About this item

  • Designed for Precision - The Starrett 385 Series Steel Straight Edit with Bevel Edge is precision ground and nicely finished to rigid Starrett standards. It provides users with accurate and consistent results.
  • Beveled One Edge - This tool is beveled on one edge but not graduated or has any mark of units for measurement. It is unexcelled for drawing or scribing straight lines and checking surfaces for straightness.
  • Easy to Use - The Starrett Steel Straight Edge thickness and design permit shape retention and accuracy. This tool is portable, easy to use and easy to handle.
  • Best Performance - The 380 and 385 Series in sizes 36" and longer are marked with arrows at two suspension points. If the straight edges are brought to the work and used on edge, they should be suspended at these two points to minimize deflection.
  • The Standard for Excellence - Proudly made in the USA, Starrett combines over 140 years of American heritage and innovation with globally sourced materials to deliver exceptional quality tools and products.

The Starrett 385 Series Steel Straight Edit with Bevel Edge is precision ground and nicely finished to rigid Starrett standards. It is unexcelled for drawing or scribing straight lines and checking surfaces for straightness. Its thickness and design permit it to retain shape and accuracy, but still be portable and easy to handle. The 380 and 385 Series in sizes 900mm (36") and longer is marked with arrows at two suspension points. If the straight edges are brought to the work and used on edge, they should be suspended at these two points to minimize deflection. Most jobs involve the use of straight edges in the flat position - and it is in this position that we check most stringently. 600mm (24").

Packaging left something to be desired, but other than that typical Starrett product. I don’t have a way to verify that this was as flat as they say but for what I need it for taking their word is good enough for me.

This precision instrument comes from the factory wrapped like a dollar hamburger. Hot Wheels are packaged better than this. I am sure this is a five star product at the Starrett factory, but by the time I received it (and apparently many others), it was worthless. I was aware that many people experienced packing problems, so I took care to order this from a distributor shown on Starrett's website, thinking perhaps consumer oriented businesses don't understand precision tools, but certainly an industrial supplier would. I was wrong. The box I received was punctured in the corner, clearly where this no-longer-straight-edge poked through and became dented. It was also visibly bowed. I put most of the blame on Starrett. Amazon is listed as an authorized distributor, as well as the company I purchased from. Starrett needs to control its distribution channels to ensure its products arrive to the customer as intended. This could involve agreements and training, but the easiest and most effective solution is for Starrett to simply package these straight edges from the factory in a plastic case, like calipers that sell for less, or even sturdy cardboard. The granola bars I buy come in better packaging than the brown paper of this expensive instrument! Assuming I received it as I should have, it looks like a great product for most automotive uses, and the beveled side is useful for checking flatness of areas with a narrow width. Realize that what you receive will be dependent on the care of your distributor (local or online), since Starrett has done nothing to ensure the safety of this product after it leaves the factory. I did not receive a straight edge, so I returned it.

The straight edge was heavily bent. Finish isn't great either, very rough and with many burrs on the ground edges. Very disappointing tool at an expensive price. First thing I bought from Starrett, I read they were good, but this is just rubbish.

This straight edge is a bit of a mixed bag for me. Upon opening it I checked to see that it was straight, laying it on edge on several precision machined flat surfaces in my shop. It is dead flat and accurate. My only disappointment is that the face surfaces are quite rough with deep sanding scratches. There were also noticeable burrs left on the ends which are sharp. The finish just doesn't seem up to par with the other Starrett tools I own, and that is something I expected to see nicer. Especially when you consider the price these go for. The packaging was also kind of pathetic, the piece was bound to a thin pine board with rubber bands and in a box that was way too big for it that lacked adequate padding.

It's steel and its straight. I Like it.

The original straight edge with Bevel that we have was an excellent product! I have no doubt it still is. However, I received a 24" metal ruler, not the 385-24 ordered. Beware if you order this that you may not get what you were hoping for.
