Scitus, A Trusted Company with a Mission to Help End Lead Poisoning

• Discover the reliability, speed, and convenience of Scitus Lead Testing Swabs for your home. Built on proven chemistry, Scitus swabs are manufactured in our USA facility.

Don't endanger your family when you can get accurate results in 30 seconds.

• Our simple, four-step instruction process makes it easy for anyone to use.

  1. Simply clean the area in your house that you want to test
  2. Dip the swab in household (standard) vinegar until it turns a yellow-mustard color
  3. Apply the swab to the test area, rub for 30 seconds or until you see a color change on the swab and/or test area, then compare to the Color Chart on Scitus products. A color change to pink, violet, or purple indicates the presence of lead.

Please note that when testing non-housepaint items, false negatives may occur for various reasons and factors it is not appropriate to use Scitus or another brand of swabs on consumer goods. (Check out our SCITUS GLOW TEST) Dangerous levels for children and adults may be found on objects whose surfaces either hide the lead from the swabs or have levels of lead that are low enough that it is not readily detectable by the test but, if handled by a person, will put off an amount of lead which if consumed would be harmful.

• For homes with multiple layers of paint, take care to test all layers. You can do this by cutting a V-shaped notch into the wall. By creating a ravine, you will expose all layers of paint. Rub the swab inside the ravine to detect hidden, historical lead on your walls.

• Clean-up is a breeze with Scitus Lead Testing Swabs. Our SCITUS swabs are activated by vinegar from your kitchen!

• Each package contains 30 high-quality lead detection swabs making it easy to test throughout your home. When you run a cost comparison, you'll find that Scitus offers the most economical option on the market without compromising quality. At SCITUS, we batch-test our production runs to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our testing products.

• Use Scitus Lead Testing Swabs to find lead in house paint. Our swabs offer the most economical, scientifically formulated home chemical lead testing solution available on the market today. This product is designed for use on house paint; it is not designed for use on non-painted surfaces - including ceramics and enamels (pottery, china, stoneware, dishware, tiles, bath tubs, etc.) - (Check out our SCITUS GLOW TEST for testing on everything else). As with all similar tests, if a metallic surface is tested, a positive-looking reaction will occur if zinc is present.

Purchased this product to test for lead on dishes and on the walls of old paint. Never came up positive on any of those thankfully, however when one of my coffee cups had the small cover on the bottom fall off I decided to text that. It changed color very quickly letting me know that there was lead there. It was super convenient to have that and to know right away if I should try to fix and keep using that cup or just toss it.

These test swabs are a little trickier to use since you have to use vinegar to activate them but in my opinion that makes the a good bit more accurate since it helps dissolve the surface material being tested into solution. and that's important since i've been using them to test cast iron and house paint. they color mete included with the kit is very easy to read and understand and can give an accurate reading in a matter of seconds not minutes. there are plenty to go around which is why i started testing cast iron lol.

We had a new dinnerware set that we had ordered. It came from China, where we know the use of lead is a bit more laxed than here in the US. I ordered this testing kit, because I wanted to double check that it was lead-free before we started using the new dishes. I started by testing the plates, and I was happy that it came back negative. Since I had 30 swabs, I thought that I would test a few other items. I've had this red plate since I was a boy that is meant for special occasions. It was made in the 70's, and it is red. Red paint is more apt to have lead than other colors, so I thought it prudent to check this plate. I was a little shocked when it also came back negative. We also have McDonald's Garfield and Snoopy glasses from the 80s. We don't use them. They are stored in a glass case. We stopped using them months ago after we read online that they included lead paint. I decided to test one of each of these sets. Both also came back negative. I have literally watched videos of these glasses being swabbed with lead testing kits, and I have seen the positive results. I do not think that these strips work.

