When you buy a new home, finding the plumbing lines is 1/2 the battle, it seems.We've had a kitchen sink that will clog every 4-6 months. Not knowing where the clean-out was we'd clear it with a balloon-attachment for our house shoved in to the line from the clean out under the sink. It worked reasonably well, but is a mess and risky that you'll eventually bust an underground line.In fact, we even had a plumber come out to assist us in locating the clogged pipe, and while he did get us in the general location he wasn't able to locate it either.With this tool, I had the clean out located within 3 minutes!As others have mentioned, this is not a quality tool meant to pass down to your children. The signal strength is fairly weak but was able to get a weak signal though my concrete slab, and about 10-12 inches of soil.It is helpful to have a 2nd person to gradually advance the snake in to the pipe, locate it, and have them slowly advance the snake as you're locating & marking the ground as you go.This was well worth the money and did a wonderful job for me.

This is one of the 3 product of this kind I bought and tested trying to find a decent model that actually works and it's worth its praised specifications on the product page, and it was the most disappointing out of the 3, in spite that I liked it the most in terms being the prettiest looking and having the longest emitter line, although at almost double the price for 25% more length.The worst part was the emitter line being too thin and flexible at the same time and not being capable to be pushed inside a 4 inch smooth and straight underground rain drain pipe no matter how much I tried to push it back and forth and wiggled it to get in past 15-20 ft. It coiled inside the pipe and refused to go any further, so the picture showing the sensor line turning 90° twice in a pipe is a joke. It may happen if that is within the 2-4 ft from the point of entry, or perhaps it may work better in thinner than 4" pipes, but as I tested, it jams under its own weight and friction and it coils inside the larger pipes within 6 meters.The second problem was its imprecise detection of the sensor position inside the rain drain pipe buried less than 1.5 ft underground. This detector was the weakest out of the 3 I have tested and also the most inaccurate.The only reason I'm leaving 2 stars here is that it may work better with narrower pipes at less depth or inside walls, which I haven't tested, otherwise I'd give it a 0 for my application performance.Terribly expensive for a waste of time!

I ran this about 9 inches under a concrete slab in my basement. My goal was to tie into a drain pipe for a bathroom sink and I needed to know where the pipe was at under my concrete slab.I used it right out of the box. It came charged.It was easy enough to use. I turned it on and ran the tape down the pipe. Immediately, I noticed, if I was next to the spool, the wand was triggered, so I had to move the spool away from the wand. About 4 feet seemed to do the trick.I inched the tape into the pipe, detected the signal and chalked the floor. The signal became very weak after pushing the tape into the pipe about 6 feet. Fortunately, for me, that was enough.I'm not convinced this is a good enough tool for serious users. It worked fine for me, but a stronger signal would be better for anyone using this day in and day out.

ordered to try and locate under ground pipes near my fence, but could not even locate my gutter drain pipes. was a little to flexable by itself to be able to turn it so the head pointed up so i could pick the signal up and didnt have fiber glass push rod to help push it into the pipe. found just digging worked the best to find the location to of the pipe.

Works well for up to 20 inches deep. Had trouble feeding through a pipe with elbows so i fed a plumbing snake through and taped the end of the transmitter to the snake to feed it to into the pipe. Overall it worked for what i needed it for.

It worked great for locating a 2" cast iron pipe, located below a 3.5" concrete slab and another ~4 inches of gravel and clay. Photo shows cut-out was within an inch of perfect, as guided by this tool. The signal was getting a bit marginal (weaker signal) further along the line which was both deeper under slab and within larger/thicker 4" cast iron pipe.I did combine it with a fiberglass pushrod and duct taped the two together, to help get to feed (push forward) inside my pipe past elbows and the friction of old cast iron pipe. Might not need the additional stiffness support, in a smoother pipe or fewer bends.But this tool was better than my other options to rent a tool, because it could insert into a narrower pipe than other tools I could rent.One potential operator error to be aware of, that might explain some other reviewer's frustration and which the instructions don't clarify well. (Same problem exists with more expensive locators)... The rotated orientation of the receiver wand is critical to receiving the signal. The wide end of the wand has be aligned along the axis of the pipe (and transmitter head inside the pipe). The signal will drop from max all the way to to zero, if you rotate the wand 90 degrees, even while still pointing straight down and located perfectly on top of the transmitter. (So you would much weaker signal if not rotated along axis or pipe.)

Item is cheap, I had to replace probe right out of the box. It did not work as advertised. I tried to push it down the sewer pipe from the roof and it kept binding then would not pick up signal. Go ahead and spend an extra 300.00 and buy a sewer snake with the camera and heavy duty locator.
