This product performs exactly as described, but it is much harder to install than the description implies. I worked in the home-building trades for nearly thirty years. I had my own business for six years and I used a lot of remodeling products. This device serves a very important niche application, but the installation is a daunting challenge. Can lights were all the rage fifty years ago, and they are still useful in some application, but the bloom is off the rose, so-to-speak. Enter these conversion kits. The converter does exactly what it claims and that is what makes it such a good solution. The devil is, as they say, in the details. Luckily, having had my own business, I have all of the tools necessary to complete a professional installation, but it was a challenge.Pilot holes had to be drilled in the can so that the mounting screws included with the conversion kit could be attached. The only way to do that was using a right-angle drill (something most homeowners probably do not have). Once the pilot holes were made a stubby screwdriver was needed to attach the various pieces of the kit. Once completed the new surface mount light fixture was able to be flawlessly mounted.All-in-all this is a great solution to the problem of old, outdated can lights; the installation is just a lot harder than the marketing material indicates. If not for that I would have given it 5 stars.

We had an old, dated can light in our kitchen that absolutely crushed my soul every single day that I had to wash dishes under its depressing, recessed bulb. I watched an episode of “This Old House” and saw the professionals use this very product to convert a can light in a client’s kitchen on the program. I figured, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me!!I have to say that I’m not a professional in any way, but this converter was super easy to install, even for a novice home improvement gal. I watched a video (just YouTube this product and you’ll find oodles of helpful videos…including the “This Old House” episode I referenced above!!) and found the process to be seamless. This converter works great if your current can light has existing screw holes—you literally use the same 3 holes to affix the converter kit for stability. Don’t have this set up in your home (or you aren’t sure?)? No worries—a separate set of instructions will show you what to do.I replaced my sad can lighting with a gorgeous light fixture that weighed in at over seven pounds!! This converter is strong and stable, and I am confident that my new lighting isn’t going anywhere.I’m in love with this can converter kit, and I think you will be too!! Do not hesitate to walk confidently into your home improvement project with this handy gem.

The price tag is I guess fair. But to be honest I don't understand why it's so expensive. The product works great. It's been put together very thoughtfully to make your life easy. Here's the problem. If you have one of the round existing recessed boxes for lights, you're perfectly fine. But try doing this in a square box. It's almost impossible. The dimensions don't work even for a 6-in box and you can't reach one of the other ends. You have to jerry rig this which will make your light off center. I tried to reach out to the company if get to a solution but they were closed by the time I got there

So I was a little leery about using these to hang ceiling fans on 24”oc joists. It seems like a lot of weight for a can fixture. I emailed the manufacturer and they confirmed these would work. They actually work out great! Are they worth it? After cussing up a storm on the first one I would have said no way and to just use a retrofit brace! However, the second was a breeze. Despite the instructions, not all cans with three screws will work out using the existing holes. Mine were not equally spaced, by eye they were but definitely not when assembling the bracket. To make it easier on yourself use bit extensions or a long flex bit adapter, a magnetic bit and REAL tek screws (not the Phillips head self tapping screws included in the kit). I also found that trying to get the adapter with the mounting tabs, screws, wing nuts and large hands in the can to line up, mark and drill holes to be quite cumbersome. I found it much easier to install the first mounting tab on an existing screw location then loosely attach the plate, then loosely attach the remaining tabs. Then you can center everything and manipulate the bracket as it will not be square. If you’re using the flat trim I would also cut a couple inches off the stem and file the burr’s. Otherwise it will end up very deep in the can, and in my case hit the socket adapter. It takes a few stabs to get the plate screws at the right level, especially if there’s play in the can. Like I said, first one was a major pita, second a breeze. Beats having to break and cut the can and legs, hope there’s enough slack in the wiring, install a retrofit brace, and patch the ceiling or buy a oversized cover plate. I wish they were a little cheaper. The plain white version is reasonable. Another $20 to get a bronze colored trim piece seems excessive.
