Product Description

The Starrett 196 series universal dial indicator has a 0 to 0.2" measuring range with 0.001" graduations for precise measurement of the rise or drop in a work piece. It has a 0 to 100 counter with one revolution equivalent to 0.1", and the white-face dial has a scratch-resistant crystal face for ease of reading. The plunger on the back comes with 1/2", 5/16", and 1/8" diameter contact points. This kit has a 1/4" diameter stainless-steel shank for mounting. Some dial indicator sets include an adapter, a standard letter of certification, and clamp, tool post holder, snug, and hole attachments. It is suitable for applications such as quality control for machined parts. Dial indicators are also called dial gauges, probes, and electronic indicators. These precision instruments measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can be easily read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial test indicators are like dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Dial and dial test indicators can be analog with a mechanical dial, or electronic with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology, and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

This s the most rugged and durable dial indicators on the market. My other ones had been bouncing around in a toolbox for 15 years still operational. I just needed a new set.

Exceptionally smooth and sensitive motion. Quality accessories with fine finish and smooth action. It is so smooth that you can interpolate to about .00025" with some confidence. For the beginners, this set is the first set you need, if you need an indicator set. It is the most versatile single indicator. It can true parts in a lathe chuck, true a milling vise, true the angle of a mill spindle to its table or to a part, or with other accessories, can be used to build and true spoked wheels. With an inspection mirror, it can be used to center a spindle on a fair variety of holes..001" is good enough for anything a beginner might want to do, and good enough for most of what experts want to do. An advantage of that .001" resolution is the versatility that comes from a longer travel. This one has .2". Your .0001" indicators usually have about .03" of travel. (1/32") so whatever you are doing needs to be nearly right before you can even use them. How do you get them nearly right? With THIS one!

This helps immensely on machine setups where space is limited. I was always borrowing my coworkers sets until I finally pulled the trigger on this one. I couldn't be more satisfied with the convenience and versatility of this indicator set.
