If you're going to enjoy Yerba Mate, this is one of the things you actually need. You can't just pour the leaves into a cup with hot water like regular tea. You need the special straw, and ideally you should be using the right cup. The traditional cups are made from hollowed out gourds, and some people say there's no difference when you drink out of a plastic cup, but I have to disagree. There's something that the hydrated inside of the gourd adds. Also, I have a friend in Argentina and I showed her mine when it arrived and she literally went and got hers to show me because it was exactly the same one. I figure if an Argentinian Yerba Mate promoter owns and uses the same one, it must be legit (she said it was). I also think this is one that Franco Colapinto uses in his Yerba Mate ministry on the F1 grid, and I'm half considering going and getting a Williams sticker for this thing now.

Out of the box, my first impression was that it's a uniquely beautiful cup that has a rich history and culture. It's a piece of gourd perfectly shaped by nature and expertly wrapped in leather by a meticulous craftsman. It would make for a great gift for sure.Upon closer look, I noticed the undesirable gaseous smell. I'm not very familiar with the leather tanning process, but this one doesn't smell at all like the pleasant new car leather smell. It's more akin to the smell of paint thinner/mineral spirit. Then I noticed the black smudges on my fingernails... I looked in the box and saw traces of black dye.I followed the steps I found online on how to cure your yerba mate cup before initial use – I washed it with hot water, filled it with yerba mate, let it sit overnight, lightly scraped the interior, rinsed then dried. Now here's where I failed and I hope you learn from my mistake... I know I was supposed to place the cup in a well-ventilated warm place and let it air dry overnight. I live in an apartment and the only space that fit that description was my balcony that faces north. Generally, I only get about an hour of direct early morning sun and my whole unit sits in the shade the rest of the day. The alternative would be to fan it until it's dry. Other people online advised using hair dryer or heat gun after using the cup. I thought all of that was unnecessary and ridiculous – I drink tea 2-3x a day at work and there's no way I'm doing that everyday and definitely not at work where I make my tea.So, the next day, I saw that the cup was still damp inside so I decided to let it sit out there a little longer. In the afternoon, it was still pretty wet. So I left it out again another night. The following morning, I checked on it and got really dismayed... Mold started growing inside the cup! The internet says that if this happens, you can just soak it in hot water again and try to scrape off all traces of mold the let it dry again...When I was convinced I've removed all the mold, I repeated the steps and let it air dry again overnight. The following day, there weren't just patches of mold... the whole inside of the gourd has turned into mold! At this point, I've accepted that I failed and it's best to just give up.I hate leaving this kind of review because I was rooting for it and wanted to share this idea/product with my tea-drinking friends and family. But unless you live in a properly ventilated place (bonus of you get enough sunlight) and/or certain you can and will put that much effort into this whole thing, it's best to stay away from it.

About 15 years ago, I began looking for a drink with a lot of caffeine. I remembered my father saying to me (he was a chemist) that “yerba mate” had more caffeine than coffee, or at least a different type of caffeine. So I went to my local Latin market and bought a 3lbs bag of mate and a box of mate tea bags. That began my long relationship with yerba mate. I learned that the caffeine in mate affected me differently than the caffeine in coffee. “Mateine” seemed to stay with me much longer than caffeine, and at a much more even level. I also felt a great deal of mental clarity. Because I’m a professional writer, both these enhancements were a great bonanza. What I like best about this “Mate” (the drink and the gourd are both called “mate”) is that it’s made from a genuine, organic “calabash,” the word for “gourd” in the Horn of South America. I’d previously only drunk mate from a ceramic “mate.” The other thing I love about this set is the “bombilla,” the straw. Most bombillas have little holes on the end that’s shaped like a little paddle. This straw has 4 super-fine slits on either side, on the end that goes in the mate. With slits instead of hole, you’re far less likely to suck up any twigs or powder that may be in your mate. I also really like the very rough-hewn leather that encases the gourd. It feels legit. There’s a whole ritual involved in both filling the mate with the leaves and twigs (you can buy mate “sin palo,” which means “without twigs,” which I’d recommend, except that then your mate drink will be much stronger, and by that I mean more caffeinated, and way more bitter —just saying), and in drinking mate. The preparer of the mate must drink first to make sure that the mate has been well prepared for his guests to drink. Once the preparer gives his okay, then the mate is passed around for others in the group to drink. Yes. You read that right. Everyone drinks from the same straw. You can take that as you will. Personally, I think it’s an incredibly astute way for the native peoples of the Horn of South America to attain community immunity, long before vaccinations were invented. But that’s my opinion, and neither here nor there. If you want a legit gourd from which to drink your yerba mate, at home or at work (where you might look hilariously pretentious unless you’re from Argentina), then look no further than this really great Chemate Mate and Bombilla.
