Frequently Asked Questions

1. The Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 is unable to be powered up by my mobile device.

  • When the battery level of your mobile device is too low, it may not be able to provide sufficient power to the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4. Do make sure that your mobile device is adequately charged before using it with the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4.

2. Is the SmartComms Kit and Creative app available for macOS, mobile devices, and gaming consoles?

  • The SmartComms Kit and Creative app are available for Windows platform (Ver 1703 and above) only.

3. Why does the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 sound louder on PC / Mac compared to Android devices?

  • PC has the capability to control both the media playback volume of the media player and USB audio volume of Sound Blaster PLAY! 4. Under most cases, the default media playback volume is always set to maximum on the media player software. On Android phones, you are only allowed to control the media playback volume and not the USB audio volume. Furthermore, the default media player volume is normally set to 50% or lower on most phones, thus it will sound softer compared to PC / Mac. For more power output, switch the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 to USB Mode 1, as detailed in following FAQs.

4. How do I know which USB Mode is my Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 in?

  • When powering on, the LED indicator on the EQ button will flash either blue or white to indicate the USB Mode that it's in:
    • USB Mode 1: The LED indicator will flash Blue 5 times
    • USB Mode 2: The LED indicator will flash White 5 times (Do note that the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 is set to USB Mode 2 by default)

5. What are the differences between USB Mode 1 and USB Mode 2? What are the recommended modes?

  • USB Mode 1 is best suited for gaming consoles such as PS4, PS5, and mobile devices, and supports playback resolution of up to 24-bit / 96 kHz. USB Mode 2 is recommended for Windows and Mac systems and supports playback resolution of up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. We also recommend using USB Mode 2 if your intended primary platform for the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 is PC or Mac, and using USB Mode 1 if your intended primary platform is on gaming consoles and mobile devices.

6. How do I switch between USB Mode 1 and 2? Will the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 remember the USB Mode after I've set it?

  • While connected and powered on by a device, switch between USB Mode 1 and 2 via the following steps:
    • Press and hold the EQ button for approximately 2 seconds
    • When the LED indicator on the EQ button flashes Blue 5 times, the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 is set to USB Mode 1
    • To set the device into USB Mode 2, press and hold the EQ button for approximately 2 seconds. When the LED indicator on the EQ button flashes White 5 times, the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 is set to USB Mode 2
  • Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 will remember the last USB Mode that it has been set to, i.e. if the device is set to USB Mode 2, it will remain in USB Mode 2.

7. My Windows PC is unable detect the Sound Blaster PLAY! 4, why is that so?

  • Do make sure that your Windows 10 version is updated (Ver 1703 and above).

8. My audio sounds distorted when I play videos and music on my laptop.

  • Ensure that NoiseClean is only switched on during online calls. NoiseClean may interfere with normal media playback (e.g., music and movies) and we recommend for the feature to be switched off for the best audio experience.

9. I am unable to record audio from Sound Blaster PLAY! 4 in video recording mode on Android devices.

  • Android devices can only record audio from its built-in microphone during video recording, and this limitation applies to all third-party USB audio products.

I like its small size. Sound quality is better than laptop audio. Overall I have a better video call experience with it.

I've bought this 3 times now, none of which were cause by issues with the device but because it's just that good. My dog teethed on the first one so I bought a second (and was careful to not leave it plugged into my Mac) and I bought the third for my WFH setup.Audio quality is great with this USB C DAC. First of all, its plug n play on every OS I've tried it on (which is Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, MacOS, and Windows 11 Pro) and I haven't had any issues using it on those platforms. The optional Creative software adds some cool features and a control panel for the DAC, but it's optional and isn't required if you don't want yet another background process running.I've used this with a variety of headsets and headphones (namely, Audio Technics over ear headphones and Apple EarPods) and the audio quality is a noticeable improvement over the onboard audio for my PCs. I like the DAC has an on device mute button too.Overall, not too much to say other than I recommend this DAC if you need an affordable option that also sounds good. 5/5!

This works great as designed, and is basically plug and play. While the difference in sound quality is probably negligible for most PC applications compared to on-board sound, it does add a couple convenience features such as the hardware "mute" button and ability to use some of Creative's noise cancelling and EQ features. I personally don't use these as most video calling software now has much of this built in, but I found that it works great as a "dongle" for using wired headphones with the newest USB-C iPhones. This allows you to plug into a wired hi-fi or PA system, or use wired headphones for higher sound quality or as a backup to wireless headphones where battery life is a limitation.

