If your projector has a focus motor in it, then this is the kit for you. If your projector does NOT have a focus motor, please order: Link & Rivet Set for Pre-1981 Kodak Carousel Slide Projector. The most common cause for the failure of the slide tray to advance or reverse is the breakage of this small Link (part 217769). It fits on the end of the solenoid actuator arm and is held in place by a Rivet (part 159943). The replacement of this part does not take a rocket scientist; however, a moderate mechanical aptitude skill is required. You will also find that the focus motor gear (part FM-GEAR) and the gear next to the focus motor gear (part 167348). It is best to remove the old gears BEFORE replacing the link then replacing them after the link has been installed. This Kit contains 1 Link, 1 Rivet, 1 Focus Motor Gear and 1 Gear Next to Focus Motor Gear.

The problem with the projector was indeed the "Cycle Solenoid Link" as described in the instructions that came with the repair parts kit. The problem was that the Cycle Solenoid Link included in the kit was too thick to fit in the bracket on the solenoid without filing the plastic part down. I already had one of these plastic parts from another vendor that was thinner and I used that. The remote focus gears that were included with this kit fit OK and were necessary since the old gears crumbled when touched. The other problem was the rivet to attach the plastic Cycle Solenoid Link. The old rivet was too tough to cut with the side cutting pliers that I had so I had to file off the head. The second problem was that I couldn't get the new rivet to expand properly. If you have a rivet setting punch you'll probably be able to do this without too much trouble. I didn't have one so I used the cotter pin that came with the other part to attach the link to the solenoid. Overall the instructions were accurate and explained in detail how to repair the projector. It was not a particularly quick fix in that it took several hours. The two hardest parts were: shoving the link into the slot where it belongs and lining up the solenoid with the holes in the solenoid support plate so that you could replace the little screws that hold the solenoid to the support plate. Also the resistor that is used on the low lamp setting shed little bits of ceramic, so you might want to have a vacuum handy when you open it. Bottom line is that the projector now works. Since i have about 1000 old slides and a refurbished projector on ebay costs about $280 I considered this time and money well spent.

I had the classic would not advance problem. I disagree that it is a 30 minute fix, probably 3-4 hours to do a good job. You need to be handy with tools and have the right tools. I agree with the two reviewers who said it is a much easier fix if you cut away the sheet metal above the solenoid. When I finished the install, the cycle solenoid worked and the slide would advance (which it would not do before). Then when I put the case on, the projector would not advance. I read on line that sometimes you need to press the advance and return buttons a number of times to clear a jam. So I tried that and then it started working and has been working ever since. In removing the solenoid I accidently broke the auto focus gear. This wasn't a problem since the kit comes with a new one. Pounding the new gear onto the splined shaft took me about 1/2 hour. The instructions recommend using a 1/4" socket, drive extension, and a hammer. You want to be gentle to not break the gear and still put enough force on the gear to get it on the shaft. I recommend you remove the lenses and the bulb while doing the hammering. The instructions were very clear and there is also a youtube video that describes how to fix the projector. Don't go with the youtube video that wants you to take the entire projector apart. I didn't think the auto focus was working when I put it back together so I took the case off and saw that the motor was driving the gears and moving the lens. I read in the manual that auto focus works after you manually focus a slide the first time. It seems to be working much quieter than before. I am using this projector to sort slides to make digital copies. This fix came in handy for getting the projector back working.

I give this 5 stars for the quality of the parts and 4 pages of directions with lots of color pictures. However this is not a 30 minute job, more like 4 to 5 hours and if you frustrated easily this is absolutely not for you. I attempted this, busted the auto focus part while attaching a gear. Had the advance working for 30 seconds then it burst into flames (mostly smoke) so that was 4 hours wasted. Kodak is to blame for this, the company had a lot of problems back then and the design of this is the worst. Anyway, avoid this unless you have a work bench was plenty of light and tools and time to take this apart. Take lots of pictures for easy reassembly and good luck.Ps. The hole idea is a good one but vacuum as you cut or the shavings will cause damage.
