Nicely machined, beautiful design. Have bought many of these 3, 5 7, 9, weights. Drag is fine. It's just there to hold the line, so why waste money. Not sure about this reel for salt water, but, if you wash the line and reel after fishing it should be fine.

Terrible design. Didn’t need much, just a simple fly reel with a drag for trolling a sinking fly line. Worked until reeling in my first fish. The act of reeling loosens the bolt that holds on the spool. If you tighten it, then the drag is too tight. Tried to make adjustments and still use, but inevitably the spool falls off in the middle of fighting the fish, or if tightened, then the fish can’t take line even with a completely loose drag. Absolute piece of junk. I hate people that review products before using them.

This Chinese fly reel is ridiculously good value for money. It is machined and anodised aluminium. The quality is comparable with reels costing 6 times as much. Manufacturing tolerances are very close. No slop at all. Very pleasing on the eye.

CNC cut Stainless with close tolerances and a smooth drag and great fee spooling for fast line gain.Feel confident on this choice. I have 2 of these Sug Casting reels that are over 6 years old and they are spectacular and ball bearing smooth with hard use.

I own a $350 Hardy Reel and it's clear they reverse engineered this reel from a Hardy. I bought it to replace a 25 year old small arbor reel from Lamson for my eight weight rod that I rarely use and did not want to spend $300+ for a name brand. It looks fabulous, the drag seems smooth and the finish is excellent. I only have two complaints that keep me from giving it a 5 star rating. the handle has a little up down play and it does not click while retrieving. It does click while stripping or fighting a large fish that pulls line however.I read a one star review that said the drag does not work and it free spools. They clearly did not flip the bearing clutch to change the retrieve hand but as stated above the directions are not accurate on how that'd done.

I first purchased the larger of these reels. I was impressed with the quality for the price. I am a lefty, so when I got the large reel I needed to swap it over to right hand retrieve(left hand holding the rod). It only took me about 13-20 minutes to successfully accomplish that. NOW, at the time I did the change, I had consumed 3 stout "old-fashioned" tumblers of good Canadian whiskey. Nonetheless, things went oh-so smoothly. No tiny parts left airborne and the bushings and drag washers all reversed and behaved nicely. When I received the smaller reel, this item, I had consumed no whiskey, but so far , even with the large reel for guidance, I have been unable to do the changeover. (Note: I was then and still am without whiskey; that may be the issue, but I doubt it.) There are differences in thedesign of the two reels. On the large one I did not have to deal with flying spring loaded tiny pins and two small unsprung pins. This companyneeds to make instructions available for hand-dominant change. I have not yet given up; I will go out and buy another 1.75 l. bottle ofSeagram's VO and see if that helps. Well, the VO did not help but the seller did HELP. They contacted me and are now sending a replacement. I am a bit stunned ( not by the whiskey) since it is my fault that I made the mistake. As further comment, the machining and function on both reels I bought was excellent and tolerances tight. I have three high quality bamboo flyrods and the large reel is for my spey, an antique Winchester sold premium bamboo (10') and two exceptionally high quality new bamboo rods. The small reel is for my 7 foot 4 weight line rod. Then I have an 8' 6" that already has a fine reel from "Headwaters." NOTE: I do not think the Seagram's hurt; it probably helped to keep my temper steady as I swapped the large and now serves as a "toast" to the seller. The seller is extraordinary. They also sent me a photo that clearly shows how simple the change is. I hope they provide it to Amazon..Thus, I have raised my rating to 5 star. EDIT, Positive; this company came through on the replacement within about 4-5 days for delivery. I had no trouble changing retrieve side, especially easy and now I know this is common in a full range of reels-even in the big bucks brands. Out of a sense of appreciation and honor, I wrote to seller and offered to return the reel I had messed up . I received a prompt and kindly response that I could keep the reel I improperly assembled. This, even though I was willing to pay the return postage. Add a 6th star for their customer service !!! PS- I now know how to correct the problem I made for myself. If anyone else tries to completely dissassemble the drag system-- DON'T-- there are three solid pins in there that hold the rotation of one of the drag discs and it is now obvious that these three pins should drop into their respective holes to do their job. Aligning the drag discs and all three pins causes them to drop down flush (these 3 are separate from the spring loaded clicker pin) . The washer set, inboard, is very hard to manipulate to realign the washer holes with the plain pins. I have spent my avocation in sophisticated mechanical work and I blew it.

If you don't try to compare it with a fly reel five times the price, I believe you get a tremendous amount of quality for under $40. I really don't think you can find anything better in this price range. It's got a very nice but not quite perfect finish with a minimal amount of machine marks in the finish. It's not on par with many $200 fly reels but then again consider the low price. It has a VERY slight amount of play in the spool but almost imperceptible. The anti-reverse is not totally instant but pretty close and better than you should expect for a reel in this price range. It does click rather softly when you are puling line off or the drag is being pulled but on retrieve it is totally silent making it a great choice for me. I detest the clicking noise when retrieving line or a fish on reels that have it. Reels that do this are a deal breaker for me. They always have been and always will be. Fishing is supposed to help your tranquility and there is nothing tranquil about an annoying clicking sound. Is it on par with the best out there? Of course not but if you have realistic expectations for a reel priced this low you should be very happy with it. I got the 5/6 size and it is fairly wide. I wish this was available in a smaller size but 5/6 is the smallest available at this time. If they make this available in a smaller size I would most certainly buy one.
