Purchased this tape over a year ago for my inspection kits. I bought this tape for the brand/name as I am a mechanical inspector and a millwright. Finally, after a year I am on a turbo/compressor installation checking foundation and anchor bolts, to find my measurements over 14m to differ all most 9mm. In a API compressor installation, this tape measure could have been a costly mistake if we did not do a comparison with other tape measures and survey reports. Now this tape is useless to me and will have to be very cautious when purchasing another one. Will have to send for calibration, to be checked immediately

The first unit one broke as I was reeling in the tape while doing lay out on the very first measurement which made for a very long ten hour shift. Contacted Amazon who sent another out to me quickly. No issues with the second unit. There is peace and harmony in my tool universe once again.

Bought as a replacement for one that was lost. The one we lost was pretty old and very well made. I'm impressed this one is just as well made and looks very similar.

As a young carpenter in 1986 I purchased a Craftsmen 50 ft. steel tape, in those days made in the USA. After 30 years if finally broke. Replaced it with this Starrett 50 ft. tape made in China. It lasted all of 7 days before the plastic pin that holds the handle on broke. A small pin that should have been made of steel, but had been downgraded to plastic to shave a few cents off the production cost and a fraction larger profit margin. Still desperate to make some measurements I used the tape as best I could with a broken handle. 3 days later the tape itself broke. So, I got 10 days use out of the tool.At 10 days use, to equal the lifespan of the Craftsmen tape I would have to purchase a total of 1,080 Chinese made Starrett tapes, at $28.77 each, at a cost of $31,071.60. The cheapest is not always the cheapest grasshopper.A quick search on Ebay turned up dozens of lightly used vintage US made 50 foot steel tapes, for about the same price as the 10 day disposable version. The lesson I take from this fiasco is to think a little more deeply about seemingly simple purchases, and how to tread a little lighter on the surface of our non-disposable planet.Ok, ok I am done.

I've been purchasing Starrett products for years. I had this same tape but with a satin chrome blade. Starrett is a leader in precision tools. I've prided myself in all of my Starrett purchases. I settled because I saw they discontinued the satin chrome blades for this baked enamel yellow blade. The real let down for me was to find this was made in China!!! Every Starrett tool I own was made in Athol, mass except this. I know most of their blades (hole saws, reciprocating sabre saw blades, etc) are now sub-contracted out to other countries but had no idea their tapes are now no longer made in the US. It doesn't even feel as heavy as my previous one (red case). Also the lines aren't as fine on the baked enamel blade as they were on the satin chrome one. These lines are about 1/32"(baked enamel) wide as opposed to 1/64"(satin chrome). I just hope it lasts as long as my old one did(15 years).

I am a welder, and I use this tape almost every day.Constant inches is the GREATEST for doing layout on big tanks, which is exactly what I use it for.And good luck finding it cheaper anywhere else... I showed my boss at work, and he immediately bought ten of them for our business.
