I have a mini computer running plex (media server) and Pihole (DNS and DHCP services). That mini has a 1G ethernet port. When I upgraded my network to 2.5Gig, that port was the long pole in the tent that was slowing me down. When I dropped this thing in the mini, windows 11 immediately picked it up and now I have a system that keeps up! No special drivers, just drop it in and BOOM. Good deal for the price. Comes with two form factors of USB connections. Have tried both. Works great.

I previously purchased Plugable's USB 3 hub, that works great with my Synology DS920+ NAS. When I decided to lock down the built in LAN ports for many geo-locations including parts of the US, I need a way back in, in case I locked myself out. This together with the Realtek driver from bb-qq was the answer. Has speed equal to built-in ports (I have a 1 Gigabit filer connection), and I left it connected and in use for several days instead of using the built in ports, no issues. Now it is disconnected except when needed for emergency access. If you have a faster internet connection that can take advantage of this adapter, this could be an inexpensive upgrade to your NAS. Remember to check the Realtek driver from bb-qq on GitHub to be sure your NAS is supported and install that driver first.

I plugged this into my HP Elitebook 850 G8 running Win11 Pro and it was connected automatically and connected right away. I'm getting peak speeds of 2.0Gbps file transfers of a 2.9GB test file with sustained speeds of 1.88Gbps between the PC and a NAS capable of saturating a 10Gb line through my QNAP QSW-2104-25-A switch. Enabling jumbo frames with a 9k MTU bumped those numbers up 10%. I'll probably never do iPerf testing but I went from 6.3 to 9.0Gbps with the same laptop and a 10Gbit thunderbolt adapter when enabling jumbo frames (a 40% increase) so this product might be bottle-necked a little shy of 2.5Gbps (or the laptop has a USB3.0 bottleneck not on Thunderbolt). Either way 2.2Gbps for $29 is a screaming deal--I immediately bought another for the family PC to shorten the nightly backups to the NAS.The unit also runs pretty cool. The only real fault is an annoyingly bright cold white activity light.

I upgraded to 1.2 Gig down and 35 Meg up from Comcast/Xfinity. I then bought an Arris S33 modem. (Note, never plug anything into the second Ethernet port on the S33 if you are a residential customer. When the modem reboots the one IP address Comcast will give you may not be given to the 2.5 Gig port.) I then realized that I had nothing in the house that could do faster than 1 Gig Ethernet. (My WiFi is eero 6+, which only can do 1 Gig, and the Windows laptops we have only have a 1 Gig Ethernet ports, and the Chromebook has no Ethernet port.)I have an Acer Chromebook 317 with a Pentium Silver N6000 @ 1.10 GHz with 8 GB of memory. I've wanted an Ethernet adapter for it before, but always worked around the problem by borrowing another laptop. I plugged in the USB-E2500 and saw a message I've never seen before "Update firmware on Unifying Receiver". I clicked OK and saw a message that the update failed, but asking if I wanted to try again. I went to try again and found that my mouse didn't work. But my trackpad (which I have off when Chrome OS is running) was working. Apparently I was running at a lower more basic level of the laptop. Using the trackpad I ran the update again, and this time it said the update worked! So I took the laptop to the S33, unplugged my eero and plugged in the USBC-E2500. Two minutes later it was still "connecting" when I viewed Ethernet in my Chrome OS settings. I cycled power on the S33 and when its light went blue the Chromebook was connected. I then tested the speed. On speedtest.net I got 1269.28 down and 41.67 up.On xfinity.speedtest.com I got 1367.5 down and 39.5 up.Comcast /Xfinity sold the service as 1200 down and 35 up.Life is good!

Using the 2.5 Gbe adapter between my Lenovo Yogo C930 laptop and my QNAP NAS.Immediately after installation I was getting near 2.5G read speeds from the NAS and only 1G write speeds to the NAS. Went into the adapter's driver Advanced settings to make sure Jumbo Frames were on at 9K setting, but that was not available. My next troubleshooting steps were to check my hardware connections (wiring between router, switches, and NAS). Made a few changes and both R/W speeds drop to 1G. After that I went back to my original hardware setup, but R/W speeds were stuck at 1G.So I decided to update the 2016 driver that was pre-installed on the 2.5 Gbe adapter, but Windows stated the "Best driver was installed". So I went to the Pluggable's website and found the recommended 2021 driver. Downloaded that driver which allowed me access to change the Jumbo Frames setting from "Disabled" to "9014 Bytes" and that worked.I now get 2.3G write speeds and 2.5G read speeds between my Yoga C930 laptop and my NAS!I would have scored this a 5 star rating, but it was not plug and play. Users that are not a little tech savvy could have issues out of the box and just return the adapter. My setup is as follows:- QNAP TS-253 NAS which has (2) 2.5Gbe ports- QNAP QM2-2P10G1TA PCIe Expansion Card with 2 x PCIe 2280 M.2 SSD Slots- (2) Samsung 870 EVO 500 GB NVME SSD drives installed in the QM2 Expansion card (RAID 1, Used for caching)- (1) QNAP 6-Port 10GbE & 2.5GbE (QSW-2104-2S-US) Unmanaged Network Switch- Asus AX89X Router with (1) SFP+ 10G port, (1) 10G Ethernet portPlease note my setup if for future expansion to 10G networking, but for now I'm only looking for use the 2.5G performance.

