Griffin Wood Snare Drums

Productive Wood Drum Shell Manufacturing and Testing

All of our drum shells are manufactured from hand picked quality poplar wood panels. The wood mill cuts and delivers to our factory proper sizes for our shells by a computer-controlled saw. After the gluing, rolling, drying, and sanding process, the drum shells are checked for a level check, and measured for accuracy at a 15% sample rate. Next, the laminate wrap is applied, and holes are drilled into the shell for hardware, and sands down the edges of the shell for snare beds. Next, all hardware, drum heads, and snare wires are assembled to the drum shells. Finally, before packaging and shipping to our warehouse distribution location, our quality control technician visually inspects all the drums, and does a performance sound test with a 5% sample rate. Once the testing and inspections passes our standards, the finished production ships direct to our loading dock, where our sound technicians perform yet another & final sound test before we enter the inventory as ready to be fulfilled.

Seller is great. Arrived on time, well packaged. Drum came ready to go and with a drum key. Looks real nice too. I use it as a side snare for accents. Very effective.

I like the smaller size for the space and an alternate sound to my prized Ludwig keystone snare.

Its a fine drum, snares are kinda miniature, they sound okay but you might wish to replace. I'm a semi-pro so I may be more demanding than some. At least you will want to remove the top batter head to get inside with a small philips screwdriver and tighten everything up. A nice 10" Remo Ambassador batter head would also serve nicely. Overall I'm very pleased.

Upon receiving the drum and doing light tuning, you will not be super impressed unless you're a total beginner. The included heads are pretty awful (I still keep them in case of an emergency blow-out).I immediately knew they had to go, but seeing that the drum's PVC wrap was already peeling back at the edge, and the logo emblem wasn't even curved to the contour of the shell (it's double-sided taped on "flat" then screwed on), I decided to just go full-blown takedown, clean, lube, and reassemble.Obviously, for a snare at this price the hardware is not going to be perfectly setup and tight, and things are going to be sloppy. However, even with the included heads you'll notice this is a huge step up from the included Mendini or other kids' kit snares. With a little help, it'll become a regular addition to your normal setup or a lightweight travel kit. I've been playing for 25 years and I'm loving this little thing. For the average user, I recommend new heads, and while at it you should tighten all hardware screws inside, and clean and lube all the lugs before reinserting. Check the snares for sharp edges and file if needed. Lube the snare latch. For a professional makeover (just realize this will likely void your warranty if there is one):I glued and clamped the wrap's seam back together, and custom bent the logo to contour the drum after removing the double-sided tape. With a little mineral oil, the faux grain pops in the light and the little drum looks pretty professional!I also lightly linseed oiled the interior of the drum, but that is a personal preference for preserving my drum. I am not positive if it changed the tone or not. Some people also use Tung oil.All screw holes needed filing of loose debris, and I used blue Loctite on all affixed hardware. Some of the springs were cockeyed and I was able to reposition them straight and greased them with silicone. I tossed the almost worthless 1/4" ribbons on the snare and cut some fiber-infused fake leather to 5/8". I also had to file parts of the included snare because the wires are very sloppily soldered with sharp edges. The latch works MUCH better after properly cleaned then siliconed. After putting on a Remo coated powerstroke on top and an ambassador on the bottom, I am absolutely stunned. It's got great bite and even sounds nice on ghost notes. I'd swear this snare was worth triple what I paid or more. Considering I spent almost as much on heads as I did on the actual drum, it's a steal. It's just all around good for almost every genre I toss at it, from jazz to death metal.I keep the Griffin tuned 1/2 step between my 14" regular and 13" piccolo snare. So now I not only have a convenient micro drum for travel and tutoring, but I can keep it set up at my regular kit and have a second snare simultaneously. Yes, it has the volume to keep up. It cuts fine through my Zildjian A cymbals. Also note that lightweight 10" snare stands are only $30 on Amazon, double-braced and comes with a bonus stick bag. So my total investment came to a bit over $100 plus a little time. I'm very happy!

It's a cheap little snare. It's great for experimentation with sound. I took the beater head off, lined the sides with news papers, then significantly tightened the beater and snare heads. Now it sounds like a firecracker.
