white pearly gates morning glory vine climber seeds for an outdoor privacy fence

Are you an early riser? If so, you may just catch a glimpse of these glorious white flowers opening! The Pearly Gates Morning Glory (Ipomoea tricolor) produces scores of trumpet-shaped blossoms, each two to four inches in diameter. Twisted into a spiral when closed, the flowers unravel before dawn into large stunning pearly white blooms, ready for the first pollinators of the morning. But don't worry if you don't get out at dawn - the flowers last well on the vine so you'll enjoy them all day.

First cultivated by the Aztecs and inhabitants of the Oaxaca region of Mexico, Pearly Gates variety is a pure white mutation of Heavenly Blue Morning Glories. Pearly Gates is a prolific bloomer and produces flowers from early summer through late fall. Although it prefers well-drained moist soil, it will establish itself even in poorer soil, if the soil is tilled. Once established, it requires little care other than watering once or twice a week. To promote continued flowering, remove spent blooms regularly.

The heart-shaped dark green leaves offer a lush backdrop to the blossoms and the vine climbs vigorously as high as 13 feet, making it a perfect plant for a trellis, garden gateway or pergola. It will love mailbox posts, fences and hanging baskets too! Planting it together with blue or purple varieties makes a stunning display.

Sown as an annual, Pearly Gates prefers full sun to very light shade and is hardy in all zones. If you want Pearly Gates to self-sow and return in the following spring, simply leave some of the spent flowers on the vine. The flowers dry and drop their seeds - and you'll look forward to another season of heavenly white flowers.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

You will notice that Morning Glory seeds consist of a hard outer shell. Before sowing these seeds, they should be prepped by scarification or soaking. Sometimes you can even consider both methods. Nick the seeds with sandpaper or a knife and soak in warm water, for 24 hours. If starting indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Place the seeds at a depth of 1/2" under topsoil. Transplant, or direct sow into the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Morning Glory plants will thrive in the heat of summer and prefer an area of full sunlight. Temperatures should be at least 70F or higher. The soil should be average to sandy, but also well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily until germination has occurred, watering less frequently as time goes on.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Morning Glory seeds typically germinate within roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants are known to grow and establish with the support of a fence or trellis. Each vine can grow to a mature length of 7 to 13 feet long, displaying large, trumpet shaped flowers all summer long. Each plant can be spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart, depending on the thickness of coverage you desire. Morning Glories are known to attract all sorts of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees & hummingbirds as well.

I have a fence with three sections, and every summer I attempt to grow one section with red, another with white, and the last with blue in time for the 4th of July.. but every year I have trouble getting the white morning glories to grow .. I had gotten the seeds from Home Depot, but after two years of failure, I tried these .. and .. this year my white morning glories not only grew, but out did the red and blue ones too .. you don’t get the 100 seeds (at least I didn’t) but you get enough .. would recommend as they definitely are better! I did soak them overnight in Hydrogen peroxide and water and that probably helped some, but that’s what I did for all the seeds

Most of these are beautiful white morning glories but there are several vines of different colors mixed in. I’m still happy with them, just something to watch out for.

The seeds had an approximately 85% germination rate, which is acceptable. The plants are doing well they grow very quickly and will soon put on flowers. The seeds came quickly and there was the advertised amount.

The seeds germinated very quickly and grew into very healthy plants. In fact there are some that were so healthy that I am going to try to bring in the house over the winter months. I am very happy with this product and will likely buy more earlier in the spring for next year.

In no way do I mean to offend the other person who included a picture with their review- I just wanted to clarify that is actually not pearly gates. It’s very pretty though ! It may be ipomoea tricolor as well, but there are multiple varieties .* Pearly gates are huge PURE white with a beautiful yellow glowing center.*UPDATE 10-25-18 - I grew these [ Ipomoea tricolor] near the same vine but different cultivar 'heavenly blue' - the heavenly blues being from a different seed company. Every single single pearly gates vine is diseased and their few buds distorted. The heavenly blues are all perfectly fine. There are multiple locations in my yard with the vines growing. So despite having same growing conditions, as well as being technically the same vine but different color, all of them are diseased and barely alive. In this case, I am highly convinced it was the seeds vs customer /growing error.I don't mean to sound so harsh, but I cannot recommend this brand. These morning glories are my favorite flower and I really put a lot of my focus on these vines, and was excited all during the summer to see the flowers that bloom late September here i zone 8. I won't have my pearly gates this year, but at least I have my heavenly blues.I literally don't know how I feel about these. I never blame the seed seller or the seeds when ever something I try to grow does not succeed.. this summer I was sooooooo excited about growing pearly gates, and waited so patiently for the late bloomers. I had these germinate outside early in the season as expected. I had some heavenly blue morning glory seeds growing also. (They are both called Ipomoea tricolor)For some reason, the only success was with heavenly blue aside from one pearly white vine that is almost dead. The other areas pearly gates are not doing well at all, very scraggly and browning.I don't believe this is the fault of the seeds, but instead must just be something else. I just don't understand why these didn't thrive well enough to make it to flowers, while my blue ones did. Both growing in same area and same conditions. Last year I had a pearly gates vine surprise from a random pack of seeds, the vine was covered in white flowers. So I'm just slightly unsure as to why these did not thrive/began to scraggle and brown while the other morning glories made it to many beautiful blue flowers.I am hesitant to put all blame on the company/seller. I will leave it with 3 stars.
