Ball peen hammer. It important that the hammer is well balanced and has nicely polished strike surfaces. This hammer is OK; NOT perfect, but will get the job done.

We use these in our weld shop, they are well made with a handle that will not break, you can not beat the value of these hammers.

Didn't know a hammer could be so well made. The grip is super positive and comfortable, and the finish on it is durable and not flashy. 5/5

I was using a buddies hammer. Victim in one hand and hammer in the other. I slid my hand down the hammer to strike and ended up with a bunch of fiberglass slivers in my hand from the splintered handle. Ouch. OUCH. I learned the hard way to inspect my own hammers. I used to be a mechanic for real. Now I just work on my own stuff. I own two sets of 5 hammers, one set wood one fiberglass, 8 through about 32 ounces. I've had them for over 20 years. They've persuaded a lot of cars and equipment. When I use a hammer on stuff, I lack the space and patience to "baby" the handles. The inspection results... 7 out of 10 hammers have chipped, gouged handles just below the heads. I like the feel of wood handled claw hammers, but switched to plasticish? handles after breaking my second wood hammer framing walls or nailing shingles. I have several plastic handled claw hammers that I bought cheap and really like. Claw handles don't get abused the same way. I like plastic but I know ball peens will get chewed up by my use. I think steel handled ball peens will be the answer. I bought the 16 oz to start with because I use it the most and my two 16 ouncers are in rough shape. This reel steel feels great. The grip is nice. The balance is good. It feels lighter but isn't, I think that's because the handle is steel (heavier?). Good balance. I was wondering about the shape of the head because it looks weird in pictures, but I laid it on my others and the head is identical as far as the round and flat ends compare. I also wondered about comments that it's short. It's 1/4 inch shorter than my wood 16 ouncer and 1/8 inch longer than my fiberglass. My 8 and 12 ouncers run shorter and my 24 and 32 ouncers are inch or two longer. I was going to take pictures but I'm lazy and not too tech savvy. You'll just have to take my word for it. I don't see many sizes on Amazon or a Mfg website. I'm going to put the Amazon sizes I find on my wish list. Maybe Santa will take the hint. If not, I'll eventually buy them myself. I am excited for my car to break down so I can use my new toy.
