Palmer Hughes is the standard accordion book series to learn accordion! It’s simple, easy to read with pictures. A fun way to learn for children and adults. It comes in a series of advancing books. Reasonably priced. It makes practicing fun to learn.

I am a beginner and am nearly to the end of this book now. I am delighted by the well structured and enjoyable lessons in the book. I find the music fulfilling and satisfying to play, even though it is still at a fairly elementary level, and I am looking forward to continuing the course as I move onto book three.

Il libro è arrivato con dieci giorni d’anticipo rispetto al previsto, una gradita sorpresa! Il metodo è molto amichevole, credo che, progredendo, continuerò ad acquistare i prossimi volumi della serie.

For background, I'm new to the accordion but have background in piano. I started with book 1 of the series. This book slowly ramps up the difficulty and is good about introducing a new topic, then providing you a song to practice that new topic. Then later on, those topics are combined in the same song. It's really well thought out, even if some of the songs in particular are old-fashioned. I'll be continuing the series with book 3!In particular, this book goes over alternating bass, minor chords, and seventh chords. Songs are in the keys of C, F, and G. It has some more basic lessons on musical notation and rhythm as well for people new to reading music.I bought this for Kindle but wish I bought the paper book instead to make writing notes in it easier.

These books are fantastic! I got an accordion for Christmas, and have had 2 lessons with a great teacher. He recommended this series. It's the same one he used to learn 30 years ago, and he's an incredible player. I have background in piano, but these are perfect for someone with absolutely no experience. I went through book one in a couple of weeks, and book 2 has been very fun, but also very challenging. The third song introduces the player to alternating bass which was maddening for three or four days, until I got the hang of it.Just get these books and practice, and you will become an accordionist. Highly reccommend!

The Palmer-Hughes Accordion course is an excellent tool for teaching yourself accordion. I completed the first book and am about half-way through the this book. The songs become increasingly complex as you move through the book; however, the manner in which the difficulty increases is done in way so it is appropriately challenging and not frustrating. In addition to teaching you the different notes, it also incorporates basic music theory.

This series of books teaches you pretty much one fundamental at a time, then adds them together -- but not too quickly. I'm an adult learner and already play piano & violin pretty well, but appreciate the thoughtful way of introducing a skill, getting practice, then combining it with another recently learned skill. A good building block approach. Personally I find some of the titles amusing "Vegetables on Parade" for example -- but they are often drawn from polkas or folk songs so have musical merit (although you will likely play more complicated versions later). It helps that I have a great teacher with a sense of humor too. I know some adult learners who resist the idea of polka as a genre but these books don't dwell on the form, but use it when needed to introduce alternating bass lines etc. I'm having a lot of fun with the series.

はじめ英語なので、大丈夫かなと思いましたが、とてもわかりやすい図と漫画で中身もとても有益です。はじめての子供でも、大人でも続けて練習する秘訣をよく学べます。book1番を買ってよかったので、このbook2番も買いました。

I have been using the Palmer-Hughes course since February 2009 to teach myself the piano accordion and am nearly finished with Book 2. Although my progress may not be as steady as someone taking lessons, since my practice schedule depends on demands in my life, these books have kept me motivated and I continue to improve steadily. The songs are arranged in order of increasing complexity, and periodically introduce new skills and concepts. The introduction of these skills seems well timed to me, and as a result I have gone from someone with little formal musical knowledge to being able to read music at a basic level, including songs in different keys and time signatures, and also have an understanding of basic music theory concepts, such as how a major scale is constructed. The emphasis on sight reading also has made it so that navigating both the piano and bass sides of the accordion without looking is fairly natural, even as songs require more moving up and down the keyboard and playing sharps and flats. In short, whether you are teaching yourself to play, as I am, or whether you are taking lessons, these books will prove to be a valuable resource.
