Wow, I bought this as a base for a roof top tent and I'm impressed how bad this is to mount. The hardware which came with the base is just not right. The bolts into the roof are near impossible to reach with the included 5mm allen key, it's absolutely impossible to give the bolts the proper torque. The "reach through the rack" is a joke as well, it just doesn't align properly.It should mount (mostly) straight up from the mount points in the roof, so you can use proper tools AND it should be straight (level left to right) when mounted – these are not, they curve in towards the roof and will only pull straight when the rack on top is mounted, which puts undue strain on the roof metal.This rack mount sacrifices proper function and ease of install for as of now unknown reasons (probably just looks).I can NOT recommend the Rhino Backbone for the 5th gen 4Runner due to the bad choices by the manufacturer.

The backbone was easy to install. We coupled this with Rhino-Rack 42107BF Flat Pack Pioneer Platform Rack, 84" x 49" on our 2019 4Runner.
