Inspecting and Testing Faulty Ice Makers

Inspecting Faulty Ice Makers

Inspecting Faulty Ice Makers

Signs of a faulty Refrigerator Ice Maker can include:

  • No Ice Production | Small/Misshapen Ice Cubes | Frequent Ice Jamming | Leaks or Water Dispensing Issues | Noisy Operation | Ice Smells/Tastes Strange | Error Codes/Indicator Lights | Inconsistent Ice Production | Freezing Water in the Ice Maker
Testing Faulty Ice Makers

Testing Faulty Ice Makers

You can test your Refrigerator Ice Maker by:

  • Visual Inspection and Power Check | Water Supply Check | Ice Maker Functions | Thermostat and Heater | Ice Maker Module and Controls | Mechanical Components | Consult the Manual

Testing your Ice Maker explained:

1. Visual Inspection and Power Check - Visual Inspection: Start by visually inspecting the ice maker for any obvious signs of damage, leaks, or loose connections. | Power Check: Ensure the ice maker is properly plugged in and receiving power. Check the power cord and outlet for any issues. Use a multimeter to verify voltage at the ice maker’s electrical connections.

2. Water Supply Check - Water Supply: Confirm that the water supply line is connected and turned on. Disconnect the water line temporarily to check for water flow. | Water Inlet Valve: Test the water inlet valve using a multimeter to check for continuity. If the valve doesn’t have continuity, it may be defective and needs replacement.

3. Ice Maker Functions - Manual Test: Depending on the ice maker model, you may be able to manually initiate an ice-making cycle. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific instructions on how to do this. | Observe Operation: During the cycle, observe the ice maker to see if it fills with water, freezes ice cubes, and ejects them into the ice bin. Note any unusual sounds or movements that could indicate a problem.

4. Thermostat and Heater - Thermostat: Test the mold thermostat for continuity using a multimeter. Compare the readings with the manufacturer’s specifications. If the thermostat is faulty, it may not signal the ice maker to start producing ice. | Heater: Check the heater element for continuity and proper operation. The heater ensures that ice cubes release from the mold when ready. Replace it if it’s defective or damaged.

5. Ice Maker Module and Controls - Module Testing: The ice maker module controls the ice-making cycle’s timing and operations. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to test its functions, such as advancing the cycle manually. | Control Board: Some ice makers have a control board that manages various functions. Test it for proper voltage and functionality using a multimeter.

6. Mechanical Components - Gears and Motors: Inspect gears, motors, and switches for any visible signs of wear or damage. Ensure that all moving parts are functioning correctly without obstruction. | Manual Activation: Manually activate mechanical components to ensure they operate smoothly and perform their intended functions.

7. Consult the Manual and Manufacturer Support - Manual: Always refer to the ice maker’s manual for specific testing procedures and troubleshooting tips. | Manufacturer Support: Contact the manufacturer’s customer support or visit their website for additional assistance, especially if you encounter specific error codes or technical issues.

Bought this to replace the original ice-maker that came with the manufacturer (as it consistantly froze up, and eventually stopped working). Replacement was relatively simple, and fit exactly as the OEM. Making ice again and so far no freeze-ups!

The ice maker assembly was an updated version of the failed original unit. The sellers web page provided the new part number. I watched YouTube videos showing how to replace a couple of times. No problem replacing and the ice maker produces better ice than the original unit which failed. The original unit was freezing over and not producing ice. A video call with an expert who analyzed the original said the thermostat that controls ice production failed. Be sure to defrost the ice maker before attempting replacement following YouTube guidance on buttons to press to activate defrost.

This is after market ice maker and nothing wrong with that as long as one knowingly does that. My problem is this is expensive ice maker comparatively meaning I can buy the exact same ice maker of same quality at much cheaper price. I gave 3 stars because my issue so far is the price.

Our old icemaker was consistently frosting over and would stop making ice. We replaced it with this one and realized some of the parts were not metal. This has been a bonus for us as we think that is why the system failed us so often. Since replacing, which was not too difficult), we have not had any issues. In the past I had to defrost every few weeks. Really happy with the new unit.

Ice maker works fine, but the ice bucket that slides in beneath the ice maker initially did not fit. There is a small rectangular section on the bottom right front face of the ice maker that was initially too wide. This is the section of the ice maker that contains the ice level sensor. It was wider than the same section of the Samsung unit I removed. This ice maker's section is wider than a plastic diverter piece screwed into the ice bucket (guides the ice bucket into position). I ended up filing off the portion of the ice maker that was too wide in order to get the bucket to fit. My model number was RF23M8070SR/AA. DA97-13718C was the part number called for, superseding my original part number DA97-18859A.

Yet another underperforming chinese knockoff. Installed easily, and does make some ice. However not nearly as much as the original and most cubes are quite small or just pieces. I cannot recommend this product.

Not much of a reviewer, but given there are very few reviews for this non-OEM Samsung counter-depth ice maker replacement, I thought it might be helpful to anyone that may be considering this item. My initial review is 5 stars, I will update that accordingly if/as necessary over the coming months+.First, I have to say that we have had multiple Samsung appliances within the past decade (refrigerators, washers, dryers). We have moved, so and was not alway possible to take these items with us. Our experience has been that while they offer a lot of features, convenience and eye pleasing esthetics – generally, something breaks within a few years of service. While it is almost always replaceable by the owner, expect $100 or more to buy the needed part. We may not be Samsung customers next time around.About the aftermarket ice maker…The build seems to be of good quality and after removing the broken part, easily fit back into the intended spot. The only noted differences, are that the bottom portion of the OEM ice maker is made of metal, while this one is almost all plastic. Also, the wiring harness does not have a clip, it simply slides in (tightly). I’m not really sure either of these matter, nor do I expect that they will impact longevity of the unit. As shown in the picture, after a night of doing its thing, we again have ice. Hope it keeps working longer than the OEM part did, which only lasted 3 years. I agree with another reviewer that the bottom piece that swings up and down to allow clearance for the fridge mounted freezing tube was a little difficult to close upon installation. Don't force it, it will close if with just a little pressure (similar to what is required to pull down on the one being replaced), and you will be able to put the screw that hold it back in place.NOTE: if you are not careful in removing the old ice maker and installing the new one, you can potentially damage the entire refrigerator beyond repair. Please be sure to watch any of the numerous YouTube videos on how to make the switch. As mentioned, I’ll update my review from time to time to let folks know how the new ice maker is continuing to perform.
