So first... the good. The plumb bob itself. It's weighty, it's sturdy, and it feels good. The winder? Also good. But there's a small problem. It winds into the flimsiest plastic case I have ever felt in my LIFE in a tool. Seriously. This is absolute garbage. I've felt disposable tape measures with sturdier casings than this.It has a pin for holding it in place! In case you wanna stab holes in things, I guess. It's not good for that, really. It has a magnet to keep it up too! Except that's no good either because the magnet can barely hold the weight of the winder case, and absolutely CAN'T hold the weight of the bob itself.Who thought any of this was a good idea? Seriously. This thing bangs around in a toolbox a little bit and it'll be in pieces.

If you’ve ever wrestled with an old-school plumb bob - wrapping the string around a spindle like you’re loading up a fishing reel - you’re in for a treat. This Retractable Plumb Bob Tool modernizes the classic concept with an automatic spool that extends and retracts the line with ease. Think of it like those fancy miniblinds that just go up and down without a cord or twisty wand. It’s a small innovation, but one that makes a big difference when you’re working. The Good Stuff:Super Convenient Spool System: No more manually wrapping up the string. Just lift the plumb bob, and the line reels itself back in. That’s a step up!Multiple Mounting Options: It’s got a sharp pin for securing to wood (or anything that allows for a puncture) and a strong magnet that sticks to ferrous surfaces like steel beams or metal door frames.Good Quality String: The synthetic yellow thread is strong and visible—feels like it’ll hold up well over time.Adjustable Resistance: You can swap in different plumb bobs (5oz–16oz), and the mechanism adapts so the line stabilizes quickly.Plastic Safety Lock: This prevents accidental deployment of the pin when you don’t need it—a nice touch.Restringing is Possible: Though not covered in the instructions, the plastic case has small screws that let you open it up and replace the string if needed. The Not-So-Great:Plastic Housing = Durability Concerns: The case is lightweight, which is nice, but it’s also plastic. I haven’t tested its drop survivability (not ready to sacrifice it just yet), but I suspect it wouldn’t take a serious fall like the old-school metal plumb bobs. A carbon-fiber-reinforced body would be a great upgrade. Not Quite Commercial-Grade: While it’s excellent for DIYers and light professional use, I wouldn’t expect it to hold up to rough, daily jobsite abuse like a heavy-duty steel plumb bob.Final Thoughts:I put this thing to work on a few routine tasks, plus one specialized job, and I’m happy to report that gravity is still doing its job - which is great news for plumb bobs everywhere. For DIYers and occasional users, this is a fantastic upgrade over traditional designs, offering convenience without a steep learning curve. For contractors or heavy-duty pros, it’s a bit of a toss-up—great functionality, but the long-term durability of the plastic body is a question mark.At around $32, it’s a solid value if you appreciate the modern conveniences it brings to the table. Definitely recommended - just don’t drop it off a ladder to test its toughness.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)

Overall, I like the main feature of the BONNEAIDE Retractable Plumb Bob, which is the retractable string. This makes it easy to use and convenient to use. Its main feature is also its weakness, so I deducted one star. You extend and retract the string just by pulling and pushing it back in. There is no winding mechanism like a tape measure or little crank to dial it in or out. It works fine new, but I suspect with dust and dirt getting on the string, this feature is susceptible to failure. It is my conjecture, and it is working fine so far.The bob itself is heavy and of good quality. I also like the convenient attachment methods: its internal retractable pin, a magnet, or a hole for hanging it on a nail.Overall, I like and recommend this product.

I got this for a backup for my old school plumb bob that my dad gave me decades ago, that he had had for decades before that. I bought some heavy twisted cotton string for that one and is what I prefer.I really don't use a plumb bob in the way that this one is set up with a magnet or small nail or retractable line but I can see the point. I still prefer to knock my own nail in and wrap the string in such a way that I plumb things the way I want.I will say this this is one heavy plumb bob and the swivel base on this is pretty cool and should produce very accurate results. However, the string is so tiny it's kind of freaky - maybe it's OK but I'm definitely not used to that.It seems like the string retractor on this is bound to fail eventually leaving you with a kind of a mess to deal with so maybe it's convenient for now, but I don't trust it for my primary.I didn't knock off any stars because this thing performs just as claimed and my objections mainly amount to personal preferences only, so no shade on this item. Maybe this is the state of plumb bobs now and I'm just out of touch! LOL Wouldn't surprise me!

This is a really heavy duty plumb bob. The weight at the bottom is very solid. The string almost seems a little too thin for the solid weight. But it works well. I guess it's ballanced somehow internally; when you release the strain of the plumb bob on the canister, it automatically starts to reel in the string. But it doesn't fall by itself, you have to pull on it. The little needle that sticks out just pushes out when you push on the black button. There's a little black tab that you can slide to lock it inside, so it doesn't accidentally poke you. The magnet on the base is indented about an 1/8 of an inch, but I haven't tried it out yet. I wish it had a little pull out tab that you could use to hang it as well, instead of just having the magnet or the pin. Otherwise, seems great quality and happy to recommend
