In comparison to a Starrett thimble you will not mistake the budget spindle in feel or finish with the old school brand. That said, these will perform the fine adjustments for whatever your project entails. As an old guy the etched markings are faint in comparison so I will need good light to read. The ratchet feature is crude in feel (I never cared for them and prefer finger feel anyway) . One other issue, the face on one of the two simply wasn't ground completely clean. If you look at the end, that is not rust but is an unfinished end. Overall I would give them a typical budget OK like many import price point tools. Not heirloom quality but certainly worth using over a unmarked screw adjustment.
