I bought this bit to use for fabricating floating shelves. I needed a flush cut bit for solid maple wood banding to go around the hollow plywood constructed shelves. This item fit the bill.Pros:-Combination upcut and downcut minimize tear-out, if not eliminate it completely-Comes with a nice hard plastic bit case-Coating seemed to minimize pitch build up-Aggressive cutting but leaves a nice smooth finishCons:-So sharp it can cut you when handling, be careful and take your time with it

The technology works very well. The up/down spiral design of this “compression bit” minimized chip on both surfaces of the workpiece. However, the target surface is left with a very rough surface where the opposing cuts meet. This is not optimal because this surface is near impossible to sand smooth. It’s actually a bit worse than the factory edge on plywood sheets.

I needed this for a project where I would be using templates on SYP 2x4 material on my router table. I was a little skeptical finding a bit in this size at the price, but thought I would give it a shot.I rough cut all the parts on my bandsaw, getting within about 3/32 of the line. The bit struggled to even take enough off the edge to get the bearing to the template. I was running it at about 12,000 rpm and keeping my feed rate down, so it should have been an easy job on softer material. I didn't want to put too much lateral pressure on it, but had to give some extra effort to get it to remove enough to ride the bearing. Even at the slower speed and feed rate, it burned the edge of the workpiece.Even with dust collection running on my router table, it looked like it was snowing in my shop. Not a fine dust, but large (over 1/8" length) sheared fibers floating about. I guess that shows it was shaving it off, but it was spewing it everywhere.I also noted that after the first use, the Astra coating faded in color pretty dramatically. I assumed it was just dust on the cutter head. But, after wiping it off, it was clear that wasn't the case. The only way I can account for that is that the coating was so thin it wore off almost instantly, or that the friction may have reduced the coating. Either way, the coating is supposed to reduce that kind of heat build up and minimize any potential burn.I'd like to say that all of this was due to inexperience. But I've been a woodworker for almost 40 years and have used templating and flush trim bits for a long time now. So the only conclusion I can unfortunately reach is that this bit simply isn't worth the money. Maybe I got a bad one, because the other reviews seem pretty positive. But this was my experience.

I've only used this bit a few times now but so far i am very impressed. It cuts well and leaves a very smooth finish behind and doesn't even need to be sanded. That said, the less material you need to flush trim, the easier it will go. This is a great option if you don't want to dish the big bucks on the premium astra coated bits from, you know, that premium router bit maker. If you know, then you know.

Compared to the Pattern Flush Trim Router bits this bit is far and away much better. Nice clean cuts, doesn’t grab the material and cause tear out and the material glides through without a lot of effort. Pattern bits on a router can be especially scary especially on large material. It cuts through pine 2x4 with relative ease.Dec 2024 review update: I used this bit to make two Adirondack rocking chairs. By the time I finished the second I could tell it was struggling to get a clean cut. The wood was pressure treated pine. Not sure this is unique for this type pattern but but this one dulls fairly quickly.

Title says it all. Best compression cut carbide bits on the market for the price.

Used the cut butcher block Acacia which is harder than birch or hickory. My straight bit wouldn’t start to cut. This bit cut with out burn just slow and steady both straight and on curves. Used on sink cutout and cutting the step for cabinet different. Used with 14 amp 2.5 hp Skil router

The compression bit is great for pattern routing. The 1/2" thickness is nice and rigid so it doesn't deflect on thicker stock like a 1/4" bit can. Definitely recommend this bit, great quality for the price. Seems like it will last a long time. The thicker bit also doesn't heat up like a smaller one does.

I bought this but because the other flush trim bit I had caused some very bad kick back (and got me pretty scared as well). Well, this bit cuts very well. I used it on 3/4 inch Baltic birch and I was very happy about it. No kick back at all!! Of course it burns the wood a little bit but nothing that can’t be sanded and if you make shallow passes, use good technique and take your time, you will have no issue. Plus, it’s way cheaper than the usual compression flush from bits. It’s not an industrial bit, but for hobbyist it’s perfect.

The up cut spiral bit helps to keep the debris away from the cutting area.

I'm making a curved cabinet where the top, bottom and a divider need a curved front. After making a template for the curve, then marking and rough cutting my mahogany pieces with a jigsaw, I used this bit with the template to cut the pieces to final shape. It was far easier than with my old straight trim bits - not far from the proverbial hot knife through butter and it was also easier to start the cut without getting any kickback. Better still, both top and bottom edges of the trimmed workpiece were very clean which was the point of getting a compression-style bit. (see photo - no finishing on the cut surface has been done yet, so this is right off the router table). It makes sense that these spiral cutters produce better cuts because they slice rather than chop and this bit really fulfilled my expectations. This solid carbide router bit may seem pricey, but I think it was worth it.

I was flushing out some post holes with pressure treated deck boards….went through like butter. Smooth finished and the bit barely took heat.
