I fell into making cabbage boards by chance, when my son-in-law loved the coasters, I laser engraved for him and asked about a cribbage board. We have a CNC machine that has a spindle, and I decided to give that a whirl to make one for him as a special present. Little did I know, the bit type and shape plays a huge role in the quality of the product as well as protecting your machine. I needed something that would work for pulling chips out of the cut, and not overheat and potentially cause a fire when drilling dozens of holes. This is a very nice bit and I could see it used in multiple applications, but the drilling of the holes in the cribbage board was my main purpose. It has definitely met and exceeded my expectations.

For background, I run a full sheet CNC, cutting primarily 3/4" maple plywood, MDF and HDF. I had been using high priced A***a end mills for my work and they are great, but very expensive and I found that MDF was hard on the coating which often led to shortened lifespans. When I started looking for more cost effective alternatives I tested a series of bits from SpeTool and I was immediately surprised at the cut quality and durability. Even thin 1/16" bits went the distance if I was mindful of going low and slow on my DOC and speeds.I've moved completely to SpeTools for my straight cut bits, and this was my first purchase of their coated bits. It's a big improvement in durability and friction reduction. These are my new go to bits! What I liked:1. SpeTool end mills are a great value, particularly the 5 packs.2. Coating markedly reduces friction and chatter.3. Longer shank adds cutting depth when needed and puts more of the shank in contact with my water cooled spindle which further cools the bit.4. Available in all sizes with a 1/4" shank. I don't have to change collets.5. All sizes are available in multiple cut types. I typically use uncut and compression cut bits in 1/4" and 1/8".What I wish:Please offer these bits in 5 packs!

First individual bit I’ve bought and it works great. Used it on some hard wood to carve out letters and it was clean and never really got hot

I use this bit for routering out for C channels on river tables. Have learned not to be too aggressive on depth so will make two passes. For example if targeting a one inch depth, will do a first pass of 1/2" then increase to one inch. Find the bit will heat up too much and leave a burnt coating on the bit.

I usually buy the cheap router bit sets, but wanted something that cuts cleaner and leaves a nice finished surface on top and bottom. This is an excellent quality compression bit. I’m very happy with the purchase, and the price is reasonable for the product delivered. Delivery was also very fast and efficient.

Used for 1/8” inlay in a Maple cutting board and it stayed sharp through over 16 feet of milling to a depth of 1/4” in a single pass.

I wish I would have had a better understanding of the difference between down cut bits and up cut bits. Up til now I have used down cut bits for everything. The bottom of all my previous cuts always looked unfinished. No more thanks to up cut bits! Nice and sharp. I’ve always had good results with bits from this company!

I didn’t need to make a deep groove, so it lasted a long time. Hard to find 1/16” and I was delighted to find this. My wood could chip easily, so I needed to sand the grooves, but I think that was more a function of my material than the bit.

Tried the bit a few times. It's fine, but it's nowhere close to Whiteside or others. The finish isn't all that great. Not even as nice as some bits from China for half the price. It'll do in a pinch, but better to save up for better bits.
