This a a beast, as in, it's HEAVY!! Metal everything, which I like. Was able to cake up a whole skein of yarn. It's a bit fiddly with yarn tension and I had to hold the yarn. It worked fine out of the box and with a bit of finagling I was able to complete the caking process. It may do with some gear oil in the future. Be warned, if you have the one particular winder this one is COUNTER clockwise. Took a few turns for me to get that into my head! I'll updated this review at the end of next month to let you have a better Idea of how it works!!

well built and sturdy metal gears with TWO tensioners,,,,I absolutely love this winder and it has transformed my yarn storage!!!! the new skeins are not only more compact-- the working strand unwinds smoothly and the yarn cake does not roll around like the hand-rolled kind or tangle after being tossed about in my project bags.....i would give it at least 10 stars if I could!!!

I bought this to replace a much smaller plastic ball winder, and I'm in love. I took a chance since it was cheaper than other listings and had no reviews yet, but I'm very impressed. It has metal gears, which are quite loud, but the yarn guide attaches securely so it doesn't rattle or fall. It works great, very smooth action and very stable. Putting a piece of felt between the base and my table did reduce the noise somewhat. But you can't beat the value of a large yarn winder at this price.

I like that this is larger and can handle a whole skein of yarn unlike the smaller ones. It’s very heavy. Good metal gears. BUT, it is moody as hell. I had to oil everything to get it to turn. I had to tape down the yarn guide because it bounces everywhere. I can’t have the SLIGHTEST bit of tension on the yarn. And worst of all, I have to hold the yarn at a specific angle while simultaneously winding or the yarn guide and flyer get tangled up. I wonder if the flyer is just a bit too long or maybe the angle of the bobbin is just a bit off.
