This is my first time trying a watercolor notebook. The paper is very absorbent, and it holds a lot of water.Be sure to use painters tape on your border so it doesn't drip onto the other pages though, you'll ruin the edges of all your paintings. That will also prevent warping, if you tape your page down and leave it taped until the paint is completely dry. Color shines through nicely.

This little watercolor book is perfect. The pages are nice portable size. They are thick and cold-pressed; they have a nice tooth to them. They hold watery colors well without buckling. This is the perfect journal like size for daily artistic journal. The paper suits mixed media as well. I love this.

This is good watercolor paper for playing around with. While it's not premium, it's still a good quality, especially for things like color studies and outdoor sketching. It's thick and sturdy and can take some reworking on the surface. I like to draw and paint when I'm on vacation, so I cut these sheets into postcard sizes and took them along to record my travels. The paper stands up well even through the postal system (though if you do something similar, I recommend coating the postcards in a thin layer of soft wax, as the watercolor paper surface tends to pick up dirt and smudges in the mail)

All right so I am pretty happy to find an alternative paper. Particularly since Phinus brand is exactly behaving like a high quality Strathmore. The first picture side by side you can just about see the textures. The Strathmore texture is a smidgen elongated where the Phinus texture is a little bit more circular but then when you paint on it you really can't tell.I did an exceptionally quick side-by-side painting using Windsor and Newton tray watercolors. In between some layers I blew dry.I first did wet on wet and then I started doing a few washes and then eventually I worked with a credit card to scratch across the surface and then I also worked to do some Boca effect removing color. The bottom line is the Phinus behaved exactly as the Strathmore traditionally has. Not only that, but it seems the Phinus may take the volume of initial water better... The page isn't as bowed-up in the finished product. Now that may not be purely scientific because I could have accidentally added more water to the Strathmore page. And I did actually add more color. Regardless, it's not really an issue.Anyway, again, for the price it's an excellent alternative to convert to if you want to protect your creative budget!

I really like this sketchbook! It takes watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paint well. It works with markers too, but since watercolor paper is made to be more absorbent, you'll run through marker ink too fast with paper like this. If you're looking for a sketchbook just for marker usage, I'd recommend you keep looking, but this one is great for the paints I mentioned. The paper isn't 100% cotton, but most sketchbooks in this price range aren't 100% cotton. That's totally fine by me if it makes it more affordable. The front side of the page is true cold press, but the back side is more smooth. It isn't quite the texture of a hot press paper, but it is noticeably smoother. I like this because it gives me two different experiences per sheet of paper. The last pic I uploaded is an example of the back page.I did a touch test of all my different sketchbooks (and I've tried all the major ones), and the closest match for paper texture and paper performance is Canson's Montval series watercolor sketchbook, although I'd say this Phinus brand paper is more bumpy/textured.This is 300gsm paper, and behaves as expected. It had ever so slight buckling when I used a lot of wet-on-wet painting. This is to be expected, and most of the time I paint wet-on-dry in sketchbooks anyway.Totally recommend this if you're looking for a sketchbook whether you're a beginner, hobbist, or a professional looking for a sketchbook to play around in. This is meant to be a playground, not paper that will be used on a piece you're planning to professionally sell.OH! Heads up, the paper is perforated. That might be a no-go for some folks.

Wow…. I was VERY pleasantly surprised by this watercolor paper. This is a bright white pad of watercolor paper with a nice tooth on one side and pretty smooth on the other side making it perfect for watercolors or stamping and then using your paints.I tried a bunch of things with my little painting …. Some wet on wet and wet on dry painting, scrubbing, layering several colors, etc. It performed well with everything. My paint dried pretty quickly, and I was able to come back the next day to soften colors and smooth out hard edges. The paper is attached to the pad just at the top. I did not tape this to a hard board and it did warp some, as expected. It handled a LOT of paint and water. Many beginner painters start with inferior quality paint and paper, and I did too. But then you have to kind of learn all over again when you move to better quality supplies. This paper pad would be great for not only beginners but also experienced painters. It is truly great quality, especially for the price.I am a card maker and usually cut down my paper to 5 1/2 by 4 1/4 inches to put it on an A2 card front. Using my paper trimmer this cut like a dream. It is also perfect for cutting out die cuts that I want to watercolor or ink blend on.I really, really enjoyed using this paper pad and highly recommend it.
