What is soil pH?

Soil pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity (alkalinity) of a soil. Soil pH is considered a master variable in soils as it affects many chemical processes. It specifically affects plant nutrient availability by controlling the chemical forms of the different nutrients and influencing the chemical reactions they undergo. The optimum pH range for most plants is between 5.5 and 7.5.

The Impact of Soil pH on Soil Microorganisms:

Soil pH plays a pivotal role in influencing the types and abundance of soil microorganisms. In acidic soils, certain acidophilic microorganisms thrive, whereas in alkaline soils, alkaliphilic microorganisms become more prominent. The diversity and quantity of these microorganisms significantly affect the transformation and supply of soil nutrients, consequently influencing the growth and development of plants.

5

Soil pH Affects Plant Nutrient Absorption:

In acidic soils, some mineral elements such as phosphorus and iron may become unavailable, while in alkaline soils, certain trace elements like magnesium and calcium might become less accessible. Therefore, maintaining an appropriate pH level is crucial to ensure plants achieve a balanced absorption of various nutritional elements.

6

Soil pH Influences Plant Root Development:

In acidic soils, plant roots may be susceptible to aluminum toxicity, while in alkaline soils, the absorption capacity of roots may decrease. Thus, maintaining an optimal pH level promotes the healthy growth of roots and enhances the plant's resistance to environmental stressors.

1

Step 1: Collect a representative soil sample

Use a garden spade to dig a small hole (approximately 15 cm deep) and gather the soil sample from around the hole. Place this sample in a container. Repeat this process three times or more across your garden site. Thoroughly mix these soil samples and remove any stones, grass, etc.

2

Step 2: Prepare soil-water solution

Putting the mixed soil sample into centrifuge tube, to 20ml scale, add distilled water (or purified / pure water, not mineral water) until the liquid level reaches 40ml scale. Close the lid of centrifuge tube, then shake the tube 30 seconds, make the soil sample & distilled water(or purified / pure water, not mineral water) mixing well. Set aside and let stand for 30-60 minutes, or longer, until the supernatant (soil water solution) is obtained.

3

Step 3: Use the pH test strips

Place 1-2 pieces of pH test strips flat, draw up a small amount of soil-water solution using a dropper, and dispense one drop on each color pad of the pH test strip. Allow approximately 2-4 minutes for the pH test strip to fully react with the soil-water solution.

4

Step 4: Match color pads to color chart

Depending on the soil pH, one or two color pads will undergo a color change. Compare the resulting color(s) with the color chart provided with the pH test strips to determine the pH value of your soil.

Saw a lot of mixed reviews but took a chance on this kit.The reality is that you are trying to measure something quite sensitive and this is science not a cooking recipe. If you take care with the preparation it works fine so for me I got accurate results thus good value. The kit contains everything you need so easy to use.

Zero stars.. This stuff is a joke.. Youโ€™re better off with a pen that measures ppm and pH, I Made a slurry of all my pots soil in different containers, and every single one read the sameโ€ฆ There is no change in color at all, and I even tested it to make sure because I added some citric acid into some water and tested that. Nope. Same exact color. .. Iโ€™ve had ones that sort of work and then Iโ€™ve had these that are just a scam lol

I like this test kit a lot. It is super easy and fast to use. I have to test the soil around my blueberries nearly every day to keep it in the target PH zone. This kit makes it a breeze.

I selected this particular kit for a couple of reasons. First, the pH range is ideal for many uses. Soil testing is one such use. The pH range is 4.5 to 9.0. For soil testing, as with other uses, if the pH is outside of this range you really only need to know that it is much too acidic or much too alkaline. As such, the narrow range is better because you get better resolution and accuracy within the range that matters. The second reason is that the strips have two color blocks. To my way of thinking this is ideal. A single color block is okay but two color blocks are better for more accurate comparison. I don't think you need more than two, and if there are more than two, this is likely to be confusing. I was able to accurately read pH within this range with error less than +/- .25 pH. For soil testing and for many other purposes, this is as much accuracy as you need.Note that ultimately, the only part of this kit that is essential is the strips. You can use any small jar with a lid, and you can order more of the pipettes on Amazon from various sellers, in any quantity. It is nevertheless handy to have the three plastic containers and the six pipettes. To get these conveniences in addition to the 200 text strips, for $14, is just icing on the cake.Bottom line, skip the silly electronic meter, because it isn't going to work nearly as well. In order to get consistent, reasonably accurate measurements from the meter, you are going to have to collect soil samples and put it in a jar with neutral water, the same as with these strips. You will not get useful measurements by just sticking the probe in the ground. And since you are going to have to take samples and put them in jars along with neutral water regardless, why not go the route that is more accurate and less costly? Those meters just don't make sense. They don't work as well, and they cost more money.By the way, you need to prepare a container of neutral water to add to the soil that you put in the small jars. You do that using the strips to learn the pH of your tap water. No reason to buy distilled water, and distilled water might not be neutral anyway. If your tap water is acidic (pH below 7.0) add a little bit of baking soda, starting with a very small pinch. If your tap water is basic (alkaline), you can use vinegar or diluted lemon juice. You can also use some of that stuff they sell at the grocery store that is sold as lemonade, in a dry powder form that you add to water. (Every one of those products that I've ever tasted did not taste anything like lemonade to me, but it is acidic, and it you happen to have any it that you didn't use because of the terrible taste of the stuff, you can use it to prepare neutral water if your tap water is alkaline.)

I followed instructions carefully and tested the PH Balance of four different raised garden beds. The results were so dramatically different than a test done a few months ago I decided to test again using a different test kit. Those numbers were very similar to other tests so my conclusion is that this test kit gives inaccurate readings.

I have used this pH testing kit three times, one week apart, to test the same garden soil. I followed the directions exactly, using distilled water and letting the soil and water mixture sit in the tube for 45 minutes each time.Pro: the pH level results were the same each time and matching to the colors on the container holding the test strips was simpleCon: I used two color test strips each time and in all three cases, there was color change on only one of the two strips. Granted, the instructions suggest using one or two strips, but I am surprised that each time, only one strip exhibited color change.Overall, for ease of use I am satisfied and rate this product with 3* (It's Okay) but I can't help being a bit suspicious of the quality of the test strips.
