It worked well especially for the price and was a name brand (same as a big box store) for a fraction of the price.

Only one complaint is the trigger signal. If you have air brakes you will have to use either your Jake brake signal or find another signal from the pedal being applied. The dilemma is do you want your trailer brake lights to come on when the Jake brakes come on or not and do you want the trailer brakes to come on when the brake pedal is pressed or when the Jake’s come on. It’s a nice controller, it also has delay feature (gain). I would recommend it. I guess this is way over complicating this but it’s a blessing to have this knowledge. Praise Jesus

The controller is ok. But it arrived missing what I would call essential parts. Missing mounting hardware, and operating instructions.I have installed similar controllers so for me it wasn't a a big problem. A trip to the hardware store will solve that. I would have sent this back but for lack of extra time. The controller is 4 stars. The missing parts is the reason for the downgrade.

Simple to use, can be mounted anywhere, any orientation. Just plug it in, make some adjustments, and go. I was towing a trailer with my racecar (5000lbs). I rent a truck to take the racecar to some more distant tracks, so minimum install hassle is nice. I bought a plug adapter for the Ford truck I rent which has all the trailer/brake wiring. This unit just comes with wire leads so the plug makes it easy to install and remove (see link below for plug adapter). Note this is an electronic "timed" brake controller. You need to adjust the rate at which the brakes are applied (Sync) and the clamping force (voltage) separately. Once the sync was set (mid range worked for me), I found that all I needed to do was adjust the clamping force depending on whether I was on a highway (higher speed, more clamping) or local street (lower speed, less clamping). The clamping is adjusted with the a small slider on the front of the unit. I did find that I had to be a bit more deliberate and smooth in applying the bakes. If you like to "poke" at your brakes, the controller tends to cycle the trailer brakes on-off every time you lift and poke, just be smooth and try not to lift all the way off the pedal once you start your braking. Sounds more complicated than it is, and you get used to it once you try it. Good value for my needs.See these additional reviews for the rest of the components (COPY AND PASTE THE LINKS):For making a plug-in connection with brake wires at rear of truckhttp://www.amazon.com/review/R3PZPXT42Y3UJM/ref=cm_cr_rdp_permFor in cab under dash connection to brake controller:http://www.amazon.com/review/R3SZN23EZQF060/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

I am an average person homeowner; without any affliation with Reese, Amazon, or any related business in towing products that this review content covers. I hope this review is an honest attempt to help others to who need a good product.I purchased this in early Sept 2012. I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota QuadCab with a 4.7 V-8 that I installed the Reese Towpower 74642 Brakeman Compact Brake Control on the front passenger side of the vehicle, for lack of space. It worked flawlessly after the easy installation. I used it in conjunction with a 2002 LoadStar Tow-Dolly that had electric brakes on the tow dolly. I towed a 2004 Chevy Malibu LS from South Dakota to Washington Maine [via Michigan(where the tow dolly was picked-up), Western Ohio, Northeastern Kentucky, Southeastern Ohio, Northwaestrn West Virgina, Southern & Eastern Pennsylvania; before continuing to Maine, some 3185 miles]. It worked throughout the Eastern mountion ranger of the USA. It was a lifesaver on a couple of occation on our trip when a bad driver would cut us off in an emergency suitation. I am glad to be able to purchase this at such a low price, on my small budget. No trailer place or even Wal-Mart could match the price of @$25.00. Most wanted $70.00 or more for a compatible product. It has a slide lever [instad of a roll switch to set the magnets on the trailer brakes] which is hard to see on first use. Just read the owners manual; it's worth the time & short reading. I will recommend it to anyone who needs a brake controller. One recommended add on with purchase is a 20-amp self-reseting fuse for this product.
