup straps so I need to wear chaps or half chaps to keep my legs from getting pinched. I have a pair of leather half chaps that the elastic had lost its stretch. I wanted to get some new ones but found these mesh ones that seemed to be a great idea for riding in Florida heat.I wear an 11 boot in women's, a 9 1/2 in men's and my calf is about 16 inches in riding tights. I was going to order the XL but then I read a review that said these were so stretchy to order what was cheapest and it would probably fit. The 'large' was the cheapest when I was ordering so I went with that. I'm glad I did. They fit fine but are a bit loose. I only need them to protect the inside of my leg which they do with a strip of solid material running down the inside. The rest is a breathable mesh. I find them easier to put on than the other kind that I had. They are stretchy enough at the bottom to make it easy to snap the strap at the bottom of the zipper. There is a Velcro strap at the top to snug the chap to your calf so there's no problem with it sliding down even if the rest of the chap is loose. Once I get them on I forget I'm wearing them. They stay in place with no leg pinching or rubbing. My riding boots are steel-toe so I often go straight from riding to doing work around the place, lately mowing with a push mower and brush removal. The chaps protect my riding tights from getting snagged on brush and keep most things from dropping inside my boots.I consider these a best buy and happily recommend them.

Originally ordered a large based on the measurements, but they were way too long and loose at the knee and ankle. Ended up returning and ordering the medium instead. I am 5'2" and have a 16.5" calf. These chaps are super stretchy and breathable. They fit well over my paddock boots and aren't loose. Constructed well for an inexpensive half chap. I haven't ridden in then yet but I'm confident they'll hold up at least for the summer.

OK for casual riding. The material has so much give to it, though, that if you need to apply your leg aids diligently, the velco band at the top doesn't tighten sufficiently to prevent the half chap from sliding down your leg, bunching up inelegantly at your ankle. Nope, I have not purchased too large a size, neither are my calves skinny. I usually get 'wider than normal' half chaps or boots, so if I hadn't read other reviews, I would ordinarily have purchased Large. However, other reviewers state that the material is stretchy, so I opted for Medium. Medium felt about right going on. I'm 5'4", medium build. Bought this for summer use so I could get my leather half chaps cleaned, hoping that the mesh would be cooler and easier to keep clean. They are undoubtably cooler and 'wash n wear', but schooling dressage with a horse who needs 'a lot of leg', pretty soon I was getting pinched by the stirrup leathers because the half chaps were, literally, falling down on the job. Can't return them, so I'm going to attempt to stiffen the top with a band of blanket webbing and shorten the fixed end of the velco strap so as to get a good snug fit. After I reinforced the top inside with a 2-inch piece of horse blanket webbing and shortened the ultrasuede strap securing the hardware that the velco tab runs through, I was able to secure the top of the half chap snugly enough that it stayed put through an hour plus lesson. With this adjustment the chaps are now perfectly serviceable, but not everyone could or would want to do this. Took about an hour to make this alteration on both legs, time which included fiddling with my conventional sewing machine which needed some persuasion to sew through all thicknesses in some spots.

I have given these 4 stars only because I will not get the chance to try them out in the saddle for a few weeks, and don't want to rate them just on appearance alone. I will update the review after I have used them for awhile. As far as appearance goes, they look well made and sturdy. I didn't have any trouble with putting them on, or using the zipper.First, I'd like to say that I purchased a size Medium because they were on sale. I find that half chaps are sized very randomly, and depending on the brand, I can fit in Mediums, Large, or XL, or XXL, and on up. I didn't think I had wide calves, but I have yet to find any standard size tall boot that fits me (and I'm not ready to commit the funds for custom boots just yet) so apparently, according to most manufacturers' standards, 16.5in calves at the widest part is quite wide. The mediums were significantly cheaper than the larges, and although I knew it was a gamble that they may not fit, I have another pair of half chaps that are mediums that do fit, I thought it was worth a try, and if they didn't fit, they'd make a nice gift for someone else. Luckily, they do have some stretch to them, and they DID fit :D They are snug to put on over my thickest pair of breeches, tall boot socks, and paddocks (I wanted to have as many layers on as possible to see if they would stretch), but they are not so tight that they cause any discomfort. I was perfectly happy to walk around the house with them on, and they felt good on my legs offering support without constriction. I think with repeated use, they will stretch out some and be easier to put on, although it really didn't take much effort to put them on fresh out of the bag.I LOVE the mesh design. This summer I am taking lessons at a facility that does not cancel lessons due to the heat, like my past lesson barns did (very surprising to me, they actually train year round), so I had to invest in a bunch of heat friendly gear, and I was delighted to find that not only do these exist, but they were inexpensive as well. I have been going with only paddocks and leaving my heavy leather chaps behind, but I am finding that my very thin summer tights don't protect well enough from the leathers like my thicker breeches do. I normally have no issues with sores, rubbing, or pinching when wearing my breeches sans chaps, but after getting summer weight tights, they do not protect my leg at all, and I could use more support. I don't know how long these mesh chaps will last, but if they only last as long as I need them through the summer heat, I will be happy, as they are affordable enough, I can purchase another set next year if I want. I spent some time searching online, and I really wasn't able to find any other half chap like this, or could I find it for a better price than here on amazon.UPDATE: These chaps were great for summer lessons. They did exactly what they needed to do. They protected my legs while not being as hot as more traditional style chaps. I only wore them for weekly lessons and dusted them off after every use, and they were fine for this purpose. I do not know how well they would last for daily use, but like I said earlier for me they are cheap enough I would be comfortable replacing each year if needed. Awesome chaps, I recommend for hot weather riding!
