A friend lent me her copy of this delightful flip-page book. I was so delighted to find it on Amazon before I had to return it to her (she moved away) . This book contains many variations of the three main parts of socks, and the flip pages at the back allow you to design your own pair! I also like that it includes instructions for knitting socks with 2 circular needles; on the other hand I wish the pattern I chose had also had a note if you chose a set of double points. But, my socks look amazing! I tried a new kind of heel, and a new stitch for the ribbing - Fun!

Socks a la Carte Colorwork is a very nice addition to my sock knitting library. It contains sections on cuff patterns, body patterns and foot patterns. It has good suggestions on how to make socks that fit but this is not an instructional book. Rather, it contains flip charts so that you can mix and match toes, cuffs and bodies and pick out the exact sock that you want. All of it is in nice color and the idea is great. The final section of the book is the Gallery and there there are 22 pairs of socks that they made, listing the various cuffs, bodies and feet that went into each pair. The book provides some general knitting information and standard knitting abbreviations along with resources for their favorite yarns, needles, knitting bag, notions, and sock blocker. There is a list of websites they like and I was happy to see that Ravelry.com was included. There is even a list of sock knitting support groups on the web along with Ravelry forums that deal with socks. All in all, this is a great idea book with good inspiration and lovely patterns.

I love the ideas and instructions in the book but the samples are done in the same red marled yarn as the leg portion on the cover which makes them difficult to clearly discern the details. If I were not a fairly good pattern reader I would have real trouble with the samples. But I do love the patterns and the pocket leg is just the cutest!

I have to admit that I only plan on using this book in order to make different kinds of cuffs for my socks, but I've never seen a book that shows anything other than just a plain ribbed cuff and the cuffs in this book are great. They vary from intricate to simple stitch patterns and will really add a nice touch to the plain stockinette stitch socks I love knitting. If you are more adventurous than I am you'll love this book too because there are many different patterns for the whole leg of the sock, plus many different heels. A very unique book to add to your knitting library.

I love socks! I love knitting socks! I have MANY sock books! I am also not so brave in doing patterns. This book of "how to" has given me courage! Though the patterns are generally explained for circular needles, once I made the mental change to double pointed needles, it was so easy to take one ribbing, do another pattern for the leg, and do another for the foot(or leave it plain). I can flip through pages and choose the look I want, and then flip to those pages with the directions for those particular patterns. Seeing what the sock is going to look like is a thrill! There are numerous patterns to choose from and the patterns are easy to follow and well-explained. I even learned a new heel! This book is an adventure, and one with wonderful results! I highly recommend it for sock knitters of all levels!

This is the best of all the sock knitting books released in 2008. In fact, of the socks books out there, this is rivaled only by the Sensational Knitted Socks books. The gang at SWTC shows us both their creativity and their abiding respect for their customers by putting together a book that is fun to use, easy to read, and contains just the right amount of information without making you feel overwelmed with options. The actual design of the book is outstanding. It is hard-bound, so it is study enough to hang out in your knitting bag. One part of the book is "flip" pages that allow you to mix-and-match cuffs, leg, and heel-toe combinations. The book comes with an elastic strap that can be used to mark you page, or to hold down the flip-pages. As an aging baby boomer, I appreciate that the size of the pictures and the text. The book contains a nice variety of cuffs, and a great selection of heel-toe combinations. There are 20 leg/body patterns again with a variety of patterns and skill levels. There is something here for everyone. The instructions included are sufficient, but I don't know if I would recommend this as your only book for sock knitting. This is more of an overview. I did love the discussion on needles, because there is a very simple, straight-forward and easy to understand comparison of double-points and circulars for sock knitting. I always wanted to try knitting socks on 2 circulars, and I finally have the information I need to do that. Yipee!I highly recommend this book to all my sock knitting sisters (and brothers), even those who never thought they could design their own socks. Have fun!
