I needed a heart rate monitor in order to provide heart rate data during mysessions on the Concept 2 indoor rower. As all this was completely new to meI spent quite a while trying to decide which Polar unit to choose.I decided upon Polar as they seemed both fairly cost effective, had a widerange of offerings for all budgets and later I discovered that the Concept 2rower is compatible with Polar devices which was lucky!I was going to select a more expensive Polar unit, but eventually decidedthat as I'm new to all this that spending extra money on additional featuresI will probably not use was not necessary. So, I opted for the base FT1offering.For those that are new to this and perhaps might benefit from a lay mansdescription of how this all works, then what you get is a chest belt heartrate transmitter and a wrist watch receiver. The chest belt transmits yourheart rate to the watch which displays it and provides various otheradditional functionality. The chest belt needs to be wetted on the part that is in contact with yourchest. This isto allow the electrical signals from your heart to be conducted through tothechest belt unit. Don't worry, you don't feel anything as the belt detectsthe signals passively and so no shocks or tingles are felt and once on itjust feels like a belt and nothing else.Be advised that for best results the chest belt unit should be worn justunder the breasts/pectorals, so you need to be comfortable with wearing itin this location. The belt unit is sealed and waterproof as is the wrist watch receiver, so can be worn in the shower or swimming pool, but youmust not press the watch's button when in water. Thewatch has just one button on the lower side of the watch face which controlsall the functions and as such is pretty simple. This is another reason whythe lower end Polar products are perfect for those like me who just want tosee their heart rate. There are other functions such as a one workout memorythat shows you the duration of your session, average heart rate and maximumheart rate. When you start your workout, simply press the button on thewatch once and press it again at the end of the workout. Pressing the buttontwice in quick succession will then show you the stats as mentioned abovefor that workout. So, it's pretty simple stuff which when you're like me andneeding just the essential information, it's just what you need. The wrist watch receiver also displays the time of day and so can be used asa regular watch should you desire. it's rugged enough and feels solid. Thestrap should fit any size from the smallest girl to the largest man as thestrap doesn't use the standard hole arrangement found on wrist watch straps.Instead it cleverly uses the close-cut ridged inner surface of the strap toallow infinite and fine grain fitting adjustment to be made. The wrist watch receiver unit - or heart rate computer as it's sometimescalled has a nice big display for the heart rate and can even be setup sothat the watch beeps your rate audibly. You can also set a lower and upperheart rate that once you go out of bounds of an audible alarm sounds.Although the volume of these audible indicators isn't particularly loud, Ifound that on a recent session on the rowing machine that I could hear thewatch beeping to tell me I had exceeded my upper heart rate zone I'd definedwithout any difficulty over the considerable noise of the rowing machine. If you're interested in calories or fat burned stats then you'll need tospend more and go for one of the more sophisticated Polar units like theFT4. Note, some gym equipment offer calorie/fat burning data as well aspicking up your heart rate from a Polar unit, so you may not even need amore expensive unit like the FT4. However, one useful feature of the FT4 ismultiple workout stats memory. In other words, the FT1 can only store yourlast workout stats and you lose them when you next do a workout. The FT4stores several, so you can keep track of your progress more easily if thisis important to you and your gym equipment doesn't have such on-boardfeatures.A quick note to those wanting gym equipment to show heart rate. If you're agym user and simply want to have the equipment you use show the heart rateand nothing else and don't want to wrist watch receiver then you can savemoney and purchase the chest belt alone from Polar. It's useful to knowthat the chest belt provided in the FT1 package (the T31) is also soldseparately in both coded and uncoded versions. The uncoded version isslightly cheaper, but being an uncoded signal may mean that other people'sheart rate signals from their Polar units may interfere with yours if inclose proximity. The coded T31 chest belt is only marginally more expensiveand therefore worth the money. The coded T31 was included in my FT1package - but check to ensure this is so if purchasing yours.Polar offer the T31 and the H1 chest belts. The key difference as far as Iknow is that the more expensive H1 has a user replaceable battery and theT31 is a sealed unit. The T31 has a battery life of approximately 2500 hoursand when the battery dies you can actually send it off to a Polar servicecentre (In Warwick for UK users I believe) and for less than half the priceof a replacement T31 so I understand, they'll replace the battery and sendthe unit back to you, so no need to throw away and buy again new unlike whatanother reviewer stated.Either the T31 or H1 chest belt transmitters will work for gym equipmentdesigned to be compatible with Polar heart rate products - so check yourgym's equipment first.I hadn't realized this before purchasing my FT1 and strictly speaking Idon't really need the watch. The Concept 2 indoor rower I use requires atransmitter cable that they provide at a charge that you plug one end intothe rowers monitor and the other end beneath your seat. This allows yourheart rate to be shown on the rowers monitor and actually stored as part ofyour workout data if you have the appropriate accessory memory card for themachine.Transmitter range is probably less than 6 feet, but this is fine because thewrist watch receiver isn't going to be farther away than that (unless youhave VERY long arms!).Take care to carefully dry the chest belt after use so that the unit doesn'tremain active and try looking to pick up heart rate signals. Leaving theunit damp or wet after use will only reduce battery life. The chest belt comes in two pieces. The main T31 transmitter unit that fitsacross the front of your chest and a stretchy adjustable band that youattach to the transmitter that goes around your back.As far as performance goes, well, I've had no reliability issues and allseems to work fine.I hope this review has covered all the key things you might need to know.

