signs of digestive upset in rabbits, better rabbit poop

Tip 1: Warning signs of digestive upset and the risk of stasis

Digestive health, G.I. tract motility, energy and appetite are all closely related to each other. If one declines then the others will decline too.

feeding greens increases the signs of digestive upset

Tip 2: Feeding greens will increase signs of digestive upset

Feeding even a small amount of greens to a 6 pound rabbit caused these signs of digestive upset to appear within a few days and it took over a week of not feeding any greens to fix it.

rabbit hay, food and treats, digestive health, urinary health, best pellets

Tip 3: Encourage your pet to eat more hay and drink more water

by feeding less of these items:

  • Feed less salads, greens, veggies, and fruits.
  • Feed less grain and soy found in most pellets and treats.

These food items are sweeter than hay and increase digestive and urinary health problems.

When your pet eats more dry hay they will drink a lot more water!

most timothy pellets contain more grain and soy than hay

Tip 4: If hay is the first ingredient is the formula mostly hay? No!

Grain and soy, in multiple forms, is often hidden in pellets that have hay as the first ingredient.

These pellets are usually less than 35% hay! Treats also hide grain by having multiple types of grain listed after hay.

Feed Sherwood's hay based formulas that are grain free and soy free.

rabbit food, hay, grain free, soy free

Tip 5: Feed real hay and no substitutes!

Sherwood's formulas contain real hay and don't use low-cost ingredients, like soybean hulls, as a alternative to using real hay.

  • hay based formulas - no cheap fillers like soybean hulls
  • grain free
  • soy free
  • science based - formulated by PhD Molecular Biologist

Tip 6: After changing the diet...

then determine if your pet still needs some extra help that the digestive tablet provides. Many pets do need the extra help to stimulate motility after changing their diet because:

  • genetic motility issues (like megacolon)
  • older age and lower physical activity
  • previous or on-going risk for stasis

Saw improvement in digestion within 24 hours. One of my bunnies likes the taste and will eat it up, no problem. For the bunny who doesn't care for the tase of the pill, I have mashed the pill up and made it into a paste and put it on a few greens or put it in a oral syringe. The instructions says to avoid greens but MY bunny seemed to be okay with just a few stems of cilantro covered in the medication (it was really the only way bunny would take it). Its a good price will buy again.

I purchased these to give to one of my elder bunnies during heavy shed times. She loves them and comes looking for her "treat" every morning and evening. I trust Sherwood to provide my bunnies with healthy and high quality products.

We have been using this product for our rabbit for quite some time now with very good results. I just discovered this morning as I was getting down lower in the bag that about ten of these tablet in my latest order are crushed to powder. Was this Amazon mishandling or the merchant? I do not know but this product is expensive and loosing 10 tablets our of an order is costly. Cynthia Myers

We have been giving my stasis-prone bun two of these a day for several weeks with no GI stasis episodes so far -- previously, it was happening every 1-2 months. We thought it was from too much fur ingestion. I'm posting this advice because reality it was that he was eating too many pellets and veggies. If your rabbit is prone to stasis, I just wanted to share this info: CUT DOWN OR REMOVE GREENS FROM THE DIET ENTIRELY TO ENCOURAGE THE 80% HAY DIET!!! You can also reduce pellets and go for high fiber Timothy based pellets. Now that we've put him on a "diet" and he's eating more hay, he's been healthier than ever. Also, I recommend going to SmallPetSelect online store. They recommend 1st or 2nd cut timothy hay for more fiber. We got the 2nd cut timothy hay from SPS, and the buns love that. It's the right balance between being tasty and stemmy/fibrous. We also mix in different types of hay (like oat and orchard) to keep the buns interested in eating hay and that has been very effective!!!!ALSO, CHECK OUT THEIR "Premium ultra-soft" timothy hay which is a 3rd cutting highly nutritious (and high in fat, beware) hay that is SUPER delicious. The buns are obsessed with it and we give as a treat hay.Tl;dr I would recommend getting 2nd cut timothy as your main hay -- oat and orchard to mix to encourage hay eating, and THIS premium hay as a treat hay or the only hay, as a last resort if it's all your bun will eat. BUT THEY TRULY MUST BE EATING 70-80% HAY TO NOT GO INTO STASIS IF THEY ARE PRONE!!!! Good luck

My rabbit came from a shelter as an adult with a questionable past. He tends to be very picky and often refuses to eat foods that he's never tried before including the occasional piece of fruit. I feed my rabbit Sherwood's Professional Rabbit Food and really trust their quality brand. I decided to buy these digestive treats in order to avoid wool blockage after realizing he was ingesting a lot of fur. I was very disappointed to find out that he refused to eat them, but I persisted knowing how good they would be for him. I even bought another brand of papaya enzyme treats, which he loved, but after taking a taste myself, I realized it was because they tasted like pure sugar! I decided to coat his Sherwood treats with the dust of the sweet treats to fool him. Turns out it worked! And slowly but surely he became accustomed to the flavor and he even now begs for his treats twice a day! The treats have definitely helped his wool blockage as I see less strung-together poo, he has not had any digestive issues since. I especially love that I can feel good about giving him a treat that is not chock full of unhealthy ingredients and sugar. Thanks so much Sherwood! Keep it up!

I'm a first time rabbit owner, had my little Gambit for little over a year, and I tend to worry over his health. He never had any big health problems, but I read too many stories where a rabbit has a small health issue that quickly lead to its death to take chances.Since digestive problems is pretty common in rabbits, I thought I could give him something to help his digestive system to prevent problems. Found this for and good price and thought I would give it a shot. When I first offered it to Gambit, he was a little hesitate to trying it (which is common for him trying any new foods). When he did, he loved it.So I began giving him these once a day to him as a treat. So far he hasn't had any digestive trouble. It could be thanks to this item, my paranoid rabbit mama nature, or a mix of both.
