This carbon water filter covers the carbon unit with a porous ceramic pre-filter, which is cleanable. The claim is that this extends the life of the carbon filter over those not pre-filtered. Time will tell whether the claim is true, but the concept seems viable. The product is modestly priced, and seems to do the job; I have cleaned a brown film off the ceramic filter after a few weeks of use. Lab testing would be welcomed to confirm the filtering effectiveness. Compatible with several water filter systems. Mine is a Berkey; installation was easy.

I have an aqua filter counter top water filter. Its like a berkie, put less expensive. My water provider claims its safe to drink, but we all have these systems to insure our drinking water is up to the proper quality. These filters are a necessary part of these systems.
