Previously I had last terminated network cable back in 2007 or so, but I bought this kit to upgrade a network over the last couple months, and it has worked pretty well, especially given the price point. The continuity tester is pretty cheaply made (there's some loose plastic inside of it, which you can see through the lights, and it's kinda hard to removed cables from it), but.. it worked pretty well for a little bit and helped me identify a number of issues with existing cabling in the walls and identifying which unlabeled cable is which, as well as finding some wires with wacky termination patterns. One of the lights on the tester stopped working after a few months, however. The only real couple issues I found in using this kit are that the male-end crimp-tool and the punchdown tool do not cut off wires in pass-through connectors or keystones, respectively, and there's nothing else in the kit that can make those kinds of necessary cuts for you. Additionally, most modern wire (category 6 or higher, sometimes 5e too) come with a spline/plastic separator in the middle to separate the cable's pairs, and there's nothing to cut that, either. If they had included a little snip of some sort, it would have been perfect, but you will need to find something to use for that. The only other real issue is that the stripping tools are... at least for me, difficult to use without damaging the wires under the sheath. It can be done with practice (and did cause me some problems where I had to re-do my cuts a couple times), but again, for the price, not unreasonable.Lastly, the case itself is actually pretty nice, and I'll be honest, is one of the big reasons I chose this kit. (I like to have everything in one place, and organized, so I don't need to think too hard about what I need for a project; just grab the case and go!) That said, it doesn't have any internal labeling, there isn't really a spot for the documentation/directions that come with it for the various tools and cable layout options, and it's easy to forget where things go, but, if you remove the male cable ends, you could even sub in a couple other needed tools. Overall, I really can't complain much since it's served me very well for the cost, but I am a bit annoyed about the tester failing so quickly.

I got this for a networking project where I ran 40+ RJ45 drops.Let me break down what I used and didn't use.Tester: Used for RJ45. Worked great. The only thing I wish it did was automatically switch ports at the patch panel so I didn't have to run back and forth so much. :D But this was the main reason for getting this kit. I wanted a tester that would work well to make sure I wired everything correctly. It was a success.Crimper: Used for one cable. It worked. No complaints, but that was only one cable.Terminals: These are mostly metal. Very sturdy. Other than crimping them and testing them, they seemed to work fine. I used the cable for testing each drop.Yellow wire stripper. Worked great. It did not cut a single wire inside the cover. The depth of the cuts was perfect.Zipties. These were a little weak. I used almost all of them, but if you pulled hard on them, they'd break. Not sure how long they'll survive in the ceiling/walls if they have anything get caught on them.I didn't use any of the other components of this kit, so I can't rate anything else. I had another punch tool and this was going to be the backup, but my main punch tool was great, so I didn't need it.

A great product and a fantastic value. I just moved into a newly constructed house. There are 8 Cat5 jacks throughout the house but they left me with all the wires unlabeled with no terminals. I purchased this kit in the hopes I could finish the work myself. The kit came with everything I knew I’d need but also something I didn’t. Ok, there’s a small learning curve and I didn’t do well on my first two attempts but I quickly learned and every one after that went perfectly. After attaching the plug I plugged it into the master test unit and then went through the house with the remote until I located the connected jack. Simple.I even discovered that one of the jacks had a bad connection and I was able to use the “push-down tool” (the thing I mentioned not knowing I’d need) to fix it. I can only imagine how much money I saved by not having to hire someone to come in and do the job.Ok, here are my two tips. First, do your best to completely straighten out the twisted wires and lay them flat and as tightly together between your forefinger and thumb and them cut them straight across to make them COMPLETELY even. Then inserting them into the plug should meet only slight resistance. If you have to force it you probably have something out of alignment.Secondly, after you firmly crimp the plug with it fully inserted into the tool, release the pressure only enough to allow you to pull the plug back out SLIGHTLY and then apply crimping pressure again. The components is this kit and even the case it comes in feel high quality. The tester is not just a continuity tester, it actually has some smarts built in and I would have been willing to pay as much for it as I did the entire kit.Great value and great results.
