How does a 7-way trailer plug work?

How to test a 7-way trailer plug with multimeter?

  • To check the pins on the vehicle side 7-Way, you can use a circuit tester or the volt meter.
  • The circuit tester will show you if a signal is coming through on the pin you are testing while the volt meter will tell you that and how much voltage is being sent.
  • When you test the brake circuit pin on the 7-Way, it may be more beneficial to see how much voltage it is sending through.
  • More further assistance, please feel free to send us direct message if needed.

Towing Tip!

A bad ground connection is one of the most common causes for trailer wiring problems. A bad ground can show up as an overall lighting failure, even when the voltmeter says you have a charge. It can also create intermittent failure, causing your lights to flicker randomly. When mounting a ground wire, choose an existing factory ground connection where other ground wires are connected or use a bolt to mount the wire directly to your vehicle's chassis.

Note: Going with larger gauge wire (10 is usually the largest you will see for trailer wiring harnesses and connectors) can lead to a level of resistance that will cause some functions not to work properly.

Works as intended, but soft plastic that won't survive continuous use.If your vehicle power goes thru a relay that kicks out when this plug is connected, install a trailer control box with 12vdc from a 30A source.

I think the installation is easy, don't really know. Been too lazy to install it. Looks durable and it's been rattling around the bed of the truck for a month now and still looks OK. Good value for the money because the one at NAPA is more expensive so, naturally this is a good buy. I would buy again because I'm convinced that if I would have bought the one from NAPA I would have dearly overpaid. I'll update the review once I install it (probably won't since we already established that I was lazy.)... get you one!

Great product, must use fork stake-one to connect wiring for a solid installation. The yellow gromit was to thick to be used on my trailer cable. If it came with two different thickness gromits it would be a 5 star product.
