Beyond being just a tool to practice brush techniques, especially for sumi-e styles, this scroll is an auspicious gift, sheathed in beautiful brocade and ready to hang. Many years ago I owned a letter-sized version of the same type where you write in water and the marks magically disappeared in minutes. That one was so small it was only big enough for a few characters or motifs. This one is about 4 times the size and has enough space for a whole poem or picture. It does take longer to dry, 15-25 minutes depending on the humidity and how wet your brushes are. A slower drying time is not necessarily a disadvantage, especially if you are demonstrating for students or letting them try out strokes before committing to ink and paper with another brush. It also gives you enough time to do the work and take a picture of it for the record. But you can always help your efforts dry more quickly with a hair dryer.This scroll won't be as helpful for Western style brushwork, especially with thicker paints like acrylics or oils. It won't help at all with highly textured strokes such as impastos. Western style brushwork is often based on an outline-and-color-in technique; Eastern style artwork usually relies on manipulating the brush so its' strokes form the whole motif--outline and fill-in--simultaneously.Of course, you can opt to use this with inks or watercolors but that's what your final paper is for, right?

I'm practicing calligraphy using brushes and this scroll is perfect for that. Let it dry after each session and it's ready to go for the next session. This makes practicing more fun and I don't have to worry about wasting paper! It's a very beautiful scroll and eventually when my skills are worthy I will likely make this my first ink piece 💜.
