spearmint herb seeds for planting

Grow a garden filled with the aromatic Spearmint herb, from freshly harvested Mentha spicata herb seeds. Spearmint is an ancient heirloom that originates from much of Europe. These herbs were introduced into North America in the late 1500's. The plants are fragrant and flavorful, like that of Peppermint. The leaves and oils are used to flavor toothpastes, candies, breath mints and most of all, chewing gum! Growing to a mature height of roughly 2 feet tall, Spearmint will display dozens of bright green, attractive leaves, which are deeply veined. The flowers are pink to purple in color and bloom through the summer months.

Spearmint is categorized as a perennial flowering herb. Perennials will establish a deep root system in their initial year of growth. They then use this root system to return the following Spring season, even after all plant life has wilted on the surface. Mints, such as Spearmint, are known to be rather invasive at times, spreading through underground roots and runners. This leads most herb gardeners to placing it in pots and containers to otherwise contain its growth. The seeds can drop to the bare ground beneath, often times establishing new plant life around its already established parents.

These fragrant plants are known to attract a few beneficial insects to the garden, such as bumblebees & honeybees. Spearmint is also known to deter some pesky insects as well, such as the white cabbage butterfly, as well as mosquito's and fleas. Simply pick a leaf, crush it up and rub it on your skin for a natural mosquito repellant.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Spearmint seeds are pretty tiny, so they are best established indoors, in a controlled environment. Start in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Scatter the tiny seeds directly to the surface of the soil, not covering them with any topsoil, since the will require light to germinate properly. Transplant your Spearmint herbs into larger pots or containers once the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. If direct sowing outdoors, be aware that Spearmint can spread through underground runners, so sowing in pots, or a contained area is best.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Spearmint herbs are fairly adaptive when it comes to lighting. They can thrive in areas of full sun or partial shade and require temperatures of at least 70F to flourish. The soil can be rich in organic matter, or poor and sandy, just make sure that it is well drained. To increase your drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water the soil daily with a light mist setting or spray bottle, to avoid the disruption and/or washing away of your Spearmint seeds.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Spearmint can be more of a difficult herb to establish from seed, but they typically take anywhere between 7 and 28 days to germinate successfully. The plants grow vigorously, to a mature height of about 2 feet tall, and again should be placed in containers or in a controlled area to prevent it from spreading into other areas of the garden. The purple flowers will bloom several weeks after the plants are established, attracting many bumblebees & honeybees as well. Use these herbs to ward off pesky insects, such as fleas and mosquitos.

Don't rely on just reviews because the ones I heard for these seeds were bad. I germinated them my way and they all germinated perfectly. Every one popped up. The picture is 3 weeks worth of growth.

Not sure if it was my fault, but the tiny seedlings died off fairly quickly.

Read all the negative reviews and decided to try anyway since none of them mentioned aerogarden. Im impressed with the results. Second time planted- sprouts within 5 days as at the first time. Great product. Do not overseed, that was my mistake during the first time with it! Very high germination rate with aerogarden.

On May 13, 2020, I bought “Spearmint Herb (Mentha spicata) Twin Pack of 1,000 Seeds Each Non-GMO” and “Peppermint Herb (Mentha piperita) Twin Pack of 1,000 Seeds Each Non-GMO” all from Seed Needs. I scattered a total of around 4,000 seeds on the soil all around the outside of my house, in many varying degrees of available rain and sunlight, so at least a few of them should be in the right conditions to grow. I sowed them well after the last frost, and now nearly 4 months later, not a single plant has sprouted. It makes me wonder if they even sell viable seeds.

So far so good with these spearmint seeds. Within a week of receiving the seed, I planted the spearmint in containers to start in mid March 2020 in MS. As of April 2nd, the sprouts are above the soil and growing heartily.

The packaging is adorable, I love how informative it is and it looks kind of old school. These seeds sprouted well. I followed instructions and read a bit online before planting. I sprinkled them on top of the soil and left them moist and a sunny spot on my poarch. It took a long time to see the growth, but they are tiny tiny seeds. I now have little baby spearmint plants!