I have used this monitor everyday for the last 30 days with great results. I also purchased "Spectra 360 Electrode Gel Parker Labs, Each 250GM Tube" after reading positive reviews. I apply a small amount of the gel everyday before my ride. The tube is huge, it will last over a year, with as much as I apply. I have never had any problems with erratic readings as some have suggested. I generally ride about 45 minutes a day with varying intensities, and the monitor always seems spot on from start to finish. The monitor syncs quickly with the transmitter, usually within 10 seconds, and i have had no issues with it ever losing the connection between the two. This monitor doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but it does exactly what I wanted it to do, displays my heart rate in Big easy to read numbers without a lot of clutter all over the screen that other monitors have. This is important to me as when i ride, i just want to take a quick glance and get my info. It does include a stopwatch and it will display your avg and max heart rate for your last session. Some other more expensive meters do more, or record more sessions than just your last one, but this was unnecessary to me, you have to decide whats more important to you.5'10" 150lbs, I have a 35" inch chest, measured right below your actual chest, where the monitor sits. I ordered the "one" size and it came with a medium strap. The strap is very comfortable for me, and I have never had any issues. I do have the adjustment almost maxed all the way out, maybe only an inch left. The strap itself is elastic and I can stretch it quite a bit, so I'm sure it would fit larger chests, but it would be stretched then and maybe not as comfortable. people with larger chests might want to look into getting the large strap.Mounted this onto my bike handlebars using "Timex Watch Bike Mount" also purchased here on amazon. The strap on the watch does seem a little cheap, but what do you expect from Polar's cheapest product. This doesn't concern me too much since i leave it on my handlebars all the time, but it could be a problem for someone taking it on,off every day.

I have brief cardiac arrhythmia episodes once or twice every three months but can't feel it when my heart rate speeds up to 200 beats per minute, or higher, without some type of heart rate measurement device. By wearing my Polar FT1 while I'm awake, even though I might not know it when my heart rate sky-rockets, my Polar FT1 catches it and keeps track of it. It keeps a record of my average heart rate and maximum heart rate each day and allows me to enter that data into a file on my laptop computer which shows both the numerical data and a 2-D bar graph of that data to show my cardiologist at my check-ups. The Polar FT1's data matches the same data gathered by the EKG machine in my doctor's office and in my hospital's fitness center, where I work out, so its accuracy is exceptional. The Polar FT1 is easy to put on each day, easy to operate (I just put it on when I'm dressing, turn it on when I'm dressed, turn it off and take it off when I get ready for bed, gather that day's average heart rate and maximum heart rate, and key it into my laptop computer's file for that date), and it is comfortable to wear all day. With Amazon.com's great price, which is lower than Polar's price or the prices offered by some of the other on-line retailers who sell these great devices, I can afford to gather this much needed data economically, The built-in batteries in the Polar FT1's transmitter unit and the wristwatch-like receiver/recording unit last for approximately one year of waking-hours-use the way I use them. The wristwatch functions of the receiver/recording unit are helpful and easy to use. Most people assume it is just my digital wristwatch and never know it is performing a very helpful and necessary function for me and my cardiac health. The Polar FT1 also performs exceptionally well with my cardiac fitness program by allowing me to constantly monitor my heart rate while I'm exercising and warning me if my heart rate gets too high while I'm exercising (or if it gets too low while I'm resting or relaxing). It does a lot for me and my cardiac health for not a lot of money. Thanks Polar and Amazon.com!!

I wanted a heart monitor because I have exercise induced tachycardia and wanted to keep my pulse below a certain limit during biking and walking sessions. When I first put the device on, in my home, it appeared to function properly for several hrs. , its number agreeing with the pulse I measured in the traditional way. After about a half hr. biking, the display stopped flashing, and a number nowhere near my pulse was steadily displayed. Resetting back to EXE produced about the same results. A number, non blinking, would appear on the screen, and would not be anywhere near my pulse. This number would occasionally change, sometimes to one fairly close to my pulse, but most of the time, it was way off. I tried several sessions and got pretty much the same results. Returning the monitor was easily done, but I was surprised the item was listed as used in the return info. I thought I had ordered a new one.I purchased the exact same model from another company but through Amazon, and made sure it was described as "new". I didn't get a different model because all I want the device to do is to tell me my heart rate and do not need any other functions. The second polar FT1 did just about the same thing as the first, except it was easier to reset in the EXE mode. It also would stop flashing, and display a number that was not my heart rate. I sent it back (again easily done) and am still looking for a heart monitor. I have a fairly irregular heart beat, perhaps is me.
