I have been using this type of bit for over thirty years and have never seen one as bad as this one. All the videos you see on YouTube the people are drilling downward and use all there weight to push down. In a real world situation that is not the case. Bit loses the auger and clogged the blade quickly. Had to take it apart after the first try. I threw it in the trash after the third try. Save your money.

I bought this to see if it performed as stated, “strong enough to withstand nail strikes”, but it’s not, and after striking a thin 18-guage brad nail I’d have had to switch out the blade, but it didn’t come with even a single replacement blade (!) and the replacement blades are expensive. Plan on going through a lot of them for any sort of production in wood that might have any nails in it. BTW, I then used an older Milwaukee (NON- “Switchblade”) bit, one that had endured nail strike(s), and it performed well because the cutting edge is more durable steel. This bit could be great if the blade was better steel, and/or if it were designed to pull out the blade to more easily sharpen and re-use versus having to buy expensive replacement blades.

When retrofitting plumbing in my old rentals I'm often drilling through floors. Auger bits are quite expensive and are really overkill. This paddle bit is perfect. It goes through OSB board, and old fur and oak planks easily. This will not go through nails however, nails ruin the blades. Usually when drilling through floors it's pretty obvious where there are and aren't nails. You can not only replace the blades, but sharpen them, removing them makes them easier to sharpen with sandpaper or a file. You don't need a drill-doctor to get the angle right. You use a small hex-allen wrench to tighten the blades in. The screw that feeds the bit is also replaceable.I use it with a milwaukee hex-impact wrench, which is basically a milwaukee impact wrench that has been factory modded to accommodate these large bits. Impact wrenches aren't typically for drilling holes, but when holes are this large, it is the preferred method. With a normal 1/2" drill, if the bit gets stuck in wood, which has a greater tendency to happen the larger the bit, it can literally break your wrist. With an impact wrench, the impact is transferred to the hammer/anvil mechanism in the drill.Hope that helps!
