I bought this rod from a local fly shop after my $400 Scott SAS was smashed by a gust of wind slamming it in the door. I took the Scott to the fly shop for repair under its lifetime warranty, and bought the six weight version of this rod to continue fishing. (I had wanted a five weight but none was available). I fished with it using the five weight line from my Scott, and even though the rod felt as light in my hand as a five weight, I could tell it needed a six weight line to load properly. I now fish it with a six weight line and it has become my goto rod for local fishing (which means I leave a much more expensive Scott Radian and Hardy 5 weight rod at home). When you have fly fished for 36 years like I have you learn that almost all fly rods will cast well, but they do have their own personality and you soon figure out which rods you want to spend a day casting. I tend to have a punchy load and need a stiffer rod that doesn’t collapse (I can still cast with a full flexing rod but have to slow down and load more smoothly). Expensive rods are worth the money, but the reasons are subtle, and I definitely can cast as far and as well with this rod as with any of the more expensive rods I own. And when I’m fishing at the local ponds I can throw it in the back of my truck without worries. That original Cedar Canyon rod eventually had its own broken tip, so I bought another (and now have three spare sections if another break occurs). In fact, I’ve bought (from Amazon) the five weight version of this rod (to soft for my taste, I prefer the six weight) another six weight (to use with a sinking line) and the eight and nine weight versions that I use on the rare occasions I get to target really big fish. An excellent rod and a great value!
