I'm an old hand at kombucha making, but haven't made any in a few years because it was taking up too much space in my refrigerator. I finally sprung for a beverage fridge and decided to get a batch going again, which meant I needed a SCOBY. This kit was the only one I found that included what I considered to be a reasonable amount of starter tea, and it was highly enough rated that I decided to go for it.As other reviewers have noted, both the plastic bag holding the SCOBY and the plastic bottle with the starter tea were under a great deal of pressure, and it's a little amazing that they didn't burst during shipping. They were definitely deformed! I would seriously suggest that either the packaging be modified to account for the amount of time this product is in the warehouse and en route to the customer or that the logistics be modified so that the product has less time from factory to customer. I seriously got the impression here that I was extremely lucky and that if it had been as much as a day or two more I would have had a real mess on my hands opening the package up.However, I have no complaints about the resulting kombucha. The kit produced a gallon of good quality product, and I've got a two and a half gallon second batch about ready to go into secondary ferment.

I am a long time kombucha brewer (over 20 years), and had taken a break for a while, so had to order a new scoby. I have ordered from this company before with good results. This time, however, the scoby and starter arrived in extremely bloated packaging, as others who left reviews had also experienced - I gave the company another shot anyways, which turned out to be a mistake. The plastic bottle was so bloated, it wouldn’t stand up because the bottom of the bottle bulged so badly, and the bag containing the scoby was so inflated it ripped open the outside bag containing it and the bottle of starter - see photo.I received the package the day after I ordered it, and started brewing the next day. Made the sweet tea and started brewing just as I have done a hundred times before. Kept it at 78-80 degrees F with a heat wrap, again, just as I’ve always done. After 2 full weeks, nothing was happening, no new scoby was forming, then finally, mold started forming on the surface (see photo), so I tossed it.I won’t buy from this company anymore unless they can demonstrate better quality control. Won’t pay for this garbage again.

I received the starter and SCOBY within a day of ordering it, and I immediately made a batch of tea for kombucha. The starter was nice and strong and the SCOBY was nice and healthy. Within a few days I saw the kombucha fermenting and a new SCOBY forming. Directions on making the basic kombucha is included. For those new to making kombucha, there are lots of YouTube videos that take you through the process and share ideas for different flavors of kombucha that you can make at home. It’s really easy and super healthy! I have been making my own kombucha for several years, so I am not a newbie at this. This kit will get you started and from there you simply use your own kombucha and SCOBY to make additional batches of kombucha. In fact, if you treat your SCOBY right, you’ll end up making so many SCOBIES that you’ll give them away to friends and family so that they can make their own kombucha. Kombucha is delicious and homemade kombucha so much better than store bought kombucha! I drink kombucha instead of soda pop (kicked the soda pop habit when I started drinking healthy kombucha!).

Beautiful, strong, healthy scoby. Nicely and super securely packed. 2 cups ( !!!! ) of strong starter liquid! That is amazing and so very appreciated! It means a lot when you just starting to have a good "jump start". So many times other sellers send so little liquid with their scobies... and if the scoby is not the best/healthiest ( it happens )... Those few drops of liquid won't help much to "revive" it at least a bit so it starts doing what it's supposed to do. Been there, tried that. Didn't work. Money, time, and energy wasted. ( And I am not exactly a novice. Lived with kombucha my whole life. ( Even before it was mainstream. ;) ) ) Well, there's not much you can do if you get a dud, anyway, but - toss it.Well, no worries with this one, folks! The Kombucha Company makes sure you have good stuff, healthy stuff, and enough of everything to get you ( and keep you! ) going!
