I have one of those 1liter wood barrels that I bought used. I'd been putting off using it because I hadn't gotten around to cleaning it. This kit saves me from my excuses. For cleaning your barrel, you want to first fill it with hot water and check for leaks. You may want to let it sit for a day or two to allow the wood to swell. If you still have minor leaks, use the barrel wax to seal them. Dump the water.Dissolve 1 oz Oxy-San in 1 gallon of warm water. Fill the barrel with this cleaning solution and soak for 24 hours. Empty and rinse 3 times with hot water.Dissolve 1oz Citric Acid in 1 gallon of warm water. Fill the barrel with this neutralizing solution and soak for 15 minutes. Empty and rinse the barrel 3 times with hot water. Your barrel is ready to be filled with the booze of your choice. If you will not be filling your barrel right away (within a couple days), you'll want to store it with water and the campden tablets to prevent nasties from taking up residence. Dissolve the 2 campden tablets in 1 gallon of cool water. Fill the barrel with the solution. If you will be storing your barrel for an extended period of time, you'll want to top off the solution as the angels take their share. When you're ready to use, dump the solution and and rinse 3 times with hot water.

The product made me chuckle when I opened it because it looked like I got illegal things shipped to me haha. I bought a small bourbon barrel a few months ago. I had no idea it required extra TLC until I saw this product. It's a nice little amount perfect for storing until it needs used again and luckily it came with directions because I'd have no idea what to do without it! It also says what each one is used for. My only problem is it doesn't say how long each should sit in the barrel before emptying which is the reason for one less star. Overall, I'm happy with it.

I really like the idea of getting all of these items grouped together as a kit so I do not have to hunt around to purchase them all separately. You do not get a lot of each product but enough to get the job done which is fine. Instructions are on a label on each of the plastic bags, but it would be nice to have had a single instruction sheet with all directions in one place in a linear fashion, such as step 1, step 2, etc. We recently purchased an oak barrel from this company for home brewing so the this kit is really helpful to us. Overall, I think this is a good value and solid choice for your home brewing needs.