I bought these because a slightly less expensive brand gave me false positives. These swabs appear to be significantly more reliable and less likely to generate false positives.I tried a head-to-head test with city water, suburban water, and distilled water that I made myself with a home distiller. With the other swabs that are activated by water, I received a positive result from both city and suburban water. This occurred just by dipping the swabs in the water prior to testing for lead. Both city and suburban waters turned strongly pink and the distilled water remained yellow. The residue in the distiller was also strongly positive for lead with a strong magenta result. With these swabs, which are activated by white vinegar, all three waters remained yellow and there was no indication of lead.I also tested various non-ferrous metals with known compositions such as brass, bronze, and copper. All were negative, as they should be, with these swabs. With the other, water activated, swabs, several samples of these metals were falsely positive. Both types of swabs were strongly positive with known samples of lead. These swabs are accurate, according to my testing.

These seem to work great. When testing newer paint that we knew didn't contain lead they clearly read as negative. When testing older paint that we knew was lead-based, they turned a bright magenta immediately. So far they have produced expected results (whether positive or negative) for every paint we were sure or pretty sure about, which gives me confidence in the results for the paint we aren't sure about. It's given me a lot of peace of mind knowing which parts of our very old house we need to be careful about.

So glad I bought these to use on a very expensive set of China I inherited from My mom who received it as a wedding gift back in 1968. Very easy to use and put my mind at ease that the China is safe to use. I also used it on a Vintage rival crockpot with a glazed interior from the 1990s which also tested negative which I now feel safe to sell. I have a lot of extra left so I wonder if they ever expire. Still a small price to pay to be safe and sorry.

Tested this kit on multiple surfaces, including some I suspected had traces of lead, and it worked as advertised. Results showed within 30 seconds, and I could easily confirm the presence of lead. The instructions were clear, and with 30 swabs included, I had more than enough to test all the areas I was concerned about. This kit is a "must-have" for anyone looking to identify lead hazards quickly and accurately. Note that lead is NOT only on walls and paint.. A lot of products coming from overseas are testing positive for traces of lead, and inside homes, there may be lead on plumbing, paint, ceramic tiles and glazes in some homes or pottery especially with decorative glazes may contain lead... Plastics/Rubber/Silicone/Electronics etc.. Furniture and antique toys, and get this > Bathtubs, it turns out that older porcelain-coated bathtubs can have lead in the glaze and leak lead over time...In addition: Electronics and Cables: Some older electronics and cables (like power cords) contain lead in their coatings. If in doubt, CHECK IT.. This kit will do that... Good luck.

When it comes to ensuring the safety of your home environment, lead testing becomes a top priority. As a registered nurse, I work with many children who have high blood lead levels and thought these would be a great option to recommend to parents to test their home environments and commonly- sourced lead items such as pottery and painted ceramic. These at-home lead tests offer a simple and straightforward testing process. By wetting the provided swab with vinegar and rubbing it against the surface in question, you can determine if lead is present. A color change to pink indicates the presence of lead, while the swab retaining its original color signifies its absence. This straightforward method makes it easy for anyone to perform a quick lead test without requiring specialized knowledge or equipment. The Limitation: Does NOT Work on Ceramic Surfaces!!!One significant drawback worth mentioning is that these lead tests do not work effectively on ceramic surfaces. If your intention is to test ceramic mugs, pottery, or other ceramic items, these tests may not provide accurate results. It's essential to note that the tests are primarily designed for non-ceramic surfaces, such as testing for lead paint on walls or other non-porous materials.Recommendation: Ideal for Non-Ceramic SurfacesWhile these lead tests may not be suitable for ceramic items, they are still highly recommended for testing non-ceramic surfaces, especially when checking for lead paint or other potential lead-containing materials. The ease of use and relatively accurate results make them a valuable tool for homeowners concerned about lead exposure.

I got these to test my brass as common alloys can have high lead contents. They work as expected. On alloys I expected to contain lead (360 brass alloy), they turn distinctly purple. On other types of brass they only turned orange, so I don't think lead was detected. Tip: if you're looking for a positive control, solder is a good source of lead and turns the test purple almost instantly. The yellow/orange colour seems to fade after a few minutes, leaving the purple more obvious.
