While the unit isn't waterproof, it comes with a larger battery than the stock build, GPS and a custom 3D printed case. The best thing about Meshtastic is that you can use encryption. This still works from the Android app as well. The Mestastic firmware has an active development community, so there is always something new. Encryption was added some time ago, but there is a limit to transmission power because all of our spectrum has been usurped by the government. HAMs can transmit at a higher power but the privacy through encryption cannot be used at those power levels. I doubt they can even pass through an encrypted message if the HAMs are running Meshtastic repeater nodes. Still a fun way to communicate. This is strictly text messaging, so don't expect to use it as a walkie talkie, at least for now.

I wouldn't recommend this. The antenna doesn't get great reception and battery life is terrible. I'd recommend the R1 from Muzi.

I purchased a few different Spec5 devices to try out around the farm back in October. I've found that each of them has a different use for me. The S5 Ranger’s combination of a physical keyboard and touch-screen interface makes it a lot easier to use when I'm on the move. The fact that I don't need it paired with a phone means I can leave it in the truck and use it without having to carry around my phone. So far the device is going strong. I'd say it is worth the money, and it is made in Texas, so that's an added plus!