EDIT: I previously rated 1 star because of bad tests on my part. My switch linked to 1g instead of 2.5g and I didn't notice it at first, so I thought the adapter was to blame but it wasn't it's fault it was my switch and a bad cable. I tested again and I'm now revising my rating to 5 stars now that I was able to properly test 2500Base-T on Big Sur.. Here's my updated review...You will see a link at 1000Base-T on MacOS Big Sur on a MacBook 2019 but it really links at 2500Base-T on the adapter to your switch or server that supports 2500Base-T. You don't need to install any additional drivers for Big Sur.See the photo of the iperf3 test I did from my Mac to a FreeNAS server. Even though Big Sur shows it linked at 1g, it worked at 2.5g with a very good throughput of about 2.35Gbits/sec, very stable and no errors. I used Jumbo Frames to make sure I could max it out. It may not be necessary but it usually helps a bit at those speed.I tested the adapter using his USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter through my USB-C HUB that is connected to my Macbook USB-C port connector and I also tested using the adapter USB-C connector directly connected to the Macbook USB-C port (without the USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter that comes with it, great idea btw Plugable to have this included in the package!) and the performances where exactly the same. So whatever you decide to use, it will work well.I also tested this adapter with 1000Base-T servers and switches and it also works very well (See another iperf3 test I did in the photos), maxing out the 1g link easily.A very good adapter, works perfectly with Big Sur at 2500Base-T even though it only shows 1000Base-T in the UI, I suppose they'll update the real speed eventually but it doesn't matter for the performance.I highly recommend it.

Update October 2022So I recently purchased a QNAP TS-233 ARM based NAS, which is rather good for QMagie photo ID and management because it has a Neural Processing Unit, a fairly decent amount of RAM, 2x 3.5 Drive bays etc.The only downside is the single 1Gb Ethernet port. I tried the Plugable 2.5Gbe adapter in the front facing USB 3.0 port (The rear 2 ports are USB 2) and guess what it worked, it was recognised and shows as a 2.5Gbe adapter, no drivers were required, literally plug & play.So if you have a QNAP NAS drive, which feels handicapped by its 1Gb connection but has USB 3.0 ports, try one of these, you may get a cheap, rather nice speed upgrade. (Obviously your PC/Mac, switch etc also need to be 2.5Gbe to get the increase) or if you need Link aggregation or a 2nd interface, this is a cheap as chips upgradeUpdate Feb 2022.I discovered that on my 2021 M1 iPad Pro, connected via a TB3 dock (with built in 1Gb Ethernet, which for some reason only gives 40MB/s ) that plugging this into the Docks TB3/USB C pass through, gives a 238 MB/s read/write speed. I had been using a Caldigit 10Gbe adapter but due to the weird things apple have done with TB3 on the M1, it only ever hit 500MB/S. Tests were done on 15.4beta4.One of the good things with 2.5Gbe is no need to retire, your Cat5e will work at 2.5Gbe. (Cat 5e will even work for very short runs at 10Gbe, say 10 feet or less, I’ve tested this.Anyway, still going strong and a cheap and worthwhile purchase :)Update September 2021I have now got the iPad Pro 2021 (M1, 12.9") and have this connected to a Caldigit USB C/TB3 Pro Dock. via the Docks 10Gb USB C port. Its recognised by my iPad as a 100/1000/2500 adapter and I tested it against the Docks built in 1Gb ethernet port.I discovered that the Plugable works connected to my 10Gbe/5Gbe/2.5Gbe Netgear switch and shows on the switch as a 2.5Gbe connection. Testing transfer speeds I am getting the followingMaximum 183 Megabytes per secondAverage 127 MB per second. So it seems to be working very well and is around 40% faster than the Caldigit Docks adapter. Connecting an OWC 10Gbe Thunderbolt adapter gives speeds of around 600Megabytes per second (connected directly to iPad)My MacBook 16" has 10Gbe (OWC adapter), I have a 10GBE network via Unifi and Netgear switches and Cat8 cabling, Having invested in my network and NAS drives, my Surface Pro 7 felt a little left out, I had ordered the Qnap 5Gbe adapter and decided to try one of these so it could join in the fun.I didn't expect much but, wow, it's a bargain, it works well, (Tip Windows will update the driver, but there's a much newer one available which lets you select Jumbo frames and seems faster Look for Realtek RTL8156 drivers). For the price I am getting around 220-300 Megabytes per second transferring from my two NAS drives, its fast, stable and cheap and for the price is an incredible bargain.I also bought the QNAP device (5Gbe USB adapter) and its around 50-80MBps faster, but over 3 times the price, so you pays your money and you take your choice, both are very good devices though.I also tested this with my iPad Pro (2018), it works, (see pictures) but only at 1Gbe not 2.5Gbe. But if you need an ethernet adapted for your iPad that might be supported one day, look no further.
