This waterer is our second one. The first froze over the below freezing temperature spell we had earlier this month, January 2025. This waterer is higher quality than most of the others in this price range with dedicated spouts for our chickens. But it does have a few drawbacks which is the reason for the one star deduction.Pros: 5 gallons means you only have to refill once a week for 6 chickens Individual spouts means a cleaner area with less water evaporation and spills around the container Lid keeps dirt and debris out of water with a dedicated hose spout location. High quality plastic and access to spouts on two sidesCons: Due to the shape, there is not a great heater option for below freezing temperatures. most heaters are for metal containers or for circular containers and sits on the base. Since this is neither metal, nor circular, it was very tough to find a heater that would keep the water from freezing and also not melt the plastic Since it is plastic, if it freezes when over half full, the expansion will likely crack the container which is what happened with our first one There is a hose spout with a cap and then a triangular lid that sits on top. This is nice to keep out debris, but can get annoying having to set aside the cap and the triangular top when filling.Overall I really like it better than most options which is why I bought another one. Can't beat it for the price and would be perfect if you live in a warmer climate where it doesn't freeze. Still worth the money if you find the right heater for it in cold weather as well.

I used to have a large chicken waterer with a trough, but soon realized it was not only hard to keep clean it was attracting rats! I immediately switched to this style and now the rats have lost their precious water source. (You should do the same with their food. We use Grandpas Feeder, which protects the food from being accessible to rodents.)I have six chickens, so works great in the summer to make sure they have plenty of water. It's easy to clean and refill. You can buy these nipple separately and make those waterer on your own, but I don't have the time.

I've had this for about a year. When i bought it, my chickens were about 6 months old and had only ever used open waterers. I don't need to describe the mess chickens will make with open waterers and how much maintenance they need. They understood how this worked within minutes, I guess their instinct to peck EVERYTHING helps. It's cut my work by miles. I just need to make sure this doesn't run empty and they never run out of water. It has an access port at the top of the lid that fits the power cord for a deicer to use in winter which also helps.

This has worked really well for a dozen chickens. It is easy to fill, stays clean (with anti-perch cone, which I recommend using). It has made it through winter and spring. Even if it freezes hard, you just thaw it and no leaks.I elevate it with a 6''-8'' block for easy access. The handle makes it easy to carry. The nipples are all in and ready to go. So you just add water. We have two ducks that seem fond of it, too (though they have a small pond as well).

When other reviewers wrote that this product changed their relationship with their chickens, I thought "Hyperbole. How can a plastic bucket be that good?" It turns out, those reviewers were right on the money. I no longer have to change the water for my birds every day, and I don't have to wash out the waterers because green gunk grows inside them. And there is no poop in the water, and no dirt or leaves or small animals fouling up the works. The water stays clear and clean, and the buckets are easy to open and clean out when you need to; which isn't very often. It's easy to add apple cider vinegar through the opening on the top, and there are no worries that any of the parts will corrode or react to the ACV. I place my buckets on top of cement blocks and clip the chains to a hook above the bucket for stability. My chickens learned to use the nipples immediately. The red plastic and the sparkly metal pieces got their attention, and they were hooked when I made the water trickle out. That was all it took. My rooster was a great teacher. He'd call the hens over, peck at the nipple, and then stand aside to let them in. So, it's true. This bucket changed my relationship with my chickens. Instead of spending so much time changing, filling, cleaning and hauling waterers, I can watch my birds gather round the buckets and do amusing chicken things. And the very best thing of all?! When I had a problem with a bucket, I posted a comment and RentACoop replied within hours - really! - and said they'd send me a new bucket and a label to return the one with the problem. All on their nickel. And they did - the replacement arrived within days Great product, great company, great way to care for chickens. NOTE: I use two 5-gallon waterers and one 2-gallon waterer for 50 full-size chickens, plus one 2-gallon for my Silikies. Everybody's happy. Me too.
