How does a pellet grill work?

  • Pellets compressed from sawdust and wood shavings fill a hopper and are then fed into a burn pot using an electric auger system. The auger, which is basically a long screw, delivers pellets to the burn pot based on the speed dictated by the unit’s thermostat. As the burn pot ignites, the pellets burn. Heat then carries through the home via convection (air driven) means, thus allowing air flow and a blend of warm and cool air to maintain steady, even burn temperatures. A heat exchanger separates the smoke fumes from the warm air, thereby warming the room without smoking everyone out.
  • Pellet smokers work in much the same way, albeit with the heat exchanger removed so that the smoke produced by the burning wood pellets bathes your food in its goodness and helps render the barbecue product you’re after.

So far this has been the best thing I've bought for my Traeger! I took out my rusted pot and installed this one and I feel much better knowing that the bottom isn't going to fall out anytime soon! The installation process was pretty quick and painless, but I took a bit more time because I was also replacing my temperature probe. But now that all these parts are replaced and brand new, I hope to get a lot more years out of this thing!

I bought this to replace the rusted out burn pot on my Traeger Ironwood 650. It fit correctly but the pellets would not ignite. Through a lot of troubleshooting I figured out the vent holes are not the same as the Traeger factory part. There are less holes and in different positions. After installing the OEM factory part my grill fired right up like new.UPDATE:**This company did reach out to me to offer a replacement or refund**

I have installed the pot in an Ironwood 650, which is the first gen of the Ironwood. It is also identically with the Costco model Redland. The pot has about the same size as the old. It has only 7 air holes instead of the 9 of the original pot. Not sure that it makes a difference. I tested by heating the Traeger up to 500 degrees during freezing weather, and it worked. The igniter looked like the original one. The original was rusted into the old pot - and I could not remove it without destroying it.To remove the pot, you remove the four wing-nuts, lift up the pot, and then turn a little bit to the left, and pull it out with the left side higher, so to clear the igniter. You remove the four screws from the control panel. Behind the control panel, the wire to the igniter is zip-tied. You cut the zip-tie carefully, not to damage the wire. This allows you to pull the igniter far enough out to reach its connector. You install the igniter that comes with the put to protrude 1/4” and tighten the phillips screw. Connect the end connector into the cable that you have pulled out. Install the pot the same way you pulled it out in reverse. Put the wing nuts back. Now, on the control board, pull the igniter wire back, so that the connector pulls into the shaft under the auger away from the heat of the pot, and secure with a new zip-tie, just the way it was originally. Put the control board back, and you are done. It is 30 minutes worth of work.Watch out that there are different igniter rods for different models. Order the correct model - from the number one-star reviews to judge, people regularly order the wrong part.

My old pitboss pellet grill pot rotted out, they use cheap steel. I got the stainless steel pot to replace the old one. It was kind of a chore, you have to take the control box off the main grill body and getting the new pot into it is ki da hard you have to wiggle and turn it like a puzzle game to get it in. Then get wires all hooked back up it worked great. Started it up on smoke and then cranked it up to 300 degrees and it only took a few minutes to get there.

The ignitor was the fix for my misbehaving smoker, and the enameled burn pot is a beautiful thing.Unfortunately, the height of the opening for the auger tube is too low, so it will not mount flush to the surface of the auger box. All other dimensions seem to be correct, just the alignment of the tube is off by 1/8".I may consider creating a 1/8" thick plate to make it work in the future, but not an out-of-the-box replacement.

The Hot Rod igniter fit into the new pot perfectly and works great. The Enamel pot is built well but the flange/pipe that contains the Hot Rod is slightly bigger when it meets the pot and therefore can't get the 4 screw holes to align to the smoker - It does almost align and it does fit in place tightly without the screws so I am fine with it as it's a one-time fit.

I ordered the fire box and the igniter kit for my KCCombo platinum smoker. The fire box is a heavy gauge stainless steel welded fire box and is higher quality part then my original. My issue is with the igniter, this must draw more amps then my original igniter because it kept tripping my circuits, ( 2 different circuits), when the original never did. At 1st start up it heated up fast and seem like it was going to be good but after about 10 minutes would trip my circuit. I'm not sure if it is just defective or just has a higher amp draw after 10 minutes. I was refunded by Amazon and will be trying a different brand.

Direct replacement with easy install(10-15 min). The smoker fired right up!!for install of the hot rod , just hook new hot rod extension to the old and pull through to connect the new hot rod. I only used a Phillips screwdriver to remove the old rod/install the new one, and wire snips to cut the zip tie on the old harness. The fire pot provides good airflow and feels more durable than the original. Photo of the original included after 4.5 years of use. Highly recommend to keep your smoker in optimal working condition for an excellent price!