I got the Creative Sound Blaster PLAY! 4.It is very buggy. It has a mind of its own. Sometimes it just disconnects itself. Have to unplug it and move it to a different port. Was running it at the max 24-Bit 192KHz for a while, but now, anything beyond 48Khz sounds garbled and just unbearable. It is good for a bit of a nice boost to sound but do not expect this to give you a leg up in gaming or anything. The sound quality is just a bit better than the stock Realtek HD Audio. And yes I have tried disabling the inputs. Tried modifying everything else. But cannot get the max sound I am supposed to.Of course this is not a replacement for a real sound card or an actual DAC.I would honestly skip it, save more money and maybe consider the FiiO K3 Type-C USB DAC. The FiiO has optical out and my desktop speakers have optical in so it should provide better quality sound. I will be purchasing that and keeping this for maybe using it on my iPad Pro or maybe give it to my nephews so he can use it on his PS4.** Update 13 August, 2022 **I think I finally managed to get it work the way it should. For whatever reason, "Mode 2" is the mode that is required for Windows and Mac devices. Even though it states it in the manual that "Mode 2" is the default, mine was not working as it should. For mobile devices and gaming consoles, "Mode 1" is required. If you try to use Mode 2 on your gaming console or mobile device it may not be detected or might not work as expected..These are my settings on a Windows 10 machine and iMac 5K in order to get the popping and random disconnections to stop.1. Install the "Creative App" software. That is what it is called. Honestly.2. Update the firmware and drivers.3. Enter "Mode 2" on your device. You do this by holding down the "Volume Down" (has a CIRCLE) button for about 2-3 seconds. Once it is enabled, you will see a blinking white light. It will blink 5 times in white.4. Mute the microphone on the device by pressing the mute button one time. A red light will appear above the button.5. In Windows 10, go to Control Panel > Sound > "Recording" tab > Right click on "Microphone - Sound Blaster Play! 4" and select "Disable".6. In Windows 10, go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Expand "Sound, video and game controllers" > Disable the following if you have it and will not be using it:"Intel Smart Sound Technology for USB Audio"; "Intel Smart Sound Technology for Bluetooth Audio"; "HD Audio Driver for Display Audio". 7. In the "Creative App" and make sure that you lower down the microphone volume for the "Play! 4" device.8. In the "Creative App" > Select Playback > Audio Quality > Headphones > Select "24 bit, 192000 Hz".

Instead of purchasing a PCIe sound card for a desktop computer, I decided to try this on my older Dell Precision notebook (with Windows 10 Installed) - I saved lots of space on my desk. It is a night & day improvement from integrated audio. The sound quality is as impressive as other premium desktop sound cards I used. It comes with a USB-C to USB type A (traditional rectangle port) adapter and can be used on a USB 2.0 port. This is a plug&play device for Windows, meaning there is no headache with software installation and configuration (other than the possible switching the sound devices on Windows Options). There is an app for this device, but I have not bothered to use it because it works without any issues whatsoever.I am currently using Samsung's earphones with mic and control buttons; I can pause & play music and change the volume on Windows 10 using my earphones through this excellent gadget.Using this on my Samsung Galaxy S9 works excellent and the buttons do work, albeit with lower volume than the original headphone jack, but still can be increased enough for me to enjoy. If you do not plan to use surround sound, then this is an excellent upgrade that is easily transferrable to other computers and smartphones.

Originally I bought this tiny DAC to improve PS4 sound output and IT DID significantly!!**BEWARE**, you need PC (Windows 10/11 only, Mac is not supported) to install creative app and update its firmware to get full benefits it offers. Here is my story, when I received the product I immediately plug it into my PS4 to test it following instruction. The actual sound coming from my headset was REALLY LOW, actually lower than original. So I unplugged it and then went to my PC to update its firmware. I downloaded the firmware and installed it accordingly. I thought this should do the trick, NOOO it did not. When I plugged it back to PS4, it was acting weird by disconnecting itself and blinking. I surely thought I BRICKED it.I wend back to PC again and this time, I downloaded & installed "Creative App for Windows". The creative app immediately recognized my device after unplugging/plugging and there was a setting for update its firmware. I did the update process again through app and I tested it on my PC for sounds and noise cancelling features. I did end up NOT using noise cancelling features since it seems these settings distort sound output on my headset, but overall sound quality was better than the original. Then finally I went back in to test with PS4, it WORKED!! New volume control, EQ, muting button, and everything worked well. The new volume control which comes with a new firmware is A MUST HAVE for making PS4's ouput as loud as possible. I'm pretty sure it will work on PS5 as well when I finally get ONE!
